  • In this section (10 years on) Sagan himself created the concept of nuclear winter, and he was the first to start muttering about "global warming" while NOT doing any research on it. If he had done research, he would have known that all planets go through periods of warming up and cooling down. These are part of the planetary life cyle and nothing we do is going to stop it. This is why Al Gore is being laughed it and why he has to resort to using fake computer images - because he has NO PROOF.

  • what's the music at the end?

  • That uplifting stuff right there. I just finished the whole series. I shall now go back and start watching from the beginning.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this series. I'd never seen it before and it's been a beautiful experience. I'm sorry I'm not old enough to have fully appreciated him when he was alive. He was a visionary.

  • WE HAVE COMPASSION!!!!!

    Isn't it incredible?

The very thing science or technology cannot provide, something by all means unnatural and unreasonable considering darwinisim etc, yet critical for our species to get past this paradigm shift. We just have to live with each other in peace, something humans are fond of.

I am sure a plenty of Alien civilizations died out because they could not meet this requirement for immortality.

  • @projectbrumaire Wait what? Science or technology can't 'provide' compassion? Of course they can't just like they can't provide any other emotion or character trait. Compassion or generosity or altruism is readily explained by evolution though and has been for quite some time. Peace :-)

  • @projectbrumaire

Compassion is not unreasonable, nor unnatural. It is an evolutionary advantage. Other species have it too, it's not unheard of in the animal kingdom.

  • it's almost as if human kind has been doomed to failure from the beginning. unless we become One Planet, we are finished. I can only hope that there are many other worlds where the inhabitants have chosen life.

  • carl sagan is one of d gr8est human beings who ever lived

  • @thescorpionking2020 He was a wishful thinker who got human nature wrong and "belived uncritically in progress" as his biographer Keay Davidson describes. In this bit we see him twisting history to make himself sound like a successful prophet, and this from a critic of religion and astrology! Everything new in 1990s history consisted of the world listening to him. Actually no

  • his words are so inspring

  • It's over :( I almost shed a tear after watching this episode. No work of art, no piece of amazing music, and no words other than Carl's have ever made me come this close to shedding a tear.....

  • Well, that's the end, I can't thank you enough for this.

  • Thanks for uploading mate - this series has persuaded me to purchase my own copy :)

I'm reading through the book right now, and it is just as awesome.

  • I still hear Sagan's voice when I look at the nightsky, looking at the Milky Way, at the billions of stars out there, and imagining all the unknown worlds and life out there.

  • Being something every human should see, Cosmos is probably the most reasonable thing ever posted on Youtube.

  • As a note of interest:

Cosmos has been seen by over 500 million people.

These are not repeatable 'hits', but actual individual viewings by individual people. Ignore the fact this only has 7000 views here or 5000 on another upload.

Cosmos is seen by people all over the globe, subtitled in almost all the languages of the world.

There is nothing on YTube that even comes close to this number, even with repeated 'hits'.

"We are star-stuff, a way for the cosmos to know itself."

    We love you Carl.

  • @OneWorldHistory Thankyou.

  • wat is the song that starts at 4:29? i wanna know the name of the song sumbody help me plzz

  • @starryeyyed

Entends-Tu les Chiens Aboyer? - Vangelis

  • This needs to be required viewing material for public schools. Cosmos does have the potential to inspire young minds. Sadly when I watched this entire series, I felt that I learned more from Sagan than from all the science teachers I had from elementary through high school, combined. There's something wrong with the education system.

  • I cried during this episode

  • @Kabukita Me too. :)

  • I cannot thank the uploader enough for the profound sense of perspective and wonder that's been instilled in me by "Cosmos". In a perfect world, this would be required viewing for all humankind. We humans, with our propensity for ritual and self-delusion, need more men and women like Dr. Sagan. Men and women of vision who will shake us from complacency and remind us that we are all unified in the eyes of the universe.

TylerD113, I salute you. You've allowed me to witness a treasure.

  • ...and Carl Sagan was that god.

  • May he live forever in the hearts of the humans who thinks like him.

  • "Perhaps we have, after all, decided to choose life."

  • I can't recall who asked but (1980) "The Music of Cosmos" is the soundtrack. :)

  • RIP Dr Sagan. Hopefully, others will rise to continue your work of making humanity a lil' bit smarter every day... :)

  • Just wanted to say a huge 'thank you' to TylerD113 and everyone who uploaded this series. I watched it all with my jaw hitting the floor at every turn!

There is an incredibly important message from Sagan and many others that needs to be given the attention it deserves; value your fellow human beings over anything else and only then can we progress as a species in peace like it is supposed to be. I believe that is the 'factory default' for us and we've become lost along the way.

    Thanks again!

  • I'd really like to see the oiginal ending, the one without the update. Not because of what Sagan says, it just happens that the update it breaks the perfect original ending.

  • RIP Carl. Thanks TylerD113.

I had read Contact by Carl and had thought that he was a sci-fi author. Didnt know that he was a scientist, educator and inspirer par excellence.

  • I can't believe I just saw this entire series. Bloody brilliant! I am left speechless as I contemplate that this man was capable of effectively compressing much of general science into just a few hours.

Definitely deserves a spot in the top 100 humans ever to live.

Other than naming a unit of 4 billion after him (yes the quantity of 4 billion is in fact called a sagan), I propose that the first human shuttle to exit the solar system be named "The Carl Sagan"

p.s ty to Vangelis for the music

  • This was how many years ago?

And we are still learning from it.

Thank you Carl Sagan! You will never be missed!

  • Get out.

  • ok Libertyjedi. That was probably the most stupid shit I've ever read. Thank you.

  • Please remove your comments. Why taint such a awesome conclusion to an awesome series with such jargon?

RIP Dr. Sagan. You have motivated at least 1 person to make science their profession.

  • =) No trolls allowed in such an inspiring motivation, you've been spam marked...and following that, will be promptly ignored.

  • Best show on Earth..Thank you Dr.Carl..

  • It's 6 minutes to midnight now

  • Maybe he's right, maybe we have chosen life. The cold war is a thing of the past, and the ozone layer has recovered. I think we are going to be allright in the long run.

I just finished watching this series, probably the best I've ever seen. What a bittersweet feeling to see the credits rolling for the last time...

  • The ozone layer hasn't recovered.. in fact climate is getting worst by day. Sadly there are too many people in self-denial, even in our congress, who would rather spread lies than promote public awareness and do something about it.

  • RIP Carl,

I am sure that you are being caressed in heaven for your lifes work which has brought us such knowledge amd messages of hope and love.

    God bless your beautiful soul...

  • @awesomejohnnet

If you pay a bit of attention you realize that the gods and their fan clubs were among of the major things Carl Sagan was against.

  • Rest in peace carl sagan!! I'm 22 also and have just been watching all of the episodes. Im truely amazed by what I have learned.

I hope we choose life over death.

  • Can you just be quiet? You've been writing nonsense in every part of this episode...

  • whats the name of the end (credits theme) 4:28 ??? anyone plz??? album etc..?? i have look for it .. original OST dont have it.. in any of the (3) compilations...

  • I can't tell you the name, but it's definately by Vangelis.

  • And so, it ends...leaving me with that eternal sadness, that unsatisfiable longing, yet with an immense happiness and a perfect peace.

    Thank you for posting these.

And thank you, Carl Sagan, for sharing a little bit of your world and wealth of knowledge with us.

  • And to think after all of sciences victories, once again religion threatens to plunge us back into the dark ages.

It's almost as if what carl did for us was for nothing.

  • Speak out against religion, hate, injustice, nationalism, racism, bigotry, intolerance and hate.

  • I have just finished watching this series, for the first time. I am 22 years old and am amazed by the things I learned, as well as appauled as to why I have not seen this before.

  • ditto

  • I just hope more people all aourd the World could recieve this message from Carl, i'm 22 but most of my friends barely know who Carl Sagan was and this series can teach you, Carl Sagan nunca olvidare lo que me haz enseniado, Greets from Mexico.

  • this is a highly emotive telling; no doubt carl sagan was, besides an accomplished scientist, a great storyteller and he has woken all of ours enthusiasm for science and the surrounding worldand and our imagination.

I just watched the whole series, once again since i was a child back in the early 80s, (i'm 37 now) and again it has not failed to impress me deeply.

Thanks so much for Carl Sagan

  • Carl Sagan was the greatest educator of the 20th century and Cosmos his lovesong to nature.

  • Just beautiful. I've watched every one of these episodes and I can't thank the posters enough.

  • Well, he really and truly cared about humanity. This was the only home he had too and he certainly didn't want to be blown up either. Maybe he hoped some of the leaders of the other nations would hear that special show and realize how foolish they were being with all the nuclear bombs and threatning and posturing that goes with that sort of thing. Maybe they would understand they would blow themselves up too, and not just their enemy whoever it was, Carl could really tell it like it is! Thanks!

  • Hey, ones real plus side of all those nuclear bombs is that they make excellent, cheap propulsion for getting stuff into space. A friend of my works for a company that uses disarmed ICBMs for launching research satillites.

  • I read this book when I was 15 and now I'm 37 and have watched the TV series for the first time. Carl was already a hero of mine but to hear his voice and see his mannerisms for the first time on top of reliving the whole Cosmic story has been very emotional.

Thanks to all the people who uploaded the video clips. Thanks to Ann, Kip and all of Carl's illustrious colleagues and, of course, thank you Carl. xxx

    Chris - Glasgow - 28/08/09

  • Damn we know so much yet do so little

  • Aww man Carl way to get my eyes all watery... Thanks buddy.

  • Thanks Carl.

  • Thanks to all who posted this video,. It is very inspiring indeed and so easy to understand even if I am not a scientist. Sagan is brilliant.

I have shared this to all members of my family and I do hope that they will pass this on too. I have shared this as well on my facebook and will do on our social network pages.

You are all an inspiration too who posted comments .

Thanks once again to Carl Sagan and of course to all those who posted his works like TykerD113

  • Thank you Carl.

And thank you TylerD113 for posting this epic.

Reading the comments posted under these videos, I also feel a connection with those of you who have viewed this remarkable series. May we all continue to pass on Dr. Sagan's message; his respect for the realm of science, of truth, rationality, peace and harmony among all of us...star-stuff that has emered into consciousness.

  • this series is an inspiration, it makes me feel all the more privileged to be a student of the cosmos. thanks for uploading!

  • IT ENDED!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!

  • I also just finished the whole series and want to join everyone else who watched it with a thank you to those who uploaded it. Being just 21 years old this was my first chance to watch it.

  • His words are so profound and timeless.

  • @joshuaki3

this man will finish my life, and my tools and my intellegence will guide the future

  • Very inspiring series. Rest in peace Carl Sagan, return to the stars from whence you came.

  • People need to read Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Sagan and Druyan. It's just as good as this Cosmos series.

  • By the way, I KNOW we can make it. I am NOT giving up hope just now.

  • I´ve just finished the last chapter of the whole saga of this marvelous and extraordinary series. Thank you very much to all the people who posted this real jewel of knowledge. You guys are the best!!!

Congratulations to Ann Druyan too who had the luck to share her life and her dreams with the best man in the world. She and the other people who surrounded Carl were real heroes.

  • We dont´t have such an incredible man as Carl so frequently. It was a terrible thing to have lost him very soon, but at the same time we gained a lot because of his deep messages and teachings and of course his existence.. Still I cry for him. Wherever you are, we all love you and miss you a lot Carl. Thank you for being an authentic hero and a true man.

  • I´ve just finished the last chapter of this marvelous and extraordinary series,no doubt the best documentary ever created in all aspects. It was wonderful to remember my boyhood, as I had the great luck to watch him in those days. Carl Sagan was the best teacher I ever had, definitively one of the best human beings that lived in our planet. He made not only that millions of people awake, take a look, and increase their interest about science but also helped to many of us choose the correct career.

  • This series was nothing short of amazing. I found myself wanting more but if you think about it, it's not necessary.....Carl covered EVERYTHING !!! Rest in Peace Carl, you have rejoined the cosmos from which you came and to which we all will return.

  • RIP carl sagan

  • Thanks a zillion for this awesome series of documentaries by one of the biggest visionaries of contemporary science. Sagan lives with every viewer of this series. What happened to episodes 1,2,3 and 6? They are available in other versions but this one should be completed out of respect to Sagan's legacy. Can TylerD113 do something about it?

    Thanks anyway...

  • </3

  • How can something so important to our delicate species only have 853 views (at the moment I write this), but other videos such as Evolution of Dance, as funny as it is, has over 90 million views. The way I see it we as a species do not have the ability to survive. Let's face it, there are too many stupid and unsophisticated people focused on things that are unimportant to society, such as celebrity worship. Think about it, how many people have heard of Lindsey Lohan over Carl Sagan?

  • Although we continue to advance, those advancements allow our lives to become easier and most of our population take it for granted slowly dumbing down our society and causing the conflicts Sagan described. I experience this first hand in high school, as I observe kids who I remember were smart in elementary and junior high school, have lost that through materialism, drug abuse, and pure carelessness. It is a truly sad reality.

  • I agree very much with you. I feel the same about society at the moment. I don't know which country you are from, but in the UK there are no regular science programs on maintstream channels on a regular basis. The media culture just seem utterly hooked on big brother, sad really.

  • It disturbs me that rich people in developed countries waste their lives when MILLIONS of brilliant kids in developing nations, who are much more deserving, never receive the chance or opportunities to live an

"easy" life or have a proper education.

  • Excellent video - Thank you for posting!

  • Thank you for posting this. Sadly, when this was done, Carl was only starting to explore the issue of anthropocentrism. Had this been done, say, in '96, we probably would have heard more about the other species we share Earth with.

  • Thanks for posting these man!

  • awesome dude. curious, are you going to upload the first three episodes as well?

  • the first three are already uploaded

go to my blog in my profile to find all the episodes organized in order

  • ah okay thanks so much dude :)

  • np

anything to help more people see Cosmos

  • @TylerD113 do you know the name of the music at the credits? i've been trying to search for it for several months and i still cant find it

  • I am 28, Have a 3 year old fascination (growing steadily) for science and the natural world...and the cosmos. It took me 3 YEARS of studying things (in layman's terms) sciences like biology, astronomy, philosophy, chemistry, genomic s, history, geography, religion etc before i stumbled upon Carl Sagans Cosmos series, it makes me wonder HOW i could have missed this pearl for so long. Its as epic as it is full of facts and wonders. So many thanks to you for uploading it.

  • I watched it with my dad when I was growing up in the early 80s.

Its so awsome. I watch it over and over again and Im 39 years old now. You can get the whole set on DVD for about a hundred dollars:-)

  • When I was young I used to be so bored by the sciences and mathematics. I was a poor student because I was apathetic towards learning.

I could kick myself now. I feel there is so much to learn that I could spend lifetimes learning.

Anytime that I hear someone with the same passion for science that Carl Sagan I am filled with an unmeasurable reverence for science.

I can only hope that Sagan's work on this series is rewarded with new generations of scientist that follow in his wake.
