  • Great and amazing :-D !!! Congratulations !! Also Merry Christmas and Happy 2012 !

    Claudio

  • man this is amazing

  • I found the sheet music to this study and read along as he played. This guy is really, really good. Effortless control over a wide range. Very nice indeed.

  • What trumpet and mouthpiece do you use?

  • A 10 minute long song turned into a 2:22 minute song..... Wth

  • i just peed myself im a sophomore in high school and im learning to play this i just lost confidence and want to go back to 8th grade

  • BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  • @madbologna You get signed?!

  • Ahh, when did he breathe? I didn't even see any circular breathing taking place. Maybe he's got holes behind his ears.

  • @Nabokov50

    it's called breath control yo.

    he times his breaths

  • How fast was this? It seems above tempo.

  • @NYTXhockey2219 This sounds about right actually. You're supposed to just barely sneak in breaths where he does.

  • @Jaygenius Yeah, I played this to audition for Bluecoats and at the time and we played it slower it seemed. I don't really remember.

  • First of all, you performance is really fantastic. Total control. wow.

then... did you played in peter gabriel's cd ''scratch my back''?

  • @francescodeguidi Thanks for listening and for your comments. Yes I was on the Peter Gabriel Recording.

  • First of all, you performance is really fantastic. Total control. wow. then... did you played in peter gabriel's cd ''scratch my back''?

  • Are the alternate fingerings of the 3rd valve completely necessary at that tempo to replace 1-3 in the part just after the intro? I am practicing this piece and want to know what the easiest way would be.

  • @erinehart93 It depends on each person. For me i can't do 1 and 3 that fast, and since its so fast no one would notice it being out of tune if i do 3 instead.Do whatever is comfortable though.

  • Now do that in one breath

  • this is my all state audition solo....ahhh!

  • @70r7ay good luck

  • @iDeSeRtify thanks, im going to need it

  • 6 people play a woodwind instrument.

  • Que talento, realmente esses estudos do arban so de emocionar quando bem executado com neste caso. PARABENS

  • A class piece played by a class player.brilliant.

  • Holy Jeebus. Brilliant! This will be my goal for the end of the year...might take longer. O____O

  • If you take a look at my channel, you'll know that I'm by no means a trumpet player, but this is a funky looking trumpet. Can someone tell me what the difference is between this one and the other "regular" trumpets? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

  • @panamanian911 It's a cornet - it has a more conical bore than a Trumpet, and is used more in Brass Band music.

  • how long did you honestly practice this to get it down?

  • Now I know what I want to do for my curtis audition :) thank you for inspiring me

  • This is one the best recording I've heard of this study. BUT, did anybody else notice at 1:45 the video shows him taking a breath, but in the audio he seems to play through without breathing? He's a great player no doubt, but there's a lot of players out there that could produce a recording of this quality using edits. If I'm wrong and this is a truly 'live' performance, then good for him because it's almost impossible to perform this study flawlessly in a single take.

  • @KFtpt I think it's just the echo added by the computer. Sometimes guys will add a "Concert Hall" setting to their mix for a little vibrance to the sound. Could be wrong though, good catch!!

  • @KFtpt The audio isn't synced completely with the video. You can see that from his valves.

  • no lie...ive never heard an arban characteristic study sound that good. wow. period

  • 5 people are jealous that they can't play as good

  • Wow, I never knew it was this fast! Crud, I have a lot of work to do now! Amazing job btw!! It was amazing :)

  • effortless...wish I could play like that!

  • this is unbelievable...wow!

  • Comment removed

  • This simply never gets old to hear.

  • what mouthpiece do you use?

  • alguem sabe a mediada desse bocal queele esta usando e a marca?cara é muito bomm!!!!

  • arban would be proud of you (:

  • i could not play one measure of this as you do.

  • that was just fantastic.

  • Bravo,from Serbia.and of cours many regards.

  • That was crazy good!!

  • Great study. I'm playing this next week for part of my jury. Not quite at this tempo though. ;)

  • this is awesome..love this study under the arban!

  • love it, but boy is that discouraging.

  • Exceptional work, thanks

  • Has anyone recorded the accompaniments yet?

  • Excellent ! ! !

  • Nevermind. I found the pg.

  • Is this in Arbans book. If so what page?

  • @cristian111894 pg 285

  • Can anyone give me some tips on the trill for the C# in measure 5? He does his trill so gracefully, but I can hardly do the trill because when I try to take pressure off of the second valve, my first valve comes up as well. Are you supposed to use alternate fingerings?

  • @Mouserninja No, no special fingerings. Just 1 & 1-2, only lifting your middle finger. If you tried an alternate fingering (maybe 1-3 for that D), it would be horribly out of tune. Just keep working on it, play it half speed and slowly increase until you're far beyond the normal tempo, then when you play it normal speed it will feel easy. Also, he plays this a little quicker than tempo, so don't feel the need to match him unless you're able.

  • Brilhante!!! Queria poder tocar assim...

um dia a gente chega la...

  • I want to see this performed as well on Euphonium. ........... breaths required every 2 to 3 measures tops.

  • The 4 guys who don't like it are violonists.

  • @_@

  • What a beautiful tone! And so fluid too!

  • 'ESE HOMBRE TIENE UNA LECTURA MUY ESPECTACULAR

  • amazing.

  • Wow... absolutely brilliant!

  • is the cornet always in A or Bb

  • absolutely brillent this is GREAT MOTIVATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What model cornet is this?

  • @BassicallyChristian

    Hi there,

It looks very much like a pre 1987 Boosey and Hawkes Sovereign.

  • this is giving me the chills....

    so relaxed yet precise....

  • Is he honestly going half a page with one breath??? with years of breathing i can still only get 3-4 measures with a single breath!

  • My instructor has me playing this. I thought I could play it fast but I was so wrong. This guy is amazing!!

  • Being a cornet player I certainly know that is difficult! This was absolutely fantastic and you need quite good stamina to complete this without mistakes! I came close to applauding when watching this! What cornet is that by the way? :)

  • heh i tried paying this last year aaandd only got like 10 likes done outa the whole thing.. with cuts lol :( didnt do region last year. this year i am. where can i buy arbans book? or online? annnd what kinda mouth piece do you use? i never tried a different one other than the 1st, 5c and now 3c :/

  • @Arts0Music0Anime Arbans can be found in any music store really, or any music site. I got my for a good price form Amazon, about 30 bucks, which isnt bad for the book at all. And me myself, I can play parts of this, I guess like you, as well as Fantasie Brilliante (even though my triple tonguing isnt too good at all) and I play on a 5B it depends on your preferences, but my director moved me from a 7C to a 3C to 5B, and I used it for every ensemble and Honor Band I played it. Hope this helps!

  • Most excellent playing. Salute !!!

  • the people who disliked this video are obviously not musicians.

  • chingonsisimo

  • playing this for my university audition, hopefully i can sound that good.

not gonna happen lol. Amazing job dude

  • I literally applauded when this video ended

  • hi!!can you send me this score in a mail please?my e mail is bel_putel_93@hotmail.it ....thank you!

  • what model cornet is that and where can i find one

  • One of the best trumpet/cornet vids on youtube. Intonation is great, control, attacks, everything is there. This guy is an accomplished player!

  • Ha...definitely played this in high school. :-)

  • Does anyone know what kind of cornet this is?

  • VERY, VERY GOOD !!! your cornet has a very nice sound and you play Very Good this cornet. BRAVO from ARGENTINA

  • i'm so in love with it

  • thanks very much

  • thanks very much!!!

  • mooi Why are you not Famous ?

  • Very nice!!! Where i could buy this acompgnement for Arban studies

    Thanks to answer me!!!

    Congratulation from Spain

  • @vadurar The accompaniments are available from Brasswind publications.

  • this is SO much easier on cornet than trumpet

  • very goooody !!

  • He's using fast passages a lot.

  • Damn! this guy is good I love his way of playing the cornet. He rules!

  • THIS. IS. NUTS.

  • I never see him breath is ... is he circular breathing?

  • @TitanticFAIL

No. If you watch he breathes at the rests and designated breath marks like he's supposed to. This is actually how Arban intended the characteristic to be played.

  • I honestly listen to this everyday. I practice this song everyday. My goal is to sound like this. It motivates me every single day without fail.

  • wow ... amazing!

  • Does anyone have a link where I can buy the backing track?

  • This dude is the bomb!!!!! Wow. I'm a freshman in high school working on this and It's really hard.

  • God... this is absolutely fantastic. Great!!!!

  • How can I buy the piano part or audio accompaniment part ?

  • Nossa!!!!!! Que som incrível!!! é a primeira vez que escuto esse exercício tão bem tocado. Maravilhoso.

  • Another great performance Paul!

This was my audition piece for my high school band in 10th grade. I ate, drank, and slept this tune for 3 weeks! And I can play it by memory even after 30 years of not playing it...although not to the level you play it. Fantastic job! You've helped inspire me to pull out the ol' Arbans book again!

  • You need to play with an accompanist. you're musicality goes far beyond any recording dude. You are amazing at your horn, end of story. and a recording just... doesn't do you justice :P

  • 74,000 views and only 233 ratings... that's nearly 318 views per person... I think that's about right for me ;)

  • arban is the best!

  • Geez - I've been playing this for 20 years and have never got it to proper tempo without fudging. This guys is wonderful

  • spot on, good sir

  • Arban is the best,

I'm almost through his books, and i learned verry much of this.

  • I love this. Absolutely beautiful!

  • bravo!

  • you're the best

  • to tylcornelius:

I *think* there is a platinum edition of the arbans book The new Platinum Edition features: Comb binding for easier use.

Piano accompaniment CD for the Fantasies included in the book. Find it on amazon - it's silver in colour. I don't know if one of the songs is this song though.

  • @christinacary ok thank you very much!! :)

  • @christinacary Yeah youre right i own the platinum arbans book and it does in fact have piano accompaniment.

  • is there anywhere to download/buy this accompaniment track?

  • it comes with the latest version of the Arbans book

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!!

  • Very Nice!!!!!!!!!!!

  • so you can still play then dude? nice to hear you again Mr Mayes!

  • You got some chops my friend.

  • I can double and triple tongue pretty well staying on one note however I really struggle say doing a scale double tonging. keeping my tongue synchronized with my brain and my fingers. can anyone offer any help

  • @JimboJohnsy Hey, slow and steady is the key. I know everyone hates to hear that advice, I know I did. But until I heeded it I never got anywhere. There are some arban's excercises starting on page 77 that will help. If you slur them first then repeat and double tongue the same thing SLOWLY I bet you'll see some great results. The key with double tonguing is to keep the air flowing as if you were slurring. The tongue can't interrupt airflow that is not present. Hope that helps!!!

  • thanks I'll start practicing now

  • start slow then go faster using a metrenome,

  • practce it daliy; practice slowly, be always accurate and patient. play the first sound of the triplets with marcato, the other two legato. It should improve a lot in even two weeks. That`s all:)

  • Use a metronome...take things really slow at first and then build your way up. Really think of saying the tonguing vowels in your mouth while you are playing...

  • So perfect and inspiring~! Thank you the sharing.

  • superb respect a++++++++++++++++++++++

  • The ta and ka syllables were intended for cornet, which because of its shape sounds less articulate than the trumpet. In order to get the same level of articulation as a cornet on trumpet, you would use a softer articulation- doo and goo.

  • I agree with Ibanez3789 I used to double tounge with doo - goo really fast but could not gain much control, i changed to Ta Ka and i gained a lot more control. It depends on what YOU as a performer wants and needs to create a beautiful and full tone. Try different methods before sticking with one and you'll be right as rain!

  • Super:)))

  • You made me bend my knees ...

    I am ... flabbergasted!

Thanks ... For this incredible talent you seem to take great care.

    ;o))

  • I have to play this at 110. No fair when Paul Mayes gets to take it at like 95-100!

  • what...the..fack. Im thinking bout using this as my techinical for my highschool REaudition -_-

  • can somebody tell me how to double tongue

  • when youre playing you normally play as if you were sayng "t" if staccato"d" if marcatto in the trumpet

for double tongue you must "say" "t k" or "d g" if stacatto.

i dont know if i helped you. its kinda dificult to explain like this

  • I think you keep your em the same. Make your tou touch the roff of your mouth then put it down a little bit and back up. I THINK

  • use syllables "too" "koo"

  • NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! use "do" and "goo"

too and koo break up the air WAY to much and they make the notes sound really bad

  • From what i understand, doesn't Arban especially recommend the using of syllables "ta-ka"?

  • I use ti-ka. The "right" way to double tongue is what works for you, not what is written in a book.

  • am i wrong though? D and G tounging allows for tonality in each note and helps each note sound full rather then rushed

  • You're not wrong... But no trumpet method is necessarily "right." Either syllable would sound the same if practiced for long enough. I learned to double tongue one way, and I'm sure that if I'd learned another way, then it would still sound the same in the long run. Like I said, it's all about what works best for the individual players.

  • Fu**ing perfect!

    love it! great work

  • @everybody talking about the A natural Ab thing:

there's a natural sign underneath the turn symbol. that means play the turn to the natural instead of the key signature-implied flat note. Perhaps your version doesn't have it, but the Arban book printed in 2005 does have it.

  • @Timrunner07

I'm pretty sure you're mistaken. If there was a natural sign (and there isn't), it would be ON TOP of the turn. If it's on the bottom, that would be an F-natural. The B - turn does have a natural sign on the bottom.

You are talking about the FIRST turn right?

  • ok. i am looking at it right now. i was wrong that the natural was underneath it, but there is most definitely a natural in front of the A, and a natural in front of the B, a sharp sign underneath the first turn and a natural sign underneath the second turn. That is exactly how he plays it in this video. I know what a natural sign looks like, and my eyes do not deceive me. I'm looking at the 1982 copyright of the Arban book. You guys must be looking at a different transcription or something

  • you are correct, it is supposed to be an A natural for the turn, and that is how paul plays it in this recording. Also Will Strider, the trumpet professor at Tech, also explained that it was an A natural. Also for people looking at this due to all-region- in the second set of erratas released, it includes saying that the A is supposed to be a natural in the turn because reprinted versions do not have the natural sign. It is in the Arbans book itself though.

  • Well i'm a trombonist so I don't know a great deal about cornets. I do know, however, that this is a total bitch to play on trombone!

  • @elh666. lol from another trombonist.

  • @elh666 I know! I had to do this one in first year on Trombone. It was intense.

  • @elh666

I can imagine the second part with the intervals :O

  • @kareljuwet ikrrr!

  • @elh666 I know right. Dude I live in missouri and it's my senior all state etude in the arbans studys. It's gonna suck haha. I play trombone by the way =D

  • great!

im practising at the moment and its hard to reach the tempo in what it is meant to be.

its funny to use the 3, i never do it^^

  • i find it wierd that he switches between using 12 and 3 for his e's

  • The less pipe you have to go through, the easier the transition is on your lips. It's also easier to valve this fast.

  • ahh he didnt do the Ab's in the C minor section middle of the page haha nobody ever does but those accidentals carry through even to the turns.

    brilliant performance!

  • For my All-Region auditions they changed those to A naturals. Are they supposed to be Ab's?

  • Yes they are, in my region they kept the Ab's. But do whatever your region told you to do. But just for future reference, those are supposed to still be Ab.

  • i looked in my arban book because i didn't believe you and everything is definitely marked the way he plays it. maybe you are reading somebody else's arrangement?

  • @Timrunner07

No, vader is right. The key signature carries over to the turns (Ab). It's just that most people disregard the Key Signature.

  • wonderful. I love it. I have to play 1 of the first 3 studies for region and if i could sound like this i would be guaranteed first chair.

  • I have to learn this for my instructor. Does it have to be this fast?

  • Just play it at a speed were you can hit all the notes cleanly. If you cant play it at this speed and be succesful, then dont do it. The point of these excersises are to develope technique, so start off playing it slow. When you can get through it at least one time perfect, you can speed up the tempo. Real important to maintain a good classical tone as well.

  • you play so flawlesly and it looks as if it is effortless for you. WOW!!

  • You play so well. BRAVO!

  • flawless. This is my region etude.

  • how do you tongue so fast!!!!?? ( that sounded dirty..)

  • you mean double and tripple tounging. admittedly, I am not the best but with good practice it is not so difficult. pronounce ta ta ka repeatedly
