First, great song, but what is so shocking is the fact that - Gregg Rolie's a pretty good singer, BUT - here you get to compare pretty good against an incredible singer: and my god, what a difference.
Like enjoying the sight of a pretty girl ... and suddenly Angelina Jolie walks in the room.
Ok, so I'm a HUGE fan of Punk/Hardcore and various types of Metal (the more evil, the better) but there's just nothing better than Steve Perry and Journey!!! In my opinion, anyways.
@StoneyMcJuicyBuds No, not a homosexual. I am VERY much a heterosexual. I actually do VERY well with the ladies too, I might add. But how does my sexual preference come into play here??? Why would you, an apparent redneck, homophobic, conservative scumbag, who couldn't get a date to save your life, care what my sexual preference is?!?! Or were you just trying to insult me??? Because coming from a loser nobody like you, it lacks importance. Now go lose some more brain cells, McGreazyPud :]
I agree, is there a better lead singer than Steve? I won't buy anything that isn't real Journey....Steve, Neal, Ainsley, Greg.... Accept no substitutes!!!
This is one great song, one of Journeys many great songs. Todays "artists" will not be remembered or listened to 30yrs from now. What happened to the hair?
VH-1 BACK THEN ??? Did you read the listing? Can you read for that matter? I hope you're not doing a research paper, Because you just failed !! LOL !!!
LOL! Where do you think MTV and then VH1 came from?? You do realize that film and television began way before your parents thought about conceiving your ass, right?!
@Music4evs101 you must be talking about Greg Rolie. He was with Santana; he left that band with Neil Schon to form Journey. He left Journey in 1980 to go solo. He's great ; check out some early Santana stuff with him on lead vocals, plus a mean keyboard!!
@stoneydog1000 lol actually my dads friend was logged into my account and he keeps trying to trick my bro and i saying he was in this band and now nobody knows him because he changed his name and everything, lol hes not tricking us at all but he sings EXACTLY like that and looks almost EXACTLY like that!!!! its creeppyy.... im only 12 idk anything about this band lol but it was nice meeting u ;)
pfft... for a 5' almost a half foot guitar player... Neil Schon F'n rocks his balls off... I met him at the sound check for the Endemion ball soundcheck in NOLA in '06... the guy is a great performer, talent and human individual... he is Neil Schon and he knows it... and he's okeedoke with it... great guy, all the way around... AND... a huge Guitar player, for being 5' 6'.... he was short to me... I'm a monsterous 6' 3" 220#.... he made me feel weak in my knees...
@Tinaerwinboy no they had a show called the Midnight Special that features older bands. Live. mtv came out in early 80"s then vh1 after that .. I was growing up then is it still on?
I love the guitar solo int 'feelin that way!' The ONLY problem is - it's one of the shortest solos of all time! :( I could get into it if it was 4 times as long. (And no, I'm NOT a woman! ha hah hah...)
Arnel never on his best day could be as good as Steve Perry on his worst day. I just saw Journey at the Allentown Fair a few weeks ago and was soooo disappointed. This video is the true Journey. Love this song.
@SanFran1966 Yeah the dude is Gregg Rollie formerly of Santana. Get a clue dude he was the "other" component of Journey for years. Whatta ya livin' under a rock?
Love this! Awesome! I'm going to see them this weekend. It won't be the same without Perry. Saw them in 1981...just one of the best concerts I've ever been to to this day. And I'm lucky enough to go to alot.
I'm glad these clips are posted, and the performances are great....but after watching this and the 'Do it Again' clip from Steely Dan, I have to ask: What's up with the editing?? Neil Schon's face doesn't appear in this at all, near as I can tell. You don't see the bass player either. In the Steely Dan clip there are omissions as well. Grrrr....
love hearing Greg Rolie and Steve Perry singing together, their voices work real well together, missed hearing this when Greag left the group, but still like their music
Well Wolfman...saw em in 1981 and was blown away how spot on they were...Steve sang right in my face...about 3 feet away...every time he would come over I would get crushed by the chicks....never forget it
@larsenken Your right, good thing for them they found Perry cause, Journey would be just a local band playing clubs....they were about to loose thier label, Perry added voice, lyrics, melodies, performance and most importantly sex appeal...ask any chick!
Much respect to Greg, but everytime I used to listen to this song I always anticipated with excitement Steve's vocal, "When the Summer's gone...". Love that part!
He can still sing, but he says he has a love hate relationship with it. Apparently he has almost a couple of hundred songs. We are WAITING for a new album STEVE!!!!!
Totally agree, but still love Greg's vocals on some of the early stuff. He doesn't have Steve's range but he takes care of 'Look into the Future' pretty well, and 'Spaceman'. Different styles, but both brilliant
Love seeing all the different renditions of the same song. Side by side they just show Perry's ability to change up any number and keep it fresh. Never canned, never phones it in-always puts new nuances and emotional shading on a number. A true virtuoso!

jajajajjaja, yes, such charisma. Well, since 10 years I love Journey but only last year I really saw to Gregg. Few time, but really he always had has something special. I miss those days...weekends with Soul Train, Don Kirschner's Rock Concert and Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special....good memories....great shows....wish we had shows like this now....where artists actually sang and played instruments!
Awesome song, represents the 70's very well. I used to watch Midnight Special every week. I wish we had something like it today. MTV never even came close.
Oh sure, but ask anybody with "no pubes" and they'll try to tell you it's all Arnel Piniero that is making Journey famous! RIGHT! I gotta call B.S. there was A baby boom in the 60's and AGAIN in the 80's and A good portion of the 80's boom Is thanks to Steve Perry! Something about the feeling in his voice, just melted the panties right off the girls, and made them want to know more about the feeling in his shorts!
I love the way how Gregg away from the microphone after singing "... am I just a fool. " His gestures kill me. Always he makes a special gesture as it moves away or approaches the mic to sing. I love him too, all of you couldn't imagine
never a Journey fan, but this song is great. Part Beatles, Hollies, Badfingerish. I realize Steve Perry has an amazing voice but to me he kills them. He's great on this song(s), but he's one step from Barry Manilow. Those outfits, his look, the perfect voice, decidely unrock.
@ztwench Steve only wanted the band to wait until he was able to put on the kind of show that he knew his fans deserved. He didn't want to sing, sitting on a stool for an entire concert. So unfortunately, instead of holding off for a little, the other members instead went for instant gratification... I know that I (and a lot of fellow Journey fans), lost respect for the other members. It was Steve who wanted to preserve that bands greatness, unfortunately that was ignored.
@mlbows11 I agree Steve Perry IS the Singer for Journey. I give a lot of credit to Steve Smith...he didn't want any part of a Kareoke Singer as a replacement.
@mlbows11 hey there -thanks for post btw!! i am a musician and the ego,s and dynamics in a band are fucking agita makin machines. And as Nanny always said"Your side-his side---then the Truth" I thin Gregg was a bit jealous myself. But i never played with that band.Ergo i know nada.
@mlbows11 Journey were under contract to tour and promote the album. Their label insisted that they tour, as the dates had already been scheduled and the claimed that none of the dates could be rescheduled. And yes, Schon and Cain had a big part of pushing for the tour, because they really did not like Steve Perry anymore. After his mother died, Perry began to act very strange, and they were looking for a way to get him out of Journey. This came from their manager Irving Azoff.
@mlbows11 You hit the nail flush. That's the truth, the whole thruth, and nothig but the truth. How many hits has Journey had without Steve Perry. That's right kiddies, 00000!!!!!
@mlbows11 Thank you!!! This is so true from true Steve Perry fans. They screwed Steve and if it wasn't for Steve joining them way back when the band was going to fold. He is the true VOICE!!! I can't stand Journey and don't know how ppl can continue to support them with what they did to Steve!
@ztwench You go ahead and have hip surgery and see how good you feel and how soon you start feeling back to yourself. Please! Walk in someone else's shoes.
@ztwench I agree! When" GR" left the band it was for me the "Beginning of the end." Journey was a "True" R&R Band until that point. Slowly they turned to a ballad-bubble-gum-commercial-machine. Jouney was the first live act I ever saw. They opened up for ELP in Seattle in 1978. SP had just joined the band, "Infinity" will always be in my top ten all time LP's.
Hey! I saw them open for ELP as well. But I'm pretty sure it was the summer of 1977. What a great concert! (@ Oakland indoor Coliseum) ELP had these huge cannons on either side of the stage, and when they blew, I must've jumped two feet.
@rodcarew1 Absolutely! Yes! I recall the cannons as well and it was 1977! I was blown away as it was my first "Real" big venue concert I had been to. Keith Emerson pulled a Hammond-Electric- Piano over on top of himself and played this wild improvised session during the show. Of course Karn-Evil 9 was the first encore if I remember correctly. What talent!
Gregg Rollie was extremely talented and him and Steve were awesome they way they traded verses back and forth. I heard Rollie was concerend about the direction the band was going and that's what left to him leaving. If this is true you could say it was a bad career move as I think he did some solo stuff and his career went on but no where even close to this level. Did Perry himself or his direction threaten him that much? One could only imagine what it could have been if Rollie had stayed.
@HMACDONALD69 to be honest she was very cute and hell in the sac. back then steve perry with that voice and that hair could be mistake for HOT CHIC HA HA .......
@MrTierra68 I agree a 100% and even though there are some people who don't like to admit it Perry WAS frequently mistaken for a girl in those days even by people who seen him in person. It took folks a minute to realize he wasn't a chick. Sometimes I think that is where the ultra tight jeans/pants came in, Steve wanted everyone to know he was NOT a girl. But Steve was very cute and I am sure great in the sack so he was a lot like your girl.
@chad7chad1, you are so right! Steve Perry is the Voice of AOR. This goof, @StoneyMcJuicy is a flipping weirdo!! Perry on!!

steve, arnel, augeri, all are incredible singers...
but perry has the legacy of soul in his voice
i think he's 28 or 29 here, glowing with the newness of it all
his tone is crystal-clear, unforced, and SO natural
people get jaded by the overplaying of recorded versions of hits
just listen to the stunning vocal riff at 3:10 - it's pure blues full of lilting emotion and range
no autotune, no me-generation-monotone-crap, no pseudo-technique
i think arnel's really good, but Perry is iconic

Oh sure, but ask anybody with "no pubes" and they'll try to tell you it's all Arnel Piniero that is making Journey famous! RIGHT! I gotta call B.S. there was A baby boom in the 60's and AGAIN in the 80's and A good portion of the 80's boom Is thanks to Steve Perry! Something about the feeling in his voice, just melted the panties right off the girls, and made them want to know more about the feeling in his shorts!

Is that Aynsly Dunbar in the back?

What a great band filled with talent. Great vocals and some of the most melodic guitar solos ever laid down. Great video.

Steve's nose was later donated to a sitcom that was predicted to be a bomb,
Everybody Loves Raymond.
So, never thumb your nose in disgust at what you don't understand.

The Gregg Rolle period of Santana was best, too

Billn1959 9 months ago 2

I can't stand Journey and don't know how ppl can continue to support them with what they did to Steve!
lonelygurl67 5 months ago
@ztwench You are so wrong.mlbows is right.
They did'nt want to wait for many reasons and one if them was Ross Valory needed money because he lost all the money he made with Journey.
If they would have waited for Steve to get better they would most likely still be together today.

daldog3 1 year ago 2
@ztwench I agree! When" GR" left the band it was for me the "Beginning of the end." Journey was a "True" R&R Band until that point. Slowly they turned to a ballad-bubble-gum-commercial-machine. Jouney was the first live act I ever saw. They opened up for ELP in Seattle in 1978. SP had just joined the band, "Infinity" will always be in my top ten all time LP's.
MrNewo123 1 year ago
@MrNewo123
Hey! I saw them open for ELP as well. But I'm pretty sure it was the summer of 1977. What a great concert! (@ Oakland indoor Coliseum) ELP had these huge cannons on either side of the stage, and when they blew, I must've jumped two feet.
rodcarew1 1 year ago

MrTierra68 1 year ago
@MrTierra68 I agree a 100% and even though there are some people who don't like to admit it Perry WAS frequently mistaken for a girl in those days even by people who seen him in person. It took folks a minute to realize he wasn't a chick. Sometimes I think that is where the ultra tight jeans/pants came in, Steve wanted everyone to know he was NOT a girl. But Steve was very cute and I am sure great in the sack so he was a lot like your girl.
