Beautiful machine... and programming :) This is an awesome demo and has really helped me make up my mind about this synth (just like your Juno demos made up my mind about a Juno 60). Keep up the great work acid brother.
so the jx-3p can only use presets if it doesnt have the pg-200 so shape the sounds? cause im looking at a jx-3p on ebay now and if i cant shape the sounds better myself without the pg200 thats kind of a dealbreaker..
you can control everything - envelopes, filters etc without the PG200,and store 32 'user presets' into the JX-3P... but, the controller just makes it more 'hands on' and fun... unfortunately you can't use the controller with the JX-3P when it's in Midi mode
For us, yes--but the truth is, a lot of keyboardists were not interested in programming, hence the programmer was sold as an ad-on.
It's sad but true...this is what led to the dreaded dx-7 and other digital synths, where musicians ONLY used presets for the most part.
Only a small group of artists took the time to program their synths....95% of DX-7 users back then only used the factory sounds, because the damn thing was impossible to program.
@MARANTZamp I agree, that damn "modern EP" sound vexes me to this day. I think that's the only sound bands like Chicago used in the 80's. All and all the six operators of the DX7 can make some pretty brilliant sounds if you put the work into it, but nobody wanted that. They just wanted a "piano" they could put in a case.
Love the 3PO. I have to say that editing without the programmer although confusing at first, is actually pretty easy once you get the concept of using 1 fader to do everything, although the pg-200 would be much better of course.
I hate using the chorus of it on most things.
The MIDI died on mine :(
Such early MIDI, no way to have it only accept 1 channel, but I'd love to have my midi IN working anyway!
love the 3p sequencer.. i gotta put up a sample of mine real soon .. like this weekend..
p.s good see a person who knows ther way around the 3p .. awesome machine .. i would never ever sell mine... its the only synth ive kept after owning a yamaha cs30, juno 6, split 8 , ms2000 though i do still have an atc-1 ...
That sounds pretty nice. And does anyone think that if an external chorus effect was applied it might come close to the juno 6/60 sound? Im torn between buying one of these or a juno. This has midi and a pretty decent sound, but the juno has awesome chorus and all controls built in... Also, if these are just as programmable without the pg200, then I could use this plus extra chorus for like 300 less than a juno6 or 60. Any thoughts?
Well, I have a JX-3P without a PG-200 and I have to admit that even though you can edit the same parameters without the it I would never be able to be this creative and it's certainly very hard to do these quick edits in real time, though I guess it is possible. If you just want to be able to create patches then the JX-3P will save you a lot of money. As for the chorus, I use the internal and add external chorus all of the time and I think it sounds excellent, super fat. Hope that helped :)
Not really. The way I understand it is that it's pretty much just a midi controller with different pins; The oscillators, filters, etc. are all on the JX-3P, the PG200 just makes controlling their parameters easier.
J, I would like to know if you are using only the two components (JX3p & PG200? If so, which has the sequencer? And is your sample time limnited and or can you sample and overlay sound on sound? Thanks, Looking at this combo so your help would be great. Thanks, Nice vid! Thanks
I'm not sure I know what you mean. This is a closed circuit. Just JX3p + PG200, a power cable and an audio cable. The melody comes from the JX3p's onboard sequencer. The changes in tone and timbre and whatever come from the PG200.
CQQL, That's it, you answered it! I wasn't sure if you had other components running in the background, other synths, sequencers so on... although you can and many do, I wanted a simple breakdown, you got it. thanks man.
great demo dude, one of the best-looking / cute synthesizer also, beautiful analog sound...

you can edit without the programmer just fine..but I recommend the JX-8P over the 3P.
MARANTZamp 2 years ago
Roland should have built the PG-200 controller into the JX-3P body originally.

Yep...a marketing scheme to get only people who wanted to make their own sounds buy a programmer.
I guess roland started thinking that most musicians were lazy and would just use presets..lol
MARANTZamp 2 years ago
who would ever use most of the 3p's presets though? it only shines with the sequencer running and tweaking params obviously! ;)

It wasn't impossible, or even hard at all. Tedious and boring yes, a bit hard, yes, but not too hard.

95% of dx7 owners only used factory sounds, not their own.
This is why yamaha, and many 3rd party companies made a fortune from those sound carts!
Let's face it, there is nothing more daunting than attempting to program a friggin dx-7.
I'm glad I only paid $60 for mine

@elektrogeist I don't know, I use the first brass pre as a bass all the time, it's really a great sound on the low end.
