  • Wow, this is a really good mix. I like the way you used the Smiley Smile chorus vocals with the Cantina mix verse.

  • what version of the song is this?

  • mike love is a cunt

  • Columnated Ruins Domino Mike!

  • Is one of the cops Dan Aykroyd???

  • @SofaCitySweetheart Yes, this is from a TV special that was produced by Lorne Michaels, it's Belushi and Akroyd!

  • @sfan1 Thanks! I knew I done spotted 'im.

  • Every Hero needs his Villain

  • there was a vid out here called "Fuck you Mike Love". I can't find it now but it was hillarious!

  • Brian Wilson = Hero

    Mike Love = Villain

  • @dorkhunter1 yeah Smile really sucks ass, that's why when Brian redid it, it was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and won Best Rock Instrumental....40 years after it was originally conceived. Mike Love tried to sue him over the whole matter but was laughed out of court. The comment to which I'm responding is a year old, but I thought you might be interested...or rather, I was interested in presenting you with the facts.

  • no one will ever know how much cash from copyright royalties mike love has squandered away from beneath brian's nose by getting his name tacked onto the credits as a cowriter with minimal contributions like "goodnight baby, sleep tight baby." I love Brian Wilson, the man is a genius. Mike Love contributed some very enjoyable vocal performances over the years, but nothing legendary or out of the ordinary really. The Wilson Brothers were the Beach Boys.

  • Mike Love not war

  • Mike Love.

You ARE the musical equivalent to Richard Nixon.

  • I'm sure there are millions of BB fans like myself who wouldn't be fans if not for Mike Love's bass/baritone voice and showmanship. I remember vividly how "square" the BB's seemed to me initially in '64 (I'd say dorky, but it didn't have today's meaning).

It wasn't until the irreverent and interesting Mike Love caught my eye on TV that I started to become a BB fan. It appears he became greedy later, but that in no way erases his contributions nor the impact of the BB's on my life's memories.

  • @SouthwestVINYL you are correct that Mike Love's freewheeling attitude may have attracted some young whippersnappers back in the day, and i will concede that he did contribute some memorable vocal performances to several tracks, he could have been easily replaced, he was the least musically talented beach boy (as i'm sure you know, he didn't even play an instrument), and it is a fact that his creative contributions were quite minimal during their heyday.

  • I LOVE MIKE LOVE...

  • Note from John Lennon to Mike Love: "Instant Karma's gonna get you, baby!" Meditate on it. Believe it.

  • @dorkhunter1 Dude--you need to come up from under Self Love's desk for some fresh air. You're starting to halucinate!! LMAO!!

  • dorkhunter1, maybe it's because I don't spend a lot of time on youtube, but I've rarely seen so much ignorance packed into one little comment. There are books out there about this stuff, even about pet sounds, but I recommend something a little more general to introduce you to music as a whole

  • gee, where can I begin dorkhunter1...

"only a bass player''? have you ever heard of a little album brian wilson played bass on called 'pet sounds'. besides playing bass by the way, he also composed all the songs on it, and sang on those tracks too. And what if he was 'just' a bass player? is the bass a less legitimate instrument than the guitar or something? oh wait, it has less strings than a guitar (most of the time)... now i see where you're coming from.

  • @wussupichu - I agree with your thoughts on Brian Wilson but he didn't play bass on Pet Sounds at all - he wrote the bass parts but the Wrecking Crew recorded all the music - Brian was too deep into producing at that time to concern himself with performing - Brian Wilson is my hero!

  • fuck mike love!

  • DorkCUNTer I know what his name is .I just like to call him mick.

  • werD. fuck Mike Love.

  • Fuck Mike Love.

  • Fuck Mike Love.

  • Dorkhunter how can anybody be so passionate towards mick love.Unless you are mick himself.Hmmmm

  • Brian Wilson was, is and always be the Beach boys, not the strutting chrome dome jerome Rooster known as Mike Love. I will never pay money to see the clone band "Beach Boys" led by, as John Lennon called him "jerk" Mike Love. People who think Mike Love is the reason for the success of the Beach Boys have lost reality contact. Brian Wilson is the talent, Mike Love is truly a villain and was lucky to be a cousin and ride the Wilson brother's coat tails.

  • Cool video. A mentally unstable Brian Wilson trying his hand at surfing, amazing.

  • That is John Belushi and Dan Akroyd (as the cops)...I believe for SNL early days...

  • brian wilson and mike love ,the answer to lennon mccart........are you kidding me ???

  • in england we had paul mccartney and john lennon, in america you had brian wilson, who is as good if not better. mike love was nothing.

  • ohh jea 3.10 exactly!!! you´re absolutly right!!!!!!

  • I hope Mike Love one days loses everything, and ends up shooting Heroin somewhere on Skid Row. What a complete loser douche bag. NO TALENT ASS CLOWN. AL JARDINE, BRIAN, DENNIS, AND CARL WILSON WERE THE BEACH BOYS

  • John and Dan look so young WOW. Man that My Glove sing or not looks like a butthole in every vid. i see him in. {can you say PUTZ} boys and girls} ;}p

  • This is GREAT! Thank you for putting this together, suparni! Mike Love is and has always been a legend in his own mind.

  • aw thanks birdman! you are so right about Mike.

  • Wow somebody has great taste! Moz and BDW..Thanks for the video.. the editing was perfect! I'm 21, I have been a musician all my life..and when I discovered the work Brian did in 66/67 it changed my entire life...god bless the gentle soul of Brian Wilson...God only knows how we feel about you...we SMiLE for you!

    PS: FUCK YOU MIKE LOVE!

There is a special place in hell for you where Kokomo plays nonstop...enjoy!

  • @RCXSTR Mike Love has his devils just like the rest of us. No regrets here

  • Mike Love is a cock.

  • Soooo true.

  • Great footage. All PoP fans should check out a new site called SONGHEADS with the ultimate collection of obscure 60's pop gems!

  • Why isn't clip credited as either The Beach Boys or Brian Wilson & Van Dyke Parks (the Writers)?

It seems Mike Love's major contribution was to get in the way any time Brian tried something new. For Mike, this fell under the heading "Brian Music", i.e. self indulgent that wasn't in the best interest to the band or chartable hits.

  • it isn't titled that so Mike Love searches can also enjoy reality.

  • I concede to your wisdom.

Too bad the guy who used maintain a Van Dyke Parks fansite doesn't still have up the results of the best Mike Love joke.

Now that was a reality to savor!

  • Oh I am sorry I missed that one. I love all jokes at his expense. xoxoxo VDP!

  • @himself801 It seems that if Mike didn't think he could make money off something, he hated it.

  • Right On, suparni ! Dorkhunter-just get off the air, you sad case. You're nothing but a serial pest & nuisance to we legion of Brian Wilson admirers. How can you NOT love and respect the man, after all that he's been thru, yet BW has come thru hell and has recovered magnificently. So, Dork, Go Listen to something or someone you actually LIKE - whatever THAT is, God Only Knows - so you can comment in POSITIVE ways. Instead of this constant bitter-mouthed dribble you perpetually spew out.

  • Mike Love may very well be Satan.

  • It's possible.

  • The Beach Boys would never have come into existence without Brian.

SMiLE would of come into completion and release if Mike didn't actively sabotage it.

Mike apparently doesn't like changing one iota from a proven formula that sells. A lot people have commented that every time Brian presented any innovation was met with Mike's admonishment, "Brian, don't fuck with the formula". If Mike had his way, as long as multiple releases of "Surfin" charted, he would never enter the studio again.

  • Mike's contributions seem to be, he's a great front man on stage, has voice that is needed in the vocal tapestry woven by Brian of been arrange, and has on some occasions written worth lyrics, but he seems to have a reputation of bullying and bulldozer over people to get his way.

Any money Mike has made from Pet Sounds and SMiLE, independent of tampering with lyrics to get his name on the copyright, is immoral, unjust, and even with successful litigation, thief.

  • dorkhunter1, if Mike was/is such a sterling creative person, then his two, count em, two outside Beach Boy albums "Celebration" has a member of Celebration, and "Look Back with Love"* would not only out shine Brian in critical stature, they would have popular success that would still be in print or at least re-issue.

*is regarded as the absolute nadir of Curt Boettcher's career as a producer. Curt produced "Along Comes Mary" for the Association.

  • dorkhunter1, I assume you own and treasury the only Beach Boy album, with absolutely any partcipation from Brian, "Summer In Paradise", an album hated by critics and BB fans alike.

According to Wkipedia, it sold less than 1,000 copies and bankrupted Navarre who pressed and distributed.

I have admit it does have great artwork, I'd buy it as a frameable print.

By the way Stan Love is Mike's brother.

  • Should be, "dorkhunter1, I assume you own and treasury the only Beach Boy album, with absolutely NO any partcipation from Brian"

  • Just bought Brians latest CD.Well worth waiting for.... the guy is just amazing considering all he has been through. Thank god Mike "Baldy" Love hasnt wormed his way into Brians career and tried to jump on the the back of his recent successes.....he is a talentless twat who should have stayed pumping gas.

  • Amen! I love the new song "midnights another day" I love Van Dyke Parks and Brian together again and free of Mike Love. Let Brian create in peace... and go tour alone as "the beach boys" with cover bands love...

  • Nerdstalker2 checkin' in.

  • It is referring to Mark Twain. He happens to be my favorite author. Why would you throw around words like fag on here? I was asking a simple question about your "name". Anyways, I happen to feel that most of Brian's earlier works are very underrated. There were amazing songs that never really made their way to the masses. But fyi Brian wrote both the music and melody to "warmth of the sun" which was written about the assasination of JFK, until Mike Love's silly lyrical changes about girls.

  • settle down you idiots. Stop gay bashing and keep to the issues or you will be blocked and comments removed. No i am not gay, in fact I am a heterosexual woman, but I am not going to stand for this fly over state ignorance on my video. Idiots.

  • Hi suparni. My comments were in no way aimed at you. I am a very big fan of Brian's and am just trying to figure out how a person could compare Pet Sounds to nursery ryhmes. And considering the fact that Mike Love did write most of the garbage in the post-Brian years, how he finds that music to be, as he says it would be a "Masterpiece". But again, I am no homophob. Just didn't understand what "Dorkhunter" meant.

  • Is dorkhunter a gay reference? Like.. you hunt male sex organs?

  • Be honest.. this is Mike Love posting this right?? Maybe Stan?

  • hahaa oh my god, you are deranged..what a moron! HAHAHAHA..wow....honestly.wow, dude..as if mike had any direction for the beach boys..unless you count his cheesy fuckin stage antics hahah..he was good until 66..then he got so fuckin lame.

  • Have you taken your medication?

    Rob

  • fuck mike love

    =linux2.0=

  • 1996 called; they want their kernel back.

  • iowhdoiqwhdoiwhdoiwhdoiwehdfoiwehfoie hHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAhA

  • Like Looking Back with Love? First Love? Mike Love Not War? Wait wait, nobody likes that crap...2 of them were released and did terribly and the other will never be released.

  • PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF BAWAHAHAHAH whatever!!!! see ya!

  • Mike love is an ass hole...

    Trou du cul, in frech!!

  • Fuck You Mike Love!!!!!!!

  • I don't particularly like Mike as a person or his political beliefs; but the raw fact is that Mike wrote ALL of the lyrics and some music for the top grossing songs. Brian wrote VERY few lyrics and still required a collaborator. E.g. "In My Room". Mike has his claim. It's all very sad. -Friends for 50 years and then suddenly not. Carl was the force that kept it all together -& Carl had the best voice. God Bless Carl Wilson. V.D. Parks wrote most of Heroes and Villains. Life taint so simple.

  • Mike didn't want to write lyrics beyond "surfing", "fast cars" or "cute girls".

Top grossing doesn't always mean it's great music. John Q. Public is notoriously shallow. Brian worried that such music would pidgeonhole the group(he was correct)and that's why he moved on to other collaborators. Sorry if Mikey was jealous but he did it to himself. And I would love to hear ML create the wonderful music and harmonies that made Brian famous. Sorry, but I don't think he has it in him!

  • EXACTLY!

  • You did not read my comment. It had nothing to do with "Art". It had everything to do with hard work and money. -Ever been in a money-earning band?

And who says Mike didn't write any fair lyrics? California Girls & Good Vibrations are not exactly chopped liver. If you can explain the lyrics of Heroes and Villains, you should ring up Van Dyke, because he admits not really understanding those lyrics. With the BBs the lyrics were always meant to support the vocals.

  • Mike added a little bit here and a little bit there to Good Vibrations... thereby making it cornier. VDP knew exactly what he was doing... on some level.

  • Nope. Mike wrote most if not ALL of the lyrics to Good Vibrations.

Everyone still misses my point, so I'll make it an oil painting: "F Mike Love" is in poor taste and plain dumb. -Particularly for someone you don't know squat about.

Mike Love was one of the finest lead and bass harmony singers in rock and roll. Those sliding bass lines were beautifully executed. For 20+ years, He & Brian were cheated out of a LOT of publishing royalties by Murry Wilson perfidy (i.e, Sea of Tunes).

  • Well i am going to make a photograph for your oil painting... He sued brian and Al and is an arrogant, limited, JERK (as John Lennon put it) and his condemnation and arrogance probably played the biggest part in aborting the SMILE project. He is and was artistically limited and socially overbearing, he is obnoxious and musically mediocre.

  • Please stop writing. You don't get "it" & you don't know Mike Love nor any of these people. Meeting someone once in a publicity setting doesn't count You know nothing of their relationship over the years and now. Don't you have real friends? Can't you just listen to the records and enjoy them? Why do you feel as though you must be a part of their lives? You're not a part of their lives, so get on with YOUR life and stop posting foul language about someone you don't know.

  • oh and I love the music of Brian Wilson - so my social life has nothing to do with it... I mourn the loss of music that I personally feel love had a part in destroying and stifling - it has nothing to do with me thinking these people replace real friends or whatever your sick mind came up with... its everything to do with Achetypes, what they represent and reflect in society, and with wonderful music that love aborted - the former being the most concrete reason to detest him.

  • if you don't like it... go away... but don't tell me to stop writing on a video I posted... cause i wont

  • Nope, I guess everyone needs a career and you've found yours. More power to you.

  • actually I am a professional photographer and have plenty of work... thanks...

what did I expect from a Mike Love fan anyway... other than somebody who thinks they know everything. Jerk.

  • Untrue "Good Vibration"s lyrics were originally writen by Brian & Tony Asher with changes by Mike and additions by Van Dyke Parks, maybe Mike's & Van Dyke's contributions occurred in reverse order.

  • You have a great deal of faith in your beliefs.

  • What is your major music interest?

With the screen name BixLives32 it would suggest Jazz, 1920's/Paul Whiteman era Jazz in particular.

It may be of interest to seek out the CD, "Wouldn't It Be Nice: A Jazz Portrait Of Brian Wilson" performed by various artist.

As I've been reading various articles, reviews and interviews over the last three decades, I have a fair degree of confidence in what I state. That said, not everyone in every instance imparts the the same information and opinion.

  • check

  • There is an article by ex-Beach Boy manager Jack Riley (1971-1973). Mike was pushing for just playing past hits. Riley had told the Wilson Bros. to join together as a united front to prevent the Beach Boys from becoming just an oldies band as they writing and recording new songs. The result was a meeting with Mike, Al Jardine & Bruce Johnson were Mike told him to but out because I am The Beach Boys.

  • Brian can write a complete songs on his own but prefers to bring in people who can do it better after they have conferences on what he wants them to communicate, which may be why he jettisoned Mike on "Pet Sounds" & "SMiLE". Mike probably wrote what he wanted without any consideration of Brian's input.

Mike & the guys generally considered "Pet Sounds" & "SMiLE" as Brian music when they were new.

  • I heard Mike Love is the king of stinky farts.

  • Ah-h-h-h, thanks, suparni! The pictures and words sung in the songs go together so well. I love the part where the words "dance Margarita" are sung as Mike Love is dancing onstage. Very clever!

  • and yes...mike love is an evil prick

  • you're right brabon .. I met Mike Love and he was indeed a prick to me. I also met Brian Wilson and he was absolutely the coolest guy... funny how the guy that reserves the right to be snobby was the nicest guy in the world.... and the "jack" that was riding Brian's coat tails was the prick!....lol.

  • is this the original SMILE track?

  • "The Ryan Marks "SMiLE" Reconstruction Project" tape - so yes... original track

  • Believe it or not, I hadn't even watched the Video. I was listening to the music the first few times, because I hadn't heard some of the sections of Heroes and Villains in their original SMiLE era/Beach Boy Vocals Sound. He was so close to finishing it, if the 2004 version is something to go by.

  • Is this the Good Vibrations Box Set Version of "Heroes and Villains"?

Or did you edit differet pieces together?

  • HI JBnut, I got this from "The Ryan Marks "SMiLE" Reconstruction Project" tape

  • do you know why the lovester felt this song did him damage????????????

  • why no, please tell us... Is it because of the theme I played upon in the vid? :D

  • I wonder when this video with the police and Brian was filmed? I'm guessing it was post Smile era, and even after Sunflower.

  • The "police" were Saturday Night Live comedians John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, who were good friends of the Beach Boys. It was filmed for a 1976 TV special called "The Beach Boys: It's OK." Belushi and Aykroyd are credited as writers on the special. The woman who answers the door is Brian's first wife, Marilyn.

  • i thought it was a bit taken from snl

  • No, it was not shown on SNL. Here's the info about that skit, taken straight from the SNL website: "Lorne Michaels was a Beach Boys fan and later that year (1976) produced a Beach Boys special for television that chronicled the story of the band and featured a comedy skit where John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, dressed as cops, accosted Brian in his bed and took him surfing (Brian Wilson did not surf and was famously afraid of the beach)."

  • GREAT! Heroes & Villains is a good analogy for Brian and Mike. All that nastiness! And imagine firing AL JARDINE, then suing him for using the name "Beach Boys Family & Friends" in a group that included Brian's daughters and Al's son? That's Mike Love for ya. Brian & Mike wrote great songs together, too bad Mike is such a soulless jerk. Let's give a shout-out to Van Dyke Parks, SMILE lyricist and Brian's friend, and to the incomparable music of the Beach Boys. Mostly, thank you, Brian.

  • thank you caraphyllis! and yes, mostly... thank you Brian - THANK YOU BRIAN WILSON!

  • the lovester dancin is hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • haahha thank goodness somebody laughed...this vid had one star rating and some hate message for me before you got the humour!

  • mike love will be frying in hell!
