i found that the strings are very important to how "power chords" sound. i string my axe like this. maybe try it. this has never let me down. .046 , .036 , .026 , .014 , .011 , .009 . the .014 is the killer one. if your a lead guitarist like me, you'll "get it". all of my guitars are wired with the bridge pickup ran straight through to a vol put only. no tone pots. all other pickups and the 5-way selector. is all disconnected. just one humbucker in the bridge position with a mear vol pot.

@Daftfreak123 true . what i mean is, well, i have three stratocasters, a bullet and an 89' squier II stratocaster. two of mt stratocasters are set up the exact same way, pickups and all. and i've had them with different string setups at different times. i did a test where i had one with mear light guage set of strings. and the other with a heavy bottom /light top string set up. well, it's like night and day. the heavy bottom/light top set up blew away the light guage set up.

palm mutiing is using the palm of your right/left hand touching the strings to mute them but not too much it is often used in metal and in songs like whole lotta love by led zeppelin

You have to learn that in guitar, the tiniest sound difference is useful. There is no such thing as a dumb beginner technique. The Ramones have sold millions of albums while Yngwei Malmsteen never made the charts. THe guitar is your canvas and your paintbrush your fingers - there is no wrong. Get creative and if it truly sounds good to you, then work with it and improve it as you get better at the guitar and you'll find you have your own distinct style! Oh and take lessons! For realz :)
