Bill Carrothers just headlined at the Village Vanguard and he and his trio (Dre Pallemaerts and Nic Thys) sounded great! I discovered his website is pretty cool just type in Bill Carrothers and you'll find it. He got rave reviews in the NY Times, Time Out, etc. He should be better known!
bill carrothers is a genius! too bad kenny horst always gets in the way when he plays with guys. if he didn't own this club, he wouldn't have anyone to play with b/c he always appoints himself to play drums... kind of pathetic.
You're wrong about Kenny. 1st, many other drummers play the AQ regularly - local drummers Phil Hey, J Epstien, D Stanoch, G Avaloz, Eric Kamau Gravatt and others plus touring drummers like Roy Haynes, Ari Hoenig. 2nd, Kenny is a swinging drummer - why would genius Carrothers take the gig if he thought Kenny was always getting in the way? Carrothers has played with Kenny many times before and even recorded an album with him. Maybe Kenny's playing doesn't suit your taste, but many disagree.
