Discovered Janelle Monae from fun.'s "We Are Young." I think I'm in love. Seriously, goosebumps. I have them. This song and she and her brain and her soul and her music are all so beautiful.
I think it's amazing that she crafted a whole fantasy world and uses music as her choice of medium to convey it. There's a whole story behind Metropolis, Cindy Mayweather, Anthony Greendown, the Droid Control, etc. that she expresses through her songs; but what's even more amazing is that they still hold a sense of relevancy, even out of the proposed context. As cliche as it sounds, all of her songs have an apparent message that can apply to everyone in our day to day lives.
The reason so few people have heard of Janelle compared to the big names is because there are so few people who want something more than a quick, cheap thrill with their music. We, her fans, are among those who actually want something deeper in our music, and indeed, she delivers.
Not only that, but Janelle actually brings old styles BACK TO LIFE with stuff like BaBopByeYa, and gives them a new twist! Truly characteristic of the retro-futuristic style of Metropolis.
@Sparx1 And just for the record, I'm not saying mainstream pop is /BAD/, it's just that I think most Indie and lesser-known artists tend to have the most talent, that's all.
@Sparx1 well said, and i very much agree, i think after hearing Janelle Monae its completely changed me because of how true to her music she is and how talented and amazing she is. Ive been listening to it for the past year like everyday and shes so inspirational.
It's a damn shame. It sounds like there was so much effort put into this music and it just sits in the shadows of these garbage pop acts. Smh, the fuck's wrong with the world man?
If you think about it, although you may think this isn't popular, it is. Compare this to the millions of other artists out there who have no label or recognition. While she may not be as big as Lady gaga, Beyonce, etc, that doesn't deny that she has talent or people don't know of her. Seriously though, would you want her to be as big as GaGa?
@TKDmidgit I would want her to be recognized for her talent unlike Gaga who's recognized for her style rather than her talent, but I see what you mean.
Is it me or does she remind you of a female Andre 3000? Unbelievable how this does not have more views....music is raw and filled with so much emotion
My new life mission is tho help her succed! Im bout to put her name on my back, next to my plight, and my people, and ride it to he sun!! I'll sing her praises from the highest mountaintop!! Even if you dont like her music, you cant deny that she is an enigmatic character!! You cant help but be intriuged. You need more!! She is life!!!
Why is it that the most profound songs by the most talented mainstream artists are the least noticed??? Oh, for any jazz heads out there, the song title is a play on jazz pianist Thelonious Monk's tune titled, "Bye Ya", also another great tune worth looking at.
Janelle is clearly on another level compared to other artists. This is a music high. (And no, I'm not implying getting high while listening to it.) Janelle Monae is refreshing. Her entire album INSPIRES. So much musical influences that it blows your mind..its like she's taking everything she loves about music and creating a musical and lyrical journey. I love it!
Okay she wins I am truly a fan now....Her genius and ability to weave a tale of mystery while still have so many influences behind the beat is amazing! I only know one or two other Artists that can do that......Just guess.
Incredible song that combines several different genres. No mainstream artist is making music like this. Such a shame that such a great talent like Janelle is so underrated.
@Keezie27 because she is a true artist and singer with actual talent, and the powers that be or the higher ups behind the desks can't manipulate her or change her,
Because only brilliant minds gravitate to brilliant music. And brilliant minds do not make up the majority of young people, most of whom have been dumbed down by the music industry in the form of hacks such as Nikki MiNOT and Lady Gag-reflex..
If I become valedictorian after graduating from college, at the end of my speech, I'm SO gonna say "I see beyond tomorrow, of this life of strife and sorrow, my freedom calls and I must go!"
I'd listen to Janelle over Nicki Minaj any day! Janelle does music with talent and class! I don't know WHAT the hell Nicki does with music other than showing off her inflated ass and hopping all day.
This level of style would not play on your standard radio channel. I ceased listening to radio many years ago when I realized that most of the music that I actually enjoyed would never make it onto pop-culture radio-waves. This is dynamic music; eloquent in the truest sense of musical talent. Enjoy it for your very lives... it embodies the true nature of 'epic' and depicts nothing less than that.
@5104560711 No, race has no part it in. It's the fact that 1) she hasn't gained much popularity (you don't see people getting airplay with their first song ever made) and 2) her type of music isn't popular right now. Though I wish this type of jazzy pop was popular, it isn't. Radios don't play songs people don't really know of by artists that aren't really popular.
@SnivelyTheGlamful I cn find so many flaws n ur argument.. buuuut it is bc shes black, its a new day, new ppl, same system doe boo, we're just more hi tek n advance with it. the ppl running the world right now r nothing, but the great n grandchildren of those who profited off the slave trade; except for now its the prison industrial complex... not trying to b negative n I wont preach, just tryna give u a little game, its still real. peace snively. ; )

@5104560711 I disagree. I believe she does not get more recognition because the intellectual are very few, and Janelle's genius masterpieces are not fully understood by the mediocre masses, which are the vast majority. I am glad that despite the distractions of the general media craze, I was able to discover this revolutionary of music artistry.
I did not like this song at the start like the other songs, it had to grow on me. But now, it's one of my favorites...to hell with it, I love all of her songs. To those who think that she can not sing, this is the song that shows this woman's range. Listen and be overwhelmed.
I wish she wasn't sooo underrated... Excuse Esperanza Imma let you finish, but Janelle Monae is the best new artist of all time!! lol Don't get me wrong I love Both of the artist alot.. I'm glad that they both got recognition.
@ZPencILZ Not many people could pull this off. Aside from Janelle, Bjork is one of the masters in orchestral arrangements, and also the other new girl at the grammys Ezperanza Spalding.
@RaijimitsuSama101 the only reason you think that is probably that it's orchestral and uses the blues scale. most orchestral pieces don't, so when they do people tend to immediately think James Bond or at least some sort of spy-related theme, as most spy movies use orchestral pieces that make use of the blues scale.
@RaijimitsuSama101 And believe me... as her opening number in her 'Wondaland' concert... it sure even LOOKS like one! :) It's perfect for the next James Bond movie :)
"Babopbyeya" or the classiest way to end one of the best (if not the best) album of 2010. Thanks Janelle for pushing Music forward and taking it to a whole new level :)
Just finished listening to the whole album. Thanks for posting the whole album @soulfulbohemian I will definately be buying this album in the near future!
