Good for him, as long as he's still able to hang out with other kids his age. A kid his age needs to be around kids his own age. I mean, he needs to learn humility and all that. Considering what goes on in some of my college classes, I would want to keep my 12 year old far away...Also, how weird would that be to have such a little kid in your lab group? I will be starting my first year teaching highschool math this upcoming september and I truly believe that there are numerous children out there who are able to do advanced math at a young age but nobody is aware of it

I think he is wonderful! it's hard when you know your child is capable to do more but the schools don't see it. I applaud this young man and his wonderful parents who saw a need in their child to further excel him.
My daughter age 12 (now 13) did the same thing, but we steered clear of any media. Heck, we home schooled too for a bit. How ironic. However, she selected a national program in another state that places the top 80 in the nation with kids their age and they stay together in college - this way they don't loose the social development and peer skills that are vital.

I live in this century. The percentages of kids who graduate high school by ethnic group according to the Urban Institute of research:
White - 74.9 Percent finish high school
Hispanic - 53.2 percent finish high school
Black - 50.2 percent finish high school
Only half of all black kids graduate high school and that's happening IN THIS CENTURY!! I'm supposed pretend that everything is okay? It's just that unlike some people, I actually pay attention to what's going on around me.

I know right? But you'd be surprised how many people think that education is not cool or "for white people." Look at some of the responses I got just from encouraging young people to value education more.
This is NOT one to "emulate" in the sense that only one kid (from all peoples) in maybe 100,000 can do well entering school at 11yo.
However, it is definitely important to hold him and his mother up as heroes, along with the university, and to show that such things are possible, and that it is completely cool for young men of color to excel in academics.

My daughter age 12 (now 13) did the same thing, but we steered clear of any media. Heck, we home schooled too for a bit. How ironic. However, she selected a national program in another state that places the top 80 in the nation with kids their age and they stay together in college - this way they don't loose the social development and peer skills that are vital.

This is good to see. It's beautiful to see that he has a mother who understands the value and power of education!! I just hope this kid doesn't let other kids or society convince him that it's not cool for a black kid to be smart, that he should only focus on sports/entertainment or that he should act a certain way to "keep it real". I live in this century. The percentages of kids who graduate high school by ethnic group according to the Urban Institute of research:
White - 74.9 Percent finish high school
Hispanic - 53.2 percent finish high school
Black - 50.2 percent finish high school
Only half of all black kids graduate high school and that's happening IN THIS CENTURY!! I'm supposed pretend that everything is okay? It's just that unlike some people, I actually pay attention to what's going on around me.

This is NOT one to "emulate" in the sense that only one kid (from all peoples) in maybe 100,000 can do well entering school at 11yo.
However, it is definitely important to hold him and his mother up as heroes, along with the university, and to show that such things are possible, and that it is completely cool for young men of color to excel in academics.
