@Whoopsiesman mozart and beethoven were rebels in there own right, remember they were around a hole couple o' hundred years earlier. if you think about the new style's of rock from the 60's and the alternative rock from the 80's and 90's, both of them were rebels, but the difference in craziness is phenomenal
Among all modern composers, Cowell holds a special place in my heart, because he understood and valued the beauty of both atonal and tonal music, whereas nearly all other composers have fallen on some side of an imaginary line of conflict between the two. Only someone with such a mindset could merge the two like this, a rich melody and a menacing undertone.
Can you email me the sheet music? Don't worry about copyright, this was published before 1912 which means copyright is void so you could send me the music.
How are the bass clusters played so that the black key B-flat sounds without the white key B-natural when, I assume, those chords are played with the forearm?
It's like giant deep GONGS in the bass while he brings out a celtic like melody in the top to give it a very exotic feel to it. A very futuristic tune way ahead of our times, especially how the left hand is forced to stretch for those giant 15ths. It's a pinnacle that not only demands a good ear to balance both but to have the melody emphasized without getting drenched by the bassi.
I too love this composition; however, I recommend Sorrel Hays' version over this ultra-slow one by Schleiermacher. If Manaunaun was the god of Motion, then let the song move accordingly! Nonetheless, well-picked gem, Hex.
I like this piece at this tempo, but the pianist doesn't really propel the music forward. I agree, it sounds static in this performance, but there IS a way to pace this piece with such a slow pulse! The problem is with a faster tempo, you risk choking the resonance of those clusters. Then again, I haven't heard the Sorrel Hays version...
Mozart/Beethoven would have been fuming. Cowell does not give two shits.

Fantastic upload, as usual.

@akamarutv, search "Cowell Irish Legends" on Petrucci Music Library, there's a free score of this there.

Such a fantastic piece nonetheless.

@BoomerRaid It's not the left hand, but the entire forearm that is asked to roll the fifteenths.

The whole piece is great, but the last four bars are unbelievable! Truly ingenious.

Haha. And you have the right to hate it. It took me quite a while to warm up to tone clusters, myself, and I still don't like semitones very much.

You get hit by a wall of sound and wonderfully drawn out modes. But it isn't oppressing, rather it's expressive.

@VIDE0DR0ME The tempo is marked Largo, "very slow in tempo and broad in manner".

I love the lilting Irish melody that floats over the tone clusters, which seem to just roll like waves. Awesome.
