  • AWESOME!!

  • I got sick of reading back.i thought these comments were supposed to be about this incredible trumpet player playing this song and hitting those notes.its so hard to come anyway close to these notes.a lead trumpet player in ireland

  • Comment removed

  • I just played this at my band concert

  • were playing this in symphonic band!!

  • Playin' this right now!

    I'm the bass!

    <3

  • I am the bass too! I am in the jazz band and I play this song too!

  • Yeah? I'm the only girl in my jazz band and I'm rhthym section..... :| The guys get a kick outta that.....

It's my favortie song that we're playing, though. It's a interesting part, for once, instead of all quarter notes. ^.^

  • lol.

well, i'm the first chair trombonist/part time guitarist.

weird how that works out, eh?

    xD

and actually, i would get a kick out of the only girl in the jazz band being in the rhythm section.

but it would make our band less interesting.

since 100% of the band is perverted.

even one of the new band directors cracks a joke every now and then.

and the main band director just laughs. :P

  • Trust me, 100% of our band, including the director, and I gotta say, myself, is perverted. And violent.

And I play the alto sax in the lower Jazz band.... I'm first chair, and I've only been playing for three months. I guess it's easier since I play clarinet.

Yeah, it *is* weird how things work out. I started out playing the cello!

  • oh, i'm first chair baritone too.

just thought i'd add that. lol.

and i started playing baritone at the beginning of contest season, so that would be February.

    :)

  • Hah. That's awesome. We only have one baritone player.... he would be first trombone, if he wasn't the baritone. I, personally, SUCK at brass instruments. My mouth simply does not want to "buzz" or whatever.

Yay for playing multiple instruments! XD

  • lol.

i've never tried woodwind, because the fingerings intimidate me. lmao.

but my little sister is going on alto next year, and i'm going to learn the same time as her. lol.

    but hey, we're all awesome.

    xD

  • Hah. For me, brass is hard because of the *lack* of fingerings. It's mind boggling to me how you can CONTROL which note you're playing without moving your fingers.

Good luck on alto! For me alto was really easy to pick up..... just remember to put a lot of air into it! That's everyone's problem in my band(minus the trumpets, they're always full of hot air anyway.)

  • lol.

air wont be a problem for me; i just bought a bass trombone two days ago. lol.

and actually, i dont see how anyone can't play a trombone. you can pretty much do anything, and really, if you're sharp pull out, and if your flat pull in.

you pretty much have the tuning slide in your hand. :)

  • As I said, though, I can't get much sound out of brass because I can't "buzz" or whatever. Just can't....

I have never seen a bass trombone up close. How's it different?

  • lol.

it happens; i know some people who just can't.

and well, it has alot more tubing, so that requires more air, it has a bigger horn, so again more air, and bigger sound. :D

and the mouthpiece is about the size of a tuba mouthpiece, so its alot harder playing higher.

--i'm still first trombone, so the first day i played my part, i was dieing. xD but since, i have gotten used to it.

  • lol.

i can never play trumpet without getting pressure headaches. because i take too big breaths for the trumpet, and the air just backs up into my head giving me a headache. :P

  • Comment removed

  • i can do it on my bass trombone, and on the trumpet, but those headaches get the best of me. :P

and i've been playing for 3 years also. :P

  • Comment removed

  • well, remember, i have a habit of blowing more air because of the fact that i play bass trombone.

  • ooh yeah, forgot..lol..damn it, i need a Soprano Sax!!!!im making a weather report tribute band.....Trombone is fun but just not for me, how do you guys do it with that huge ass mouth piece?

  • you haven't seen a tuba mouthpiece obviously.

    lol.

tuba mouthpieces are wayy bigger than trombone ones.

  • i know, there f*****g huge, how does any do that!!!!

  • i can.

    lol.

it just takes alot more air.

    :P

  • never got a headache even once. You shouldn't be forcing any air in that direction.

  • Then take smaller breaths ;).

  • rofl.

not possible once you play bass trombone.

    haha.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG...

    Played it too

    trumpet xD

  • Who is Maynards lead trumpet in the vid?

  • i wouldn't be surprised if it was Wayne Bergeron...

  • u want saxophone?

  • such a great song, i started learning trumpet with those great songs.

  • nice range wish im getting there on euphy =p

  • go fuck yourself. Maynard might have had some weight behind him but he's still one of the best jazz trumpeters EVER.

  • Al Hirt had weight, but that didn't stop him from beasting Green Hornet. Hansenshi you're an idiot :D

  • ORINGINAL ALWAYS BETTER>!!!!

  • its still birdland

  • THeres 2 versions of Maynard playing Birdland right? Theyre both awesome.

  • That age and still screaming in the best tone ever.. gosh only he can do such wonders. Maynard is my favorite trumpeter ever.. rip, hes in a better place. we all know it.

  • This rox

    By:Courckscrew

  • Of all the songs we played in high school jazz band, this was my favorite.

  • we played that too!!!:D

  • mannn,I wish we played that. lucky

  • I did too! I love the drumset part!

  • Not only could Maynard scream, but dang those trumpets in his section were amazing as well

  • R.I.P. Maynard.

  • when i hear something amazing in music i start to laugh and i was laughing the whole time and it felt like i was there with them. This performance is awesome.

  • maynards solo was sweet

  • he looks like he is a really nice and cool guy

  • ha, i played with him 2 times before he passed away when i was in high school.. it was amazing this and rocky just words can not explain

  • fuck you man. so much unwarranted disrepect.

  • Hey, punk back off. Be cool Don't make me disrespect your face!

  • TROMBONE RULZ IN THIS AND ALL SONGS!

  • you are a failure in life it's all about the trumpets. a jazz band can only go as far as its trumpets can take it

  • Aye.

    I should know.

I play trumpet in Jazz Band, and every clinician we've seen has told the trumpets to make sure to lead, not follow.

  • is that so your talking to a leader who has his sax's bringin' the cash in this pocket

  • Im playing this on first Trumpet this song is beast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm playing Second on this song, and it's awesome :D

  • im in band

    i play alto saxophone

and we are doing this song and i like it

    and it sounds really good..

and i also like the trumpet sound..

    its exciting!!

  • dude maynard's voice in here sounds like death, he so life-less in here, like normally he's like dancin around the stage. thats why I use to love to watch videos of him. but he's still doin what he loved, and makin it sound good...

  • i play saxophone, but this video is amazing!

    enjoy the squealing.

    awesome musician!!!

  • thats a trombone and trumpet!

  • um, i know that......

im a 4th year band student, and i understand the sounds of the different instruments.

okay? i said i AM a saxophone player and i enjoy the sound of the trumpets, if that's allright with you

  • its not alright

    !!!

  • It has been said that he lost his touch in his later years. I don't sense that here. Great job MF!!! Miss you much.

  • i guess they mean he let himself go and resorted to squeeling now and then. He's incredible at what he does though lol

  • Sweetie, the man was getting on in years and not in good health. None of us can be 30 or 40 forever! He gave it his best shot and it was a damn good one considering his circumstances.

  • LOL-"sweetie".i'm gonna be young for a long time haha. not that i want to live for ever.that'd be dull

  • And ugly too!! :)

  • me or him?haha....he's really good and knows loads about harmony but whenever he plays birdland all he seems to do is screech!

  • Make that past tense, he passed away last August and is now "screeching" with a big band in another world.

Aw, I wouldn't call you ugly - yet!

  • thats sad hes good

  • Interesting arangment. Really cool. Love the screamin'

  • the year? great,maynard!

  • he is the best jazz band that i've ever heard play birdland

  • my high school jazz band is playing this. i play the trumpet, and jeeeez, that is some ridiculous trumpet playing in that clip.

  • my band played this is jazz (yes i got 1st ) was pretty awsome

  • My school is playing Birdland for our homecoming halftime show. Its awesome. I play trombone, first chair. Oh yeah.

  • I want that trombone part!!!I play trombone

    :D

  • O hey 1121332, i can ask my friend for the trombone part. It is the same as the same as the Barry Saxaphone part, but transposed in a different key. i am pretty sure its 1 octave above the Barry Part

  • anyone have the trombone part??

    I need it bad!

  • birdlands a phuckin awesome song

i have the alto sax part :D

  • Is he Maynard? I saw him about ten years ago in Pori Jazz festival....

  • wow.. that was awesome.. his band is incredible

  • I saw Maynard twice (and met him twice too). Of course he is the man, but my the time I got to see him, he was too old to play an entire concert. His band was amazing though...lead trumpet was crazy.

  • R.I.P

    Maynard ferguson

    absolutely a treasure to watch

  • Now that's what i call a SCREAMIN' trumpet! I love Maynard he's FABULOUS!

  • badass

  • if you guys have seen the Big Band version of Birdland its a little better. if not you all are missin out.

  • the trombonist was very good

  • I was more impressed with the lead backup trumpet on this chart; Great accuracy and control.

  • I agree, the lead trumpet player is spectacular. That trombonist was also good.

  • very good song

  • i saw maynard live 3 times within the past 5yrs

he came to my high school

  • o my gosh! dude! hes awesome at trumpet! i play trumpet in my jazz band at school and we play birdland arranged my sumthin zawinful. its pretty good but cannot be compared to thisngs like he played.

  • can't say i like it much - the arrangement i mean

but wow, the trumpet is awesome

  • i love maynard. hes the reason i started playing trumpet, my main instruments trombone though. trumpet hurts my throat when i play high notes. i wish i could have seen maynard live

  • maynard was an amazing trumpet player, but his later performances just were not as good as his ones when he was younger.

  • It's a shame that his health fell the way that it did...his earlier recordings were ridiculous.

As far as the rhythm section, I'm going to assume that they don't play a lot of this sort of music, though the lead did do pretty well.

    OAS AAS LLS

  • nah. i only like jaco's version. in the key of B opening the song on bass. sounds sharper in opening B. But good none the less

  • Obviously you guys don't know who Maynard Ferguson is. He is one of the BEST trumpet players EVER! He is a legend and we all miss him very much. I don't play trumpet either and this sounds AMAZING! I want one of you guys to try and pick up a trumpet and play a DECENT not let alone and AMAZING hig note like he does. RIP Maynard

  • Is it just me or at 1:35 does the trombone soloist all of a sudden switch to tenor saxophone?

  • it does. i rekon it was 2 vids joined

  • Most of this is heresy. . . I don't even play trumpet and I know how good that is. . . Maynard had incredible range (duh) but just listen to his rhythym. . . he's good.

I played Birdland in high school (I play bass) and that solo section is just a groove-breaker as it is. . . Gaara is right. . .

  • What is your problems? I would kill to play trumpet that well :p you just don't know music.

  • Thats pretty cool 4 stars

  • I like the school band edition, This version is too busy. Cant tell whats happening

  • you guys were dicks to him and now hes dead. good job. fuckers!

  • RIP Maynard

  • this sucks (no offense) the fat guy cant pick his hand up fir more than 10seconds

  • Jaco is rolling over in his grave. Joe Zawinul would shit himself if he saw this. Maynard sounds like a duck being beaten to death with a baseball bat.

  • Thats the worst version of Birdland I've seen. =( Where's the bass harmonics. . .?

  • Now thats going to far....

  • I just mean the bass is not as good as what Jaco did. Sorry if I went too far.

  • Maynard's just lost it. There's nothing left. What a disappointment :\

  • A bit of a fatty. Too fat to stand up in fact.

  • damn...he's huge

  • i've seen bigger
