That's a good dog. German shepherds are so freakin' smart...I have an 8-month-old GSD and he already knows sit, lay down, sit up, speak, shake hands, kiss, another kiss, "give me a hug," hi-five, roll over, heel, he retrieves perfectly on land and water, he tracks people when told to (he thinks it's a game), and he recognizes various other words and phrases that if uttered in his presence evoke intense staring and very enthusiastic tail wagging lol. They are my favorite breed for a reason

Are you using puppy pads at all? If you are, I recommend not using them. Because while it teaches your dog that it has a spot in the house that it's okay to eliminate on, it also teaches them that it's okay to go in the house. Take your pup out every hour on the hour. Follow it around until it does it's business. Then when it does, praise it like hell! Make your neighbors think you're insane with high pitched, "GOOD BOY! GOOD GIRL! That's a GOOD go potty outside!".
Also, if your pup likes treats, keep some treats in your pocket. When the dog goes outside, give it one. It'll learn that going outside is rewarded, whereas going inside is not. :) Hope this helps!
Thing is, my parents don't want me to keep her inside because they can't cope with the mess and smell it makes. I have to let it sleep outside as a puppy, which is really freaking horrible.
I regret buying her now given these conditions.
I bought her a 36" crate and a bed so its more comfortable, and so that I can potty train it better. The problem I have right now is that it just poos anywhere it wants in the yard. How can I confine its poop to a single area?
You could try moving it's poo to another location. Our male GSD will poo over by bushes and trees instead of the middle of the yard. Once it smells it's own smell over near that area, it will probably learn to go over there instead of going everywhere else! Or you can try taking your pup over to the area you want it to poo in and confine it there until it does it's thing. If they walk off and start to go somewhere else, pick them up and move them back to the area you want it to go in.
i like your idea of "discipline" my dog can do the same trick but looks at me with puppy eyes so she can eat it faster. discipline seems more effective than "tsss"ing
How do you get him to hold still in the first place? My shepherd is good at not eating things placed before him but I can't get him to hold still long enough to balance things on his nose.
Got a 6 month old GSD, and WOW, they are so smart, I feel like I am running out of tricks to teach him. You remind me of my wife and I, you guys sound just like us when praising your dog.
Awesome job training him! My GSD does everything except the "discipline" trick with the treat on her nose. She wants to look at it and drops it... holding her head still is not a strong point of hers and she hates when someone else holds her head. We're still working on it though. Just a matter of time. :)
Damn! that's tight. I have a german shepard and I soo want to get him disciplined and trained to do tricks like that. I know the key to it though is to spend as much time with him as I can.
so how did you train him to do the last trick, the one with the treet on his nose? My shepherd just wont calm down or stay still. He's very smart and can do several other tricks, but he can't seem to learn that one. And roll over. whenever I try to teach him that he just uses his feet to propel him across the floor lol
0:31 i can already taste it.!! lol.

Thanks for the suggestion. I like the confinement idea, but as a 2 month old puppy, it still whines a lot as when I put her away from me.
I'll give it a try though.

It's "Kommissar Rex".
In English it's "Inspector Rex".
In Portuguese it's "Rex, o Cão-Polícia" (Rex, the Police-Dog), but you already know that! ;-)
Cheers!
