The Sens GM stated he gave up the pick because he was seeking a forward they thought they had a chance to draft. At picks 10-15 only 1 forward was drafted. This must mean the Sens were looking to draft Jaden Schwartz, who was taken by none other than the Blues. If the Sens wanted one of the forwards taken in the top 10 the trade would've been announced prior to pick 14. The Blues worked some magic and took what the Sens wanted, but both sides got tremendous talents in Runblad and Tarasenko!
Uhhh where'd all the Tarasenko vs. Rundblad talk come from? Both teams got what they wanted: Blues got the offensive winger they needed, Sens got the defenseman they wanted. At the time, Blues had Petro and EJ, now they have Petro and Shatty -- no room for Rundblad then, no room now. Unless Sens fans don't want Rundblad, I don't see any reason for both sides to not be happy about this move.
welcome to ottawa rundblad. "Magic number 7" Salming Trophy winner (Swedeish league top defenceman award. but i would love to have tarasenko since sens have no forward prospects. we will know who won this trade in a few years
@bfm987 I think it will be nuetral. No one will win. Blues have so many young defensemen and needed forwards. And Ottawa needs Rundblad. And besides Blues and Sens are in different conferences.
@Beradical23 i agree on most of what you said except the 2nd last part, truly IMO sens dont need rundblad, people seem to forget erik karlsson... can anyone name me 1 true sens prospect that is NOT a defeceman or a goaltender? yeah i didnt think so. but hey sens have a bad rep with russians: kovalev, gonchar, Oleg Saprykin, with the exception of volchenkov and maybeee yashin. and we have great history with swedes: alfie karlsson soon to be lehner so why not rundblad too
Tarasenko plays on the third line on his team, and the KHL doesn't award secondary assists. When you combine that with the fact that he was injured and still put up similar stats to Ovechkin and Malkin when they played in Russia, it just shows how good of a player Tarasenko is. That's not a slight on Rundblad either; he's going to be fantastic for the Senators.
I was shocked when this happened, but look how Tarasenko has dropped off this year, and look at what a Stud Rundblad has been this year in the Swedish Elite League. Search Magic Number 7 to see Rundblads highlights.
The way he led Russia at the WJC showed tons of depth and character so amazing steal by the Blues!
I'm sick of Russian players not getting enough recognition like they used to because of the "Russian Factor" as of late, but hopefully it won't be like that at the next draft.
Jesus, Melrose has a massive man crush on this boy.

Damn Blues are going to be good. So much youth, and already one of the top teams in the NHL. The future is bright in St. Louis

This is a good deal for both sides, most trades are uneven but this is a Win-Win.
