On your way you discover more about the characters, the world, and the calamity. They even include well paced backstory for characters in optional dream sequences. Good review, but I'm still quite confused on some of your points.
Haha, I like how you blast other reviewers at the end for blowing their load all over internet for this game. I have to agree, whenever an indie game comes out that's good they bust a nut. I thought Braid sucked.
the controls for the PC were terrible: I found it very hard to stay on the platform when there were narrow paths... but that's really the only complaint I have.

While it's true that most video games are developing better and better quality soundtracks, there are still many games out there with a large music budget where the soundtrack still left a lot to be desired. Wow, excellent review man. I remember seeing this game in an interview a while ago when it was on development, and I thought that it looks great at the moment. Then I forget about it and now it caught me by surprise because is released.
I know people will find this weird but what kept me from buying this game is that you actually meet the narrator. Such a great voice acting completely ruined... Everything was perfect before I met this uncharismatic old moustache guy. The demo ended here, and it had better because I was totally put off.
I usually don't care about music in games as it is just some generic noise, but the song used in this game was outstanding, I couldn't believe how good it was.
Jaw-droppingly awesome soundtrack, rewards for above average skill (xp, narrator remarks) and even chances to increase the game's difficulty as much as you like right up to nigh-impossible levels (again, rewarding xp for skill). On top of that, the narrator is amazing, the combat feels fluid and very satisfying and as you progress between levels, you slowly get the feel that you're not so much killing and gaining levels but rebuilding this world. I strongly recommend this title.
6-8 if you run through blindly, I completed all the challenges and did the end scene twice (for the dual ending) and got about 10 hours out of it..... .more than enough for 12€
Good review, but I have to say, for the first time I felt you kinda missed the point a bit.
The "statues" weren't statues, they were the actual people frozen by the calamity. Also, the story is one of the main draws for the game. I found the story very good and if anything, a little simple. I don't really understand how you got confused.
To me, this represents one of the few examples of seamless integration of story and gameplay. That's why I love it.
Personally for me the story was the saddest thing i've ever seen. During the ending I even wept a single tear, first time i've ever done so because of a video game. The plot was amazing to say the least, everything was so symbolic, and had a deeper meaning that was so clever in it's design.
This is absolutely one of the best indie games ever made, and a shining example of what indie games can do!
But in all honesty I cannot fathom why you wouldn't cry ever a llittle. To me the ending was very very sad, and i sat a good 30 minutes thinking about the game and which ending I should chose before picking one. I had a hard time picking between the more selfish ending where you reset the world. And the ending where you live on after the calamity having learned from the past mistakes.
I think you should give this game another go, to see what you missed.
@ZeitgeistReview That is also the good ending in my eyes. The other ending is incredibly selfish It effectively creates a loop where the calamity happens once again, or not we don't know. Where all people live on, but you chose to reset your life because you couldn't handle the harsh world of the calamity.
While the other "good ending" in my eyes is the more unselfish option, where you live on having learned from the mistakes of the past. I also chose this ending after 30 mins of speculation.
"The gameplay and presentation are so fun and beautiful that I just forgot that there was a story in the first place." ... I had little respect for your reviews already but ignoring the story in a story driven game? I find it would be difficult for a person to use your reviews as a guide to selecting and purchasing games for your blatant disregard for spoilers. You do not warn against or hide vital story elements being revealed. I suggest reviewing your style of reviews.
About the thing that will annoy me in this game though is the narrator talking but the sound of his voice. Can developers please discard of "gravel voice" please.
As someone who started gaming in about 1980, I stopped in about 2005 because the saturation point of absolute shit via the FPS market killed it for me. BUT this game I will buy and try out ;)
Surprisingly this game was written and directed by Greg Kasavin, the best reviewer (former) from Gamespot.com. I really want to play it, but since I dont have a 360, and my PC sucks (though it could probably run this), I can't really play it.

Good review man! Sounds like a fair assessment of the title. I agree, 6-8 hours IS short for a game. I think the only other game I've played with that amount would be Magicka, which was a really fun game though :)
I got to check this out over at a friend's. He also mentioned it was short but for the price I think you get a your money worth. Sound is great and art style is subjective but definitely colorful and vibrant. I watched him play for about 30min and the narrator's voice was getting really annoying. That's pretty much my only complaint. Would I buy it? No, because I spent my money on something else. Would I recommend it on top of Zeit? YES.
Great game, haven't beat it yet, but it's a good review. I wish you talked a bit more about the narrator, as I feel it is a PERFECT way to tell this story. Other methods like dialogs of text or cutscenes... i don't feel they'd fit the isometric view and artstyle of the game.
2:30 you actually spoiled a great deal of the shock you get from that song combined with the setting of that level. The soundtrack is just perfect, I bought it from Steam the second I droped my controller to give myself a break from playing.
Well I'm glad that your not freaking out about it, I mean it's great when small studios like Supergiant and Frozenbyte come out with something extremely awesome like Bastion or Trine, but people who put them up as omgbestgamevars are kind of pushing it. Ever since seeing ForceStrategy vid on bastion, always thought it looked good. Kinda a different take on a dungeon crawler, though it'd be hard to categorize as such. 2-thumbs up for the Game+ once you beat it, one of the few things I don't like about Deus Ex:HR, having to restart without your hard-earned stuff :/
@ACrum615 simply saying that there are some games that have shorter stories and no, 6-8 hours isnt much compared to the full run through of deus ex: HR pushing 60 hours or sinking countless hours into fallout and the original deus ex.

I absolutely love bastion. Its storyline really kept me playing, and the gameplay was just fantastic. My favorite weapon is the Scrap Musket, and for the other, I either use the war Machete or the dual pistols. Yes im Blowing my load here.

I found the story to be fantastic, just because it blended with the gameplay and wasn't stretched out enough to get boring.
Also, it kept me interested more than enough to keep playing. Unlike most games, this one had a mighty fiiiine story ;)

Personally for me the story was the saddest thing i've ever seen. During the ending I even wept a single tear, first time i've ever done so because of a video game. The plot was amazing to say the least, everything was so symbolic, and had a deeper meaning that was so clever in it's design.
This is absolutely one of the best indie games ever made, and a shining example of what indie games can do!

But in all honesty I cannot fathom why you wouldn't cry ever a llittle. To me the ending was very very sad, and i sat a good 30 minutes thinking about the game and which ending I should chose before picking one. I had a hard time picking between the more selfish ending where you reset the world. And the ending where you live on after the calamity having learned from the past mistakes.
I think you should give this game another go, to see what you missed.

@ZeitgeistReview That is also the good ending in my eyes. The other ending is incredibly selfish It effectively creates a loop where the calamity happens once again, or not we don't know. Where all people live on, but you chose to reset your life because you couldn't handle the harsh world of the calamity.
While the other "good ending" in my eyes is the more unselfish option, where you live on having learned from the mistakes of the past. I also chose this ending after 30 mins of speculation.

I had little respect for your reviews already but ignoring the story in a story driven game? I find it would be difficult for a person to use your reviews as a guide to selecting and purchasing games for your blatant disregard for spoilers. You do not warn against or hide vital story elements being revealed. I suggest reviewing your style of reviews.

About the thing that will annoy me in this game though is the narrator talking but the sound of his voice. Can developers please discard of "gravel voice" please.

As someone who started gaming in about 1980, I stopped in about 2005 because the saturation point of absolute shit via the FPS market killed it for me. BUT this game I will buy and try out ;)

Surprisingly this game was written and directed by Greg Kasavin, the best reviewer (former) from Gamespot.com. I really want to play it, but since I dont have a 360, and my PC sucks (though it could probably run this), I can't really play it.

Good review man! Sounds like a fair assessment of the title. I agree, 6-8 hours IS short for a game. I think the only other game I've played with that amount would be Magicka, which was a really fun game though :)

I got to check this out over at a friend's. He also mentioned it was short but for the price I think you get a your money worth. Sound is great and art style is subjective but definitely colorful and vibrant. I watched him play for about 30min and the narrator's voice was getting really annoying. That's pretty much my only complaint. Would I buy it? No, because I spent my money on something else. Would I recommend it on top of Zeit? YES.

Great game, haven't beat it yet, but it's a good review. I wish you talked a bit more about the narrator, as I feel it is a PERFECT way to tell this story. Other methods like dialogs of text or cutscenes... i don't feel they'd fit the isometric view and artstyle of the game.

2:30 you actually spoiled a great deal of the shock you get from that song combined with the setting of that level. The soundtrack is just perfect, I bought it from Steam the second I droped my controller to give myself a break from playing.
Nevertheless, good review!

Well I'm glad that your not freaking out about it, I mean it's great when small studios like Supergiant and Frozenbyte come out with something extremely awesome like Bastion or Trine, but people who put them up as omgbestgamevars are kind of pushing it. I mean Trine is one of the best puzzleplats I've played, doesn't mean it's best game ever. :) Good Review ZGR :D

Ever since seeing ForceStrategy vid on bastion, always thought it looked good. Kinda a different take on a dungeon crawler, though it'd be hard to categorize as such. 2-thumbs up for the Game+ once you beat it, one of the few things I don't like about Deus Ex:HR, having to restart without your hard-earned stuff :/

@ACrum615 simply saying that there are some games that have shorter stories and no, 6-8 hours isnt much compared to the full run through of deus ex: HR pushing 60 hours or sinking countless hours into fallout and the original deus ex.

@ZeitgeistReview Calling it a short game isn't fair because it only costs $15 bucks. That's the same gameplay-to-dollar ratio as a $60 dollar game that's 30 hours long. Would you call that game short?

I absolutely love bastion. Its storyline really kept me playing, and the gameplay was just fantastic. My favorite weapon is the Scrap Musket, and for the other, I either use the war Machete or the dual pistols. Yes im Blowing my load here.
