The answer with riyaz (practice) is a little every day goes a long way. & you must remember to cut out the unnecessary stuff & stick to Kaida/Rela/nice tal/Tehais/Chakradars there's a lot of compositions one will never practically use so dont waste time on them. better to play a little variety very well than a lot not so well. Good Luck
Thanx its always nice to be appreciated especially by people who know what good tabla is & there is a lot of it in this World I can only voice myself for what its is worth.
Thanx 4 ur comments. yes is the answer. If u mean the RH I am playing Dhinu Gena bol (NOT TRKT !) which is played between Gab and kinar (edge) If u mean the LH then i play it Shampta Prasad benares style with the gab at the back of Bayan.
It would be a task to do that. Dhi is played as normal but nu is played (with finger 2nd to the right on right hand ( If Right handed dayan player ! ) )on the sur of tabla opposite the tin/tun its like a rest stroke so that you can play Dhinu Genu ( Spoken Dhina Gena) very fast called kaida rela & thats my good deed for 2day. There are books videos on tabla but most dont want you to know !
How traditionally self-prioritized of europeans...You should look at the world in its whole ratio... it's more like "Western" music needs MORE Indians in it.
I think your reply to smartgerman123 is a bit harsh. There are plenty of Indians (now europeans) who are in western music, in fact loads of them, it was a simple comment & should not be taken so politically. If you had nothing to say regarding the music you should have sent a private message. x B
Thanks gurujio its always uplifting to be appreciated especially as tabla requires hours of lonliness in Riyaz which is hard to keep u Its also great when people post comments i can check out their favourites and see videos i wouldn't find otherwise.
I was wondering if I could get some advice from you. I'm about to start learning tablas but I live in Portugal and as you may know, this is a very small and we don't really have any tabla teachers nor sellers. So I'll buy the tablas at the UK and learn on my own. But that's just so expensive and there's always the tuning problem because I'll get no support around here. Would you suggest anything about it?
Secondly I wish there were some tabla players like you around here. You're an amazing player with your heart on it. I've been looking for someone like you in Portugal to get my 4AM project running live. I had no luck tho. Thank you for these videos, they're very inspiring.
You have a great khula baaj technique man. Awesome stuff. I agree with you about the Benaras bayans. I'm a great fan of the Mishra silsila in the Benares tabla tradition and many of the maestros from that silsila prefer the bayans that you use. You hit the point dead on about how most tabla players enhance their sound (mostly bass) by mics. Kumar Bose, Zakir Hussain to name a few.
Thanx for your compliments Asdube, I wouldn't go as far as Awesome but I do try and sound myself as opposed to some clone of a clone ( No offence 2 clones) I did hang out with Mahapurish Misra in the early 80's who was a Disciple of Anokhe lal and a very nice man. He lived in this lovely little corner apartment near Ali Akbars (Khan) Home and i was privileged to sit on stage with him at some amazing concerts.
Hi. I'm not quite sure what you mean by getting the best acoustic sound. I do know that very good quality heads are important especially on Dayan. I like Benares as they are good sound and robust. Tha bayan needs a nice skin from the goats belly for a pliable soft and clear sound. You can see pores in the skin. If its from the shoulder it doesn't have pores. A good clear sound with fingers ( over speed ) is important in practice.
Who are u you to judge ? I am not playing Teental as per normal which has many styles and techniques according to speed. Dont take this tabla lark so seriously . its only a hobby for me and see it as music instead of judging. You either like what someone has to say or not , but I only take advice from people who can play or know better & somehow I dont think thats you.
I have at least 6 different sounding baya's but i prefer this small Benares one for the power rock & Roll tabla style i desire, certainly dont want to sound like all the other clones. Thanks anyway
Dont forget most of the Tabla you hear is mic'd up and this really enhances the sound of both drums. I play acoustically for the real sound. Most Tabla players sound feeble without Mic's.
Amazing talent!

very good. It sounds more like house or fuzzy jazz. Indian music needs more western musicians

sorry, I accidentally pressed spam on the comment, I did not mean to, sorry.
It said "very crisp!"
I agree about the acoustic sound. How do you get the best acoustic sound for your tabla?
Awesome tabla solo, very original and fun!
