oh comon people... its 21st century, we can make wigs out of artificial materials. its like "shave your head so somebody else wont have to be bald" where is the logic in that? hair might grow back, but it took me about 4 years to grow it and i m 20 so that is like 1/5th of my life. and still there is a morron on every corner making jokes about cutting it. (i am a dude)
its fine if you dont want to donate your hair and you dont have to explain yourself to anyone...but why do you have imply hair donations are not as important as other donations... hair loss can really affect someones self steem so dont say that is not important too
i think that the assumption that hair loss is so bad that we need charities to harvest peoples hair and redistribute it to those without hair reinforces the idea that you must be ugly if you have no hair. It would be better to send the message to people that hair is just hair and you can still feel comfortable without it. Cancer and alopecia are not rare conditions- we should be trying to normalise hairlessness rather than masking it so that people dont feel they *need* a wig to feel comfortable
Very good points :) It's very nice that you raise awareness about the hair-companies. I'm a blood donor, and I'm also studying biology and chemistry, or more precisely: biotechnology, and interested in medicine :)
I mean if they are so offended and disgruntled by someone else not doing so.. they should have done it themselves then. But really.. have they? these are probably just trolls who take fun in saying anything to intimidate or make someone feel bad about something that really is nothing at all. I wouldn't at all take them seriously. And even if they are serious.. you have surely contributed more to humanity by contributing to the filed of science and actually researching cancer -
Here.. you are much too nice and ressiliant in this video. I would be completely out-raged if someone was trying to guilt trip or bully me into giving away a body part. Who in hell do they think they are? I really doubt they could give 2 flying shits about dying cancer patients.. if so ask them where is there charity contributions and why arn't they growing their hair out to give away?..
Whenever a disaster strikes, the Red Cross begs for blood. Even though, very little blood is given for disaster relief. Most of the donor blood is sold to hospitals; which makes the Red Cross $1.9 Billion a yr. While Locks of Love's, hair charity, makes only $1.9 million a yr selling hair. So in that sense donating blood is more exploitative. Look you don't have to justify not donating your hair. It's your hair. Just don't make it seem like donating blood is better than hair. It's all the same.
@archyteckie08 Thanks for your valuable input. I haven't donated to Red Cross; I donate to Canadian blood services. They allow blood donations every 2 months and as far as the online questionnaire goes, they don't turn away homosexuals. Although exploitation will be found everywhere, I do believe that donating blood IS better than hair, as blood will go toward saving a life or improving a patient's health and quality of life, as opposed to solely protecting their self-image.
@stewielove101 Oh goodness I made this video so long ago I don't remember (and I was also filming this at around 3am) but I've been wearing the Covergirl lip stain in Wild Berry Wink for a couple years. I don't like the feeling of lipstick.
I totally understand you... when I had long hair like yours I got a ton of crap about why I didnt donate it. I didnt want to hear it anymore so i looked into donating it and my hair wasnt even long enough. I was NOT about ready to have a pixie cut or a bob. no. so i cut it to my chest or where my tank tops end. like. the cleavage part. and i never got crap for it. (:
i have very long hair and almost every week i get people asking me if i am planning on donating my hair, and telling me how much the kids would love it. then they usually tell me how they cut it and donated it to whatever they donated it to. my mom also tells me how great it would be if i cut it and donated it. that's not my thing though. there are enough wigs out there, synthetic wigs are gorgeous, nobody needs my hair but me.
@juggalettetillidie2 Donated hair doesn't go to making wigs for non-cancer patients ... that hair comes from countries where they convince women that cutting off all of their hair is what God wants. Then they steal that hair and turn it into weave lol
After reading some of the comments that I have been left here, I think it's some people are not truly watching the video in it's entirety and some I think, perhaps aren't watching it all, just commenting on the title alone. It is a sad commentary on society that you would even feel the need to defend your decision, which you did very well, clearly and concisely verbally and in print. Kudos to you for your blood donations and lab research and for sharing this video.
@firestarterri I am someone who grew their hair out for donation and due to damage found out it was not acceptable for donation either way. It was very disappointing to me but I did not do as much as research as you obviously have into the donation process and I have been enlightened and saddened by the information you offered. I will continue to donate blood but I think perhaps I will not try again to grow my hair for donation so I thank you for the information. Best wishes to you.
i just donated my hair to cancer for a friend that past a way im under 18 and i would donate blood but i dont think your aloud to give blood if your under 18 with out a parent or a gardan so cutting off my hair is the only thing i could give to help out for the sake of my friend im not saying you should cut you hair i just dont see the point of keeping it that long i would not know what to do with it after it went past 28 inch long.
Wow, I find this so wrong. Why would people berate you so badly? I'm amazed at long hair; I would love to have long hair, however, I dye mine and have layers and fringe. I would donate blood, however, I cannot because I'm anemic. My mum has had cancer several times and she doesn't care about her appearance; only health. People need to realize this.
There is a logical break in the argumentation, if one say that you are a bad and immoral person, just because of the fact that you do not donate your hair. Everyone who says so, would have to grow his own hair for donating reasons. Moreover those people do not understand the difference between "yours" and "mine". To say it clear my hair is out of your business.
Speaking as one who has had an aunt pass from lung cancer, and a mother recovering from breast cancer, I don't agree with you. I understand that people should have the freedom to do what they want with their own hair..but 1) it's just hair, you can easily regrow the measly 15 inches. 2) think of how someone feels when people look at them funny because chemo took all their hair. 3) if you were recovering from cancer with a hairless head, wouldn't you wish someone had been so giving?
@brittb1983 I'm no stranger to cancer; I've had a grandmother and several aunts and one uncle pass away from cancer. They were much more concerned with recovering their health than their image. Only my grandmother owned a wig, and she often went without anyway. That's why I donate blood instead of hair; I'm able to donate blood every 3 months whereas I'd only be able to donate my hair every 2 years. Many cancer patients need sometimes up to 5 pints of blood after each chemotherapy session.
I appreciate all your research! I have elbow length hair & have never experienced the judgment you experience. I will definitely think twice about LoL when I do end up cutting my hair. Sounds like there's a much more deserving foundation/charity out there that won't make money off my donation. I keep thinking of all the people I know who 'brag' about donating to LoL. If they only researched, they'd realize how pretentious they come off by announcing their 'contributions'..not very humble at all.
wowow. well if i put a smile on a kids face im happy ^_^ im donating mine. to a smaller organization that i know for sure they are going to use my hair for a wig. good argument tho :D
As I said in a comment in one of your other videos: Kudos to you. You're doing what makes you happy and comfy. Plus, donating blood. I do that too, and I volunteer for the red cross.
People ask me when I am going to donate my hair (they never ask if I am going to... they always assume.) I reply, "Maybe I will when my hair is down to my knees.. Maybe not even then.." They look shocked that I'm not planning on doing it soon let alone hardly even considering it.
@hils22787 Thanks very much for your kind comments and your support. :) It really irks me when others try to make me feel guilty for keeping my hair; as if I don't deserve to keep a part of my own body. There are some people who get their hair trimmed at a salon every 6 weeks; do people berate them for getting regular trims instead of growing their hair long? Do girls get patronized for dying their hair instead of keeping it virgin? No, so why should we accept this harassment? We shouldn't.
@Catlover123445@Catlover123445 You have to be completely infection-free to donate blood. When having anal sex, there is a greater chance of getting a small infection. The people the blood is transferred to already have weakened immune systems. It's of course bad that gey people can't contribute with blood, but it's just another safety measure.
Absolute horse-shit. "gay people" assumes lesbians to be banned as well, right? Well, then that would defeat your "anal sex infection" argument. What about heterosexuals who engaged in "anal sex".. is it written somewhere that they must be banned too? Show me where it does. By assuming gay people must be diseased or have a higher risk of carrying infection makes you a bigot. There is an equal chance of a heterosexual person to be 'diseased;.
By refusing a good dose of blood from someone just because they are gay, even though they are perfectly healthy and have no history of disease, you are reducing the chance of someone else getting better and make good use of that blood just for your silly "safety measure". (red cross have a history of discrimination and homophobia) . And just to clarify if a person actually IS diseased then yes then they should NOT give blood.
You are selfish for downgrading people donating their hair to charity. Just because you dont have the generosity or courage to donate your own does not mean you should downplay and try to excuse yourself by downplaying organizations doing a hell of a lot more for these children than you are.
@sobomb101 As I said before, I never downgraded the donators. I actually noted that their hearts are in the right place. Everything I said in this video was said with honesty and no sarcasm. I spent 7 years in microbiology labs doing research related to understanding cancer better; just because I didn't find a cure, does that make me "selfish"?. Would you like to give 7 years of your life? Did you even have the patience to give 14 minutes to watch this video? Your comment sounds like you didn't.
@sobomb101 People like to throw around the word "selfish" to people they don't even know. What's wrong with people just letting their hair grow for their own interest? A lot of those women are talked down and treated like shit until they get their hair cut for LoL. I'm sorry, but it didn't sound like she was downgrading people who donate. She's talking about how the charity itself could be a scam because of what she heard.
I don't care who gets my donated hair, as long as it goes to make someone happy. it doesn't matter to me want diease they have. and im pretty locks of love needs all the money they can get to help the kids.
I totally agree, people can make more money from ppl being sick in this country than being healthy, I feel like companies have found that the word CANCER can be a big money maker....every time someone buys a pink bracelet for breast cancer how much of that really goes to cancer research?...
I'm sorry but this was crap. The picture is to see first hand what child needs the wig most. The recommendations are to see what child will deserve it.The written assignment from the child is to see who will appreciate it most. The financial records are to see which families can not afford it compared to the others.
And no one makes the decision to be "bald". They want the cancer treated and people like me give them my hair to make them feel better about their cancer treatment.
@HryPotrFreak Most of the time the children prefer caps or handkerchiefs, because wigs can be very itchy. Ever put on a wig on Halloween? It was probably annoying and made your scalp itch. Her point of this video is because she wants people to stop saying she's selfish, or other women with long hair selfish because they keep their hair long. It is very rude for people who don't know you to just tell you "cut your hair, or
@HryPotrFreak On every long hair video, there are always girls telling girls with hair longer than their breast to cut it off for Locks of Love, which has been known to be a scam. They might have changed, but they used to just throw away most of the ponytails or send them to extension companies. I just don't understand why people tell women with long hair to cut it off because "it's not in", or "they should donate it".
@CuteandCreepy123 Yes I've worn a Halloween wig, and it didn't bother me, even though I was 7.
And locks of love sells the hair that doesn't meet standard to pay for the wigs. How else will they get the money. Sure you've got a buttload of hair, but how will you make a wig? Send it to a wigmaker. That costs money they probably don't have. So by selling some of the hair you can make a wig w/ the rest. It still goes to the children.
@HryPotrFreak The vast majority of LoL wigs do not go to cancer patients, they go to alopecia patients. I'm tired of companies playing the "cancer" card to motivate donators who think their hair will go to a child who is sick; in reality most people with alopecia are entirely healthy. Also, LoL receives money from at least 3 different places: from selling their hair to other companies, by receiving monetary donations, and by subsidizing their wigs - most families still have to pay for the wigs.
I believe if you want to keep your long hair you should do so there is plenty of people in this world who donate their hair. it doesn't mean your a bad person to want to keep your hair. it your body you should do with it as you please. you didn't make a bad decision and aren't a bad person for wanting to keep your long hair.
as donating (anything) is a personal act of generosity, no one should be blamed not willing to be involved in the process, unless it is not donating bot being stolen under threat!
Advisers are not payers (of their person, missing feelings, and lost of self image, after all this is kind of amputation) !
And if you add these companies business not very clear...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's curious to me that you downgrade someone's donation of hair. Not donating your hair doesn't make you a bad person, downgrading those who do want to contribute does. It's one thing to defend yourself and your values, but another thing to devalue people who are sacrificing something intangible - self-image and perception of beauty - in order to provide help to those in need. It's a bigger cause than your small "contribution" of yammering on and on about how it's a worthless cause.
@beenie1229 There is never a point in this video where I downgrade donators. I DO downgrade the "non-profit" companies who exploit both the patients & the donators by throwing out hair, selling some to "offset costs" and then also subsidizing wigs to the patients. These are not rumors, these are facts stated on their own websites. As for my "small contribution of yammering on", I spent years in a lab contributing to cancer research and I also donate blood. Watch the whole video before you judge.
This video has been very informative. I have a friend who has considered donating her hair and I will share this with her. And if you want to keep you're hair there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. People who say you're selfish are probably people who would like to donate but can't because their hair isn't long enough ;)
I don't feel it's right to talk negatively about these organizations just because you feel defensive against those who think you should donate. If you choose to donate that's great, if not, its your decision. Don't let people get to you so far that you criticize others and belittle their contributions.
I understand your intent in this video, and do appreciate your effort to be polite about your opinion of these organizations.
i would donate some of it if i had your hair length but that's just me. i can see the years dedicated to actually growing and keeping your hair healthy would make someone not want to do it. i've always found long hair beautiful but its a great feeling when you get it shorter, your head feels so light :D
The majority of long haired women like us have a lot in common. I also will never donate my hair. My husband died of Leukemia when we were 22 yrs. I promised him I would never cut my hair. He's been gone 37 years & I still keep my hair to my knees, and never remarried either. I love my beautiful hair. I agree with all the info, the most important thing I continue to donate is blood/bone marrow. People, please give bone marrow.
i have hair that goes down to my waist, and it really feels bad when a stranger criticizes you for not donating your hair, my hair is a little thin so i try to brush people by saying its too thin, why am i selfish for enjoying long hair? i am rather attached to it(does that make me a bad person?)
( Continued ) Their thinking " well I may be jealous but who does she think she is with her hair being that long HOW DARE HER I need to take her down a peg or two and the " your selfish, you should donate it " mantra is a perfect way to do it , it has worked and has gotten a lot of people to cut their hair all for " a good cause " " They wouldn't even be jealous if their own selfishness wasn't coming to the surface in the first place . Jealously and selfishness go hand and hand .
( Continued ) Their the ones that are being selfish in the first place by suggesting for you to cut it just to donate it when these people really know that they could careless if you donated and all they're really trying to do is see if they can get you to CUT IT and the "donation " guilt trip is the perfect way to take the focus of their jealousy and make you feel like crap for having the audacity to have hair that long .
Omg . I in NO WAY think that you NOT donating your hair, makes you into a selfish person . AT ALL . It IS your hair why not enjoy it. The people that are telling you that you're selfish for NOT donating it are just being jerks because.... ready for it, here it comes... THEIR JEALOUS and they feel guilty for their jealousy at the same time so they try and elevate their guilt for feeling jealous by trying to make it like YOU'VE done something selfish .
Hello Lucy your hair is really absolutely marvellous and I understand that you will not give it, but me I want to buy them. I know that you hate the short hair and the haircutting but I however want to buy them without scissors. I am a wig maker and I am looking for long hair because here in France it is hard to find it. How could buy your hair if you will not cut it ? It is easy, you just have to save all your hair falling on your brush and your comb and put it in a box and then sell them.
Thank you for making this video. I also have very long hair, total strangers often come up to me and tell me I should cut it and donate it. It becomes annoying to have to explain that my hair is grey and dyed (therefore unacceptable for donation) and I already donate money and blood, I do not feel obliged to have to chop my hair off too.
i am so happy to see this video of you...i have the same problem at my channel...and some people get really nasty about it, unbelieveable! one has to have the right to grow out his/her hair without it to having to be to cut it off for donation! one can contribute to the world and the people in thousand other ways, so why don't leave us longhairs alone and do actually something yourself to help people, instead of commenting others!
I know plenty of grad students and even a few biologists. Rarely are they under 35 and as fluent about what they do, what they expose themselves to and how it affects themselves and/or society. So huge kudos to you Lucy!
...and to think, I just thought you had good advice for women who wanted to try waist training.
Ugh, this annoying hair bullying needs to stop. I don't even know why anyone would want somebody else's hair, that's just plain creepy. Just because you are pressuring someone to adhere to a "good cause", it doesn't make you a good person all of a sudden
I like your video. All of your appearance is very beautiful and I love it to see your hair long. About hair donation, I dislike it to celebrate the destruction of beautiful long hair. That's my point of view. Nothing to raise a global view. But I have some questions. Who knows the facts, where all this donated hair is going? How big is the rate of garbage? How much is sold out? Long Hair is a kind of natural beauty, for me it makes no sense to give it only a justification if it is sacrificed.
thats like calling someone selfish because they want to be more attractive, slim and sexy.
people are envious and dont even know what to do with themselves, its your hair baby! do what you want with it ; this is your life, people need to mind their own business.
Perhaps a couple of reasons they want the photo are: more proof there is an actual person behind the request rather than others wanting to sell it; and to put it on their bulletin board or newsletter if they indeed help this person. I reeeeeally doubt it is because of ethnic reasons. IMHO, that's worse for you to accuse that than for your accusers to suggest you are selfish.
@ShushLorraine It's entirely plausible that the companies look at the ethnic appearance of the child as LoL claims to make wigs as "natural-looking as possible." It's doubtful that they would give an Asian-looking child a blonde wig, for instance. One may not see the discrimination directly, but depending on accessibility, some children may be fit with wigs more readily than others. Also consider that many Africans are not encouraged to donate their hair, as the industry implies it's "not good."
I commed you for standing up for your rights, nobody should be pressured into cutting their hair!
Being selfish? Hell no. I'm a 38 year old woman with long hair, and I won't let anyone make me feel guilty for having long hair. Hell, i've seen senior citizens with long hair and it's down,
it looks beautiful, who the hell do people think they are?
Need I remind everyone, us Americans have rights, to wear our hair long is our condtitutional
It is a shame we have to feel th need to justify our hair to haters who are just jealous really. You would not believe the depths people in my past went to try to get me to cut my hair because they were furious with envy. Mine is just above my knees and I usually hide it in an updo not wanting the attention.
my opinion; its sweet and kind to donate your hair. especially you! look at yours. god. my older sister has grown her hair out and donated her hair to a few times. and my friend is going to chop all her hair off up to either her shoulders. and her hair stops at her waist. i don't see why you won't idc about the synthetic fiber hair. i really don't it doesn't last as long. and it shows what you would sacrifice for others.
@Alliexx0408xoxo You know, donating blood ALSO shows what you would sacrifice for others way more than donating hair . Donating HAIR doesn't save lives BUT donating blood does . The last time I donated blood, guess what ? I threw up then I fainted like 40 minutes after ( yes I ate the cookies and drank the juice like I was suppose to )
@Alliexx0408xoxo ( Continued ) And I couldn't even get up to go to the bathroom without crawling to it first because i was too dizzy and weak to even stand up for 24 hours after and it was ONLY a pint . Donating Blood made me sick as a dog afterwards.
@Alliexx0408xoxo ( Continued ) I got sent my blood donor card like 6 weeks after with a letter saying that my blood was able to be used for 3 different kinds of blood diseases . So I think donating my blood ( even though it made me sick afterwards ) was more beneficial and a testament to what I was willing to sacrifice for another human being way more then my hair would ever be .
This is very informative and I agree! I do not donate hair (I'm a little vain about it.) and I cannot donate blood (due to various medical reasons), but I donate money and baby items to the organizations I believe in. I donate to Autism Speaks and the Autism Foundation (I'm autistic), and I donate baby items for premature shelters mainly (I was a premie.) I love picking out blankets, personally! I believe in donating to things you believe in and things that make you feel good.
I don't get this either. In my opinion, saying someone is selfish for spending the time and effort to grow out and care for their hair and not donate it makes just as much sense as saying someone is selfish for NOT growing their hair out to donate. You don't see people boycotting hair salons or hassling people with shorter hair when they go for haircuts. :\
PS: No one wants to wear a wig, they want their own hair. I would rather see beautiful hair on its originator then on a wig.
PPS: Only the suction wigs work with totally bald heads, and they are mega expensive and do not get given on the NHS or the like.
I do not want your hair, keep it and let me appreciate beautiful hair on others. I would rather have this then know someone was bullied into donating their hair.
I am an Alopecia sufferer and at present have 90% body hair loss including the scalp. I get mistaken for chemo patients all the time.
I do not want people to cut their hair, donate their hair or anything else. The hair used for wigs has to be extremely healthy and of a certain length, the majority of it donated IS NOT used for wigs.
There is no need for real hair wigs, there are gorgious synthetic wigs out there, I have plenty. Wigs do not replace having your own hair.
Donating hair is a personal choice... I've donate mine after growing it really long, just because I wouldn't want all the good hair go to waste might as well make a wig for someone who needs hair. If don't want to donate its your choice no one should make you cut your hair if you don't want to. It's YOUR hair not theirs! Cheers :)
It is NOT selfish of you. You're not taking anything from the charity, you're just keeping your crowning glory :) I never want to donate mine either and it's only tailbone length
Ugh, I hate when people act self righteous because they've donated their hair. I used to work behind the chair in the salon and got pestered on a daily basis by coworkers and clients until I stopped wearing my hair down. My great grandmother passed away from cancer, as well. It's incredible that people act like because you've made a personal decision for yourself that you're wrong and selfish. You're not selfish for having your hair. It's yours, and they can look elsewhere if they don't like it.
@coralaisly When I get my hair cut, They always measure it to see if they can donate it, (my hair grows super fast) and then they just donate it. It's kinda weird. I don't really mind. I wouldn't ever call someone selfish for not wanting to donate their hair, because it's theirs.
@Pleedle If that's what you choose to do with yours, that's up to you. I have had clients who have religiously donated their hair for decades, I have nothing against them doing so. It's their hair, they could weave it into fabric and build a fort out of it for all I care. What I have a thing against is when people get judgmental and act as if they're better than I am because of a decision they've made for themselves.
I really appreciate this. I donated my hair when I wanted to get it cut, but up until then, people would just not stop pressuring me to donate my long hair, like there was something wrong with wanting my long hair for myself. The pressure NEVER stopped until cut it.
that's so weird that people would want you to cut your hair... if they feel so strongly about it then why don't they donate their own hair? it's your hair so you should do what you like with it! :)
That was a really nice speech, up until the point where you started justifying not cutting your hair with your work in cancer research. One has nothing to do with the other. You don't cut your hair because it's yours, you like it and nobody's life depends on it. Now, a s far as research is concerned (this coming from a biologist) , it's something you do because you get paid and probably enjoy doing.. Keep up the good work!;
Bottom line, it's YOUR HAIR to do with what YOU WANT. Anybody who doesn't like it, can kiss your azz. let them go and donate your their hair if they are so worried. i don't know where folks get off trying to boss over somebody else's hair and what they choose to do with their own hair. They need to worry about their own hair and what they want to do with it. Wear your hair girl, let it grow down to the ground like Rapunzel and wear it proudly and forget all the haters. They're just jealous.
Why should someone "HAVE" to donate their hair if they wish to keep it on their own head? I can understand if you were planning on getting a haircut anyway, but no one expects people with average lengths to automatically grow out and give it away.
Also, nothing against those companies, but I can buy cheaper lace-fronts at a local beauty supply store than the price that these wigs can go for. (like 50 dollars)
And for a child who is growing soo rapidly, paying that much is silly.
i do not understand why people are on this girls case about donating her hair those with cancer.. you act like natural hair is the only way to make wigs, when wigs can also be made from synthetic fibres. donating her hair does not make her a better person or make the suffering of someone with cancer any less. i'd much rather she worked on a cure for cancer and maybe no one would need to donate hair to anyone.
Do not listen to any of these ignorant people. keep doing what you are doing
You are shack on. If you want to really make a difference, give blood. I am O negative, CMV free. My blood goes to newborns. I roll up my sleeve, even though I hate needles. Also a bone marrow donor. If any short haired woman dares to challenge you, ask her how many times she has donated blood, is a bone marrow donor, and if giving hair is so important to her, why isn't she preaching to short haired woman to stop being selfish, cutting their hair short and grow it long to give.
@cwa14n3 Exactly. :) I still try to donate blood whenever possible (even though I'm alright with needles, I'm occasionally anemic so they don't always accept me). It's worth it when possible, and I really can't think of any excuse not to.
You give from the heart, where you feel it gives the greatest good, versus being manipulated. Wish all the other ladies had your insight. I hate seeing them used, and worse, giving credibility to their rapist/abusers, and attacking those who tell them they don't need to be slaves to these nazis.
@bishonenrancher Per a msg I sent to you; my daughter had cancer and left us in July. To be honest...she would never have worn a hair wig. I did sadly have a rage moment after she died and I cut my hair off but I wore scarves and I was fine..well, better now anyway. The issue of donating hair is over rated. Your hair looks great, I don't berate you for not donating and I am in a position to do so as I walked my daughter through the no hair beauty!! Donating blood is better! <3
@vienne101 the reason they make the wigs out of natural hair is it last longer than synthetic fiber. also synthetic fibers burn and won't hold up long under styling tools.
I know you "worked" in studying cancer before, but are you still involved in the research now? I was wondering what you knew about the rapunzel project/cold cap therapy to prevent hair loss in cancer patients. I was wondering if it might be a more worthy cause.
fist off, it is you choice to donate or not, whatever it is you have. but anyone downing these groups should, (a) do more than 10 minutes of research, or (b) start there own donation group, because it so easy!, or is it?
If more people donated, it would be easier for them to distribute hair to those who need it. If blood donations were minimal, then who would get what blood there was, and who decides and would you like to be that person who decides who gets the blood and who does not?
@BearUrArms Ah, but I do donate blood. It's a much worthier cause than donating hair and can be done more often than donating hair. It takes on average 1.5 years to grow enough hair for one donation, whereas I can make at least 6 blood donations in that time - which means saving up to 18 lives, instead of 20% of one person's vanity.
@bishonenrancher true, and this can be done at some blood drive almost any given weekend, to somehow make you feel better about yourself and get a free t-shirt, point being is if blood donations were minimal, not a comparison of there value. have you ever heard of a hair drive? and do you think those people that need it get that blood for free? or that it is all used for blood transfusion. These people are sick if they are being vain it's because the way the general public has treated them.
I'm kind of shocked about this attitude people seem to have in your country/ region. A donation is like a present, it is given because of one's free will and not because of duty. Wouldn't it be the same to blame people for having both kidneys, instead of donating one? Or for not donating blood? I mean, it's great and praiseworthy to donate those and help other people, but it should be a free decision and nothing to be taken for granted. So: great vid!
Also, I think you need to stop feeding the belief that you're going to die from cancer. Your thoughts create your reality, and when you focus repeatedly on those thoughts, you start to believe them and you start to accept them as true, when there's no reason they have to be. I recommend studying an energy healing modality like Reiki or pranic healing that you can perform on yourself. There are plenty of videos about energy healing on Youtube. I'm sending you love and healing Reiki energy.
This exact same shit happens to me! What the fuck is wrong with people? What is so evil about wanting to keep your hair rather than getting expensive haircuts every month? I cut 12 inches of my hair when my brother had cancer as a show of solidarity, but now that my hair's 3 feet long again people think it's their personal business what I do with it. Stupid women with trendy $300 haircuts think they have a right to tell me that my hair's too long, whatever the hell that means.
People who point the finger and blame are those who don't want to face themselves and their own misgivings. Living our own lives is difficult so trying to live others' lives means you have given up on living yours. So next time, people should think and refrain from making fools of themselves.
I dont see the big deal. If someone wants to grow their hair out, its their choice. If you don't want to cut it, thats the end of it. Ive donated my hair 2X now, but thats only cuz I wanted it short. It was nice to have 16" less hair. I think u have beautiful hair. My jaw dropped when I saw your hair trim vid & it was @ 47". I wish I had the ability to keep really long hair. But I like change too much :/ lol
I like your video, it was enlightening and showed us more of your personality. :)
There are plenty of human hair and natural looking wigs out in the world for people with hair loss.... if you don't want to donate your hair, that doesn't make you selfish at all. I don't get why some people think that....some people dont watch videos thoroughly before they comment. You seem like a great person and your hair is beautiful, do with it what you please :)
I live in Hawaii and it's common to see hair as long as yours, it's cultural as well as beautiful. What I have seen of your videos shows that you are consistently sensitive to the feelings and needs of others. It's unfortunate that the busy bodies of the world have implied and sometimes accused you of selfishness. Having long hair is a personal decision that is no one’s business but your own.
it makes no sense. People with short hair cut it off because they want it short. Do we get onto them for "wasting" their hair by regularly cutting it? They could grow theirs out and donate it! But they don't! No! What's the difference?
There are a lot of people who don't watch your video all the way through and are perfect examples of the people who judge those with long hair. I found your video on JJJ's official website. I personally love your video. I don't have to explain myself to people yet, since my hair is short, but just so I can get out the word and be on my way I'm going to have to make paper tabs with a link to this video and hand them out to everyone who asks me why I have long hair and don't donate it. Thank you.

okay umm... your are the dumbest person i have ever come across on youtube . im not a person who hates on youtube videos but this is stupid . i dont care if you have long hair thts your decision you idiot . donating your hair isnt to find a cure , its for women and little girls who havbe been fighting cancer and loose there hair . im not sure waht you know about this seeing you have never done it . think befor eyou speak . # dumb ass idiot .
@prettyisyourkingdom Wow. You clearly didn't watch the video; otherwise you would have known that I've worked in biochem/microbiology labs and researched cancer for years. I know more than most people about how cancer works (from both the doctor's and the patient's POV) but I don't need your validation or approval. Perhaps you should take your own advice: think before you react, instead of jumping to false conclusions. Your comment just makes you look foolish.
@prettyisyourkingdom My mother had cancer when I was younger. She couldn't have cared less about losing her hair though, what she cared about was getting better. In our own home she didn't even wear a wig most of the time, she only tended to put it on if we had visitors or if we were going out and that was to make others feel more comfortable. And my mother is not unique, to someone with a life-threatening illness their health is more important than their appearance.
@prettyisyourkingdom I always find it interesting that people like yourself who call others "idiots" and "dumb" can't spell and can't write using correct grammar. I suspect that you must have heard those words directed at yourself often while you grew up. ; )
Thanks you're also beautiful as well as kind and patient. Who does not know English well not to miss coming to see that combination of "will + not. Now I know that. Thanks. But six beautifull and please do see, in addition to your body and beautiful face, your sexy hair. thanks again and hope to soon have other email your friends. Maurizio from Italy
Good for you! You and your hair look fabulous, and anyone who suggests that you donate it is jealous of its beauty and your perseverence to grow it so magnificently long. Hair charities are generally scams which sell quality hair like yours, and are secretive about it. Congratulations!!!
I haven't yet been asked this question but would probably just reply, "I donate blood, not hair. I would rather save lives than vanity." Besides, they wouldn't want my color-treated and greying hair any way. I think people who want to donate hair it is a wonderful thing, but push people into doing it is wrong.
Don't listen to all this criticism, you're ONE human, you've done more than one could ever ask of you. Keep your hair, and feel pretty while you're saving the world. Who are we kidding? If everyone who had opinion, that you were selfish, grew their hair out and donated it, we would be able to give wigs away! Why comment on your long hair when they could take a look at themselves and try to do something for the less fortunate, instead of nagging on a girl on youtube?
I've only been asked if I will donate twice in my life. Once when I was a little girl (who would ask this to a girl who's clueless about cancer anyway?) & another recently when a family friend's daughter donated.
I mostly get commentary of "omg when r u gona cut ur hair????!" from people w/ short hair who think my long hair is ugly. My mom had long hair & cut it recently & the first remark out of an aunt's mouth to me was "So when are you cutting your hair?" what??? Why should I have to?!?
@Sitauset I've said in the past that if I cut my hair i would donate it but since I have colored it I don't think they will take it now. I also am QUITE attached to it. I'm almost positive that if I do cut my hair I will find a way to have it made into a wig piece to keep/wear always. Now THAT I think is probably more "selfish" than just not cutting/donating hair.
In my entire 28 years I've only cut my hair twice. A small trim in 5th grade/10in a few months ago. I love my hair too much..
@Sitauset I can totally relate to being attached to hair! It goes past the subject of vanity - it's still attached to your body and is part of your body. I've had people say "But it's not like you NEED it to live." What many don't understand is that long hair is a hairstyle in its own right. People with short hair, medium hair, etc aren't approached by strangers and asked why they don't grow their hair longer in order to donate. Why should those with long hair be treated any differently?
@bishonenrancher I can't imagine how someone with shorter hair would react to being asked that question. I'm sure they'd be equally upset as to why they're imposing on their personal style. And that's what long hair is for us.. a personal style! My hair does not have a sign on it that says "Suggestions Welcome." I've actually been told my hair made me look like an OLD woman. What??? LOL
I might not need my long hair to "live" but it is part of my "identity." I've had it long all my life!

i agree that cutting ur hair wont help but it goes to making a wig for usually a child who has cancer. im not saying ur a bad person if u dont wanna donate your hair. its YOUR hair u can do what ever u want, but i donated 2 times so far and im only 11. i bet you would think differently if u NEEDED chemo therapy but nothing wrong with ur opinion. maybe you dont know anybody with cancer but 2 ppl that are close to me had cancer so thats why i donated.
@sarastarp99 Cancer is very prevalent in my family. I may not donate my hair but I worked in labs for 6 years, contributing to cancer research. In the process I exposed myself to countless carcinogenic reagents which may result in my having cancer. I consider putting my health at risk a much greater sacrifice than donating my hair. I honestly don't know how I would think if/when I need chemo - I can be vain at times - but chances are, I would be more focused on getting healthy than having hair.
oh comon people... its 21st century, we can make wigs out of artificial materials. its like "shave your head so somebody else wont have to be bald" where is the logic in that? hair might grow back, but it took me about 4 years to grow it and i m 20 so that is like 1/5th of my life. and still there is a morron on every corner making jokes about cutting it. (i am a dude)

I've donated to WfK before and I'm really glad I did it - but if I choose not to do it again, that's no one's business but my own.
mayandarko 4 days ago
i think that the assumption that hair loss is so bad that we need charities to harvest peoples hair and redistribute it to those without hair reinforces the idea that you must be ugly if you have no hair. It would be better to send the message to people that hair is just hair and you can still feel comfortable without it. Cancer and alopecia are not rare conditions- we should be trying to normalise hairlessness rather than masking it so that people dont feel they *need* a wig to feel comfortable

Catlover123445 1 week ago
Whenever a disaster strikes, the Red Cross begs for blood. Even though, very little blood is given for disaster relief. Most of the donor blood is sold to hospitals; which makes the Red Cross $1.9 Billion a yr. While Locks of Love's, hair charity, makes only $1.9 million a yr selling hair. So in that sense donating blood is more exploitative. Look you don't have to justify not donating your hair. It's your hair. Just don't make it seem like donating blood is better than hair. It's all the same.
archyteckie08 1 week ago
@archyteckie08 Thanks for your valuable input. I haven't donated to Red Cross; I donate to Canadian blood services. They allow blood donations every 2 months and as far as the online questionnaire goes, they don't turn away homosexuals. Although exploitation will be found everywhere, I do believe that donating blood IS better than hair, as blood will go toward saving a life or improving a patient's health and quality of life, as opposed to solely protecting their self-image.

Georgiinaa18x 3 weeks ago
Wow, I find this so wrong. Why would people berate you so badly? I'm amazed at long hair; I would love to have long hair, however, I dye mine and have layers and fringe. I would donate blood, however, I cannot because I'm anemic. My mum has had cancer several times and she doesn't care about her appearance; only health. People need to realize this.
PerfectionInLoss 3 weeks ago
There is a logical break in the argumentation, if one say that you are a bad and immoral person, just because of the fact that you do not donate your hair. Everyone who says so, would have to grow his own hair for donating reasons. Moreover those people do not understand the difference between "yours" and "mine". To say it clear my hair is out of your business.
TheGreenJadetiger 3 weeks ago
Speaking as one who has had an aunt pass from lung cancer, and a mother recovering from breast cancer, I don't agree with you. I understand that people should have the freedom to do what they want with their own hair..but 1) it's just hair, you can easily regrow the measly 15 inches. 2) think of how someone feels when people look at them funny because chemo took all their hair. 3) if you were recovering from cancer with a hairless head, wouldn't you wish someone had been so giving?
brittb1983 3 weeks ago

People ask me when I am going to donate my hair (they never ask if I am going to... they always assume.) I reply, "Maybe I will when my hair is down to my knees.. Maybe not even then.." They look shocked that I'm not planning on doing it soon let alone hardly even considering it.
hils22787 3 weeks ago 2
@hils22787 Thanks very much for your kind comments and your support. :) It really irks me when others try to make me feel guilty for keeping my hair; as if I don't deserve to keep a part of my own body. There are some people who get their hair trimmed at a salon every 6 weeks; do people berate them for getting regular trims instead of growing their hair long? Do girls get patronized for dying their hair instead of keeping it virgin? No, so why should we accept this harassment? We shouldn't.
bishonenrancher 3 weeks ago 4
@hils22787
I don't trust the red cross.. i hear they don't accept blood from gay people. They are full religious bigots and homophobes. This is disgusting.
Catlover123445 1 week ago
@Catlover123445 @Catlover123445 You have to be completely infection-free to donate blood. When having anal sex, there is a greater chance of getting a small infection. The people the blood is transferred to already have weakened immune systems. It's of course bad that gey people can't contribute with blood, but it's just another safety measure.
lollsazz 5 days ago
@lollsazz
Catlover123445 5 days ago
@lollsazz
Catlover123445 5 days ago
You are selfish for downgrading people donating their hair to charity. Just because you dont have the generosity or courage to donate your own does not mean you should downplay and try to excuse yourself by downplaying organizations doing a hell of a lot more for these children than you are.
sobomb101 3 weeks ago
@sobomb101 As I said before, I never downgraded the donators. I actually noted that their hearts are in the right place. Everything I said in this video was said with honesty and no sarcasm. I spent 7 years in microbiology labs doing research related to understanding cancer better; just because I didn't find a cure, does that make me "selfish"?. Would you like to give 7 years of your life? Did you even have the patience to give 14 minutes to watch this video? Your comment sounds like you didn't.
bishonenrancher 3 weeks ago 18
@sobomb101 People like to throw around the word "selfish" to people they don't even know. What's wrong with people just letting their hair grow for their own interest? A lot of those women are talked down and treated like shit until they get their hair cut for LoL. I'm sorry, but it didn't sound like she was downgrading people who donate. She's talking about how the charity itself could be a scam because of what she heard.

I totally agree, people can make more money from ppl being sick in this country than being healthy, I feel like companies have found that the word CANCER can be a big money maker....every time someone buys a pink bracelet for breast cancer how much of that really goes to cancer research?...

And I will also donate my blood when I'm old enough.
HryPotrFreak 1 month ago
I'm sorry but this was crap. The picture is to see first hand what child needs the wig most. The recommendations are to see what child will deserve it.The written assignment from the child is to see who will appreciate it most. The financial records are to see which families can not afford it compared to the others.
And no one makes the decision to be "bald". They want the cancer treated and people like me give them my hair to make them feel better about their cancer treatment.
HryPotrFreak 1 month ago
@HryPotrFreak Most of the time the children prefer caps or handkerchiefs, because wigs can be very itchy. Ever put on a wig on Halloween? It was probably annoying and made your scalp itch. Her point of this video is because she wants people to stop saying she's selfish, or other women with long hair selfish because they keep their hair long. It is very rude for people who don't know you to just tell you "cut your hair, or
you're selfish".
CuteandCreepy123 1 month ago
@HryPotrFreak On every long hair video, there are always girls telling girls with hair longer than their breast to cut it off for Locks of Love, which has been known to be a scam. They might have changed, but they used to just throw away most of the ponytails or send them to extension companies. I just don't understand why people tell women with long hair to cut it off because "it's not in", or "they should donate it".
CuteandCreepy123 1 month ago
@CuteandCreepy123 Yes I've worn a Halloween wig, and it didn't bother me, even though I was 7.
And locks of love sells the hair that doesn't meet standard to pay for the wigs. How else will they get the money. Sure you've got a buttload of hair, but how will you make a wig? Send it to a wigmaker. That costs money they probably don't have. So by selling some of the hair you can make a wig w/ the rest. It still goes to the children.
HryPotrFreak 1 month ago
@HryPotrFreak The vast majority of LoL wigs do not go to cancer patients, they go to alopecia patients. I'm tired of companies playing the "cancer" card to motivate donators who think their hair will go to a child who is sick; in reality most people with alopecia are entirely healthy. Also, LoL receives money from at least 3 different places: from selling their hair to other companies, by receiving monetary donations, and by subsidizing their wigs - most families still have to pay for the wigs.

Of course those companies collect long hair to sell them as extensions and make money!
Sometimes they advertise by providing wigs to kids having cancer, this is only communication!
And commercial action collect more hair, push people to donate the material they will reseale, and make more money not going to cancer fighting!

It's a bigger cause than your small "contribution" of yammering on and on about how it's a worthless cause.
beenie1229 1 month ago
@beenie1229 There is never a point in this video where I downgrade donators. I DO downgrade the "non-profit" companies who exploit both the patients & the donators by throwing out hair, selling some to "offset costs" and then also subsidizing wigs to the patients. These are not rumors, these are facts stated on their own websites. As for my "small contribution of yammering on", I spent years in a lab contributing to cancer research and I also donate blood. Watch the whole video before you judge.

Kyugestgi 2 months ago
i am so happy to see this video of you...i have the same problem at my channel...and some people get really nasty about it, unbelieveable! one has to have the right to grow out his/her hair without it to having to be to cut it off for donation! one can contribute to the world and the people in thousand other ways, so why don't leave us longhairs alone and do actually something yourself to help people, instead of commenting others!

Its like your selfish cause you drink fluids just to sweat it out.
Its your hair. Your own BODY which you have a right to last time I checked, you choose what you wanna do with your hair :3

Long Hair is a kind of natural beauty, for me it makes no sense to give it only a justification if it is sacrificed.

selfish for growing your hair?
thats like calling someone selfish because they want to be more attractive, slim and sexy.
people are envious and dont even know what to do with themselves, its your hair baby! do what you want with it ; this is your life, people need to mind their own business.
coolbeens21 3 months ago
Perhaps a couple of reasons they want the photo are: more proof there is an actual person behind the request rather than others wanting to sell it; and to put it on their bulletin board or newsletter if they indeed help this person. I reeeeeally doubt it is because of ethnic reasons. IMHO, that's worse for you to accuse that than for your accusers to suggest you are selfish.
ShushLorraine 3 months ago
@ShushLorraine It's entirely plausible that the companies look at the ethnic appearance of the child as LoL claims to make wigs as "natural-looking as possible." It's doubtful that they would give an Asian-looking child a blonde wig, for instance. One may not see the discrimination directly, but depending on accessibility, some children may be fit with wigs more readily than others. Also consider that many Africans are not encouraged to donate their hair, as the industry implies it's "not good."

my opinion; its sweet and kind to donate your hair. especially you! look at yours. god. my older sister has grown her hair out and donated her hair to a few times. and my friend is going to chop all her hair off up to either her shoulders. and her hair stops at her waist. i don't see why you won't idc about the synthetic fiber hair. i really don't it doesn't last as long. and it shows what you would sacrifice for others.
Alliexx0408xoxo 3 months ago
@Alliexx0408xoxo You know, donating blood ALSO shows what you would sacrifice for others way more than donating hair . Donating HAIR doesn't save lives BUT donating blood does . The last time I donated blood, guess what ? I threw up then I fainted like 40 minutes after ( yes I ate the cookies and drank the juice like I was suppose to )

@Alliexx0408xoxo ( Continued ) I got sent my blood donor card like 6 weeks after with a letter saying that my blood was able to be used for 3 different kinds of blood diseases .

Cheers :)

It's yours, and they can look elsewhere if they don't like it.
coralaisly 4 months ago
@coralaisly When I get my hair cut, They always measure it to see if they can donate it, (my hair grows super fast) and then they just donate it. It's kinda weird. I don't really mind. I wouldn't ever call someone selfish for not wanting to donate their hair, because it's theirs.
Pleedle 3 months ago
@Pleedle If that's what you choose to do with yours, that's up to you. I have had clients who have religiously donated their hair for decades, I have nothing against them doing so. It's their hair, they could weave it into fabric and build a fort out of it for all I care. What I have a thing against is when people get judgmental and act as if they're better than I am because of a decision they've made for themselves.
coralaisly 3 months ago
I really appreciate this. I donated my hair when I wanted to get it cut, but up until then, people would just not stop pressuring me to donate my long hair, like there was something wrong with wanting my long hair for myself. The pressure NEVER stopped until cut it.

That was a really nice speech, up until the point where you started justifying not cutting your hair with your work in cancer research. One has nothing to do with the other. You don't cut your hair because it's yours, you like it and nobody's life depends on it. Now, a s far as research is concerned (this coming from a biologist) , it's something you do because you get paid and probably enjoy doing.. Keep up the good work!;
tsopana25 4 months ago
Bottom line, it's YOUR HAIR to do with what YOU WANT. Anybody who doesn't like it, can kiss your azz. let them go and donate your their hair if they are so worried. i don't know where folks get off trying to boss over somebody else's hair and what they choose to do with their own hair. They need to worry about their own hair and what they want to do with it. Wear your hair girl, let it grow down to the ground like Rapunzel and wear it proudly and forget all the haters. They're just jealous.
nancydrew5 4 months ago

94MaverickGT 3 months ago 4
@vienne101 the reason they make the wigs out of natural hair is it last longer than synthetic fiber. also synthetic fibers burn and won't hold up long under styling tools.
OhSoPretty91 3 months ago
I know you "worked" in studying cancer before, but are you still involved in the research now? I was wondering what you knew about the rapunzel project/cold cap therapy to prevent hair loss in cancer patients. I was wondering if it might be a more worthy cause.
RaeLynnShikure 5 months ago
fist off, it is you choice to donate or not, whatever it is you have. but anyone downing these groups should, (a) do more than 10 minutes of research, or (b) start there own donation group, because it so easy!, or is it?
If more people donated, it would be easier for them to distribute hair to those who need it. If blood donations were minimal, then who would get what blood there was, and who decides and would you like to be that person who decides who gets the blood and who does not?
BearUrArms 5 months ago
@BearUrArms Ah, but I do donate blood. It's a much worthier cause than donating hair and can be done more often than donating hair. It takes on average 1.5 years to grow enough hair for one donation, whereas I can make at least 6 blood donations in that time - which means saving up to 18 lives, instead of 20% of one person's vanity.
bishonenrancher 4 months ago 20

Chizpurfle52595 6 months ago 5
People who point the finger and blame are those who don't want to face themselves and their own misgivings. Living our own lives is difficult so trying to live others' lives means you have given up on living yours. So next time, people should think and refrain from making fools of themselves.

AnneEast 7 months ago 2
it makes no sense. People with short hair cut it off because they want it short. Do we get onto them for "wasting" their hair by regularly cutting it? They could grow theirs out and donate it! But they don't! No! What's the difference?

@prettyisyourkingdom Wow. You clearly didn't watch the video; otherwise you would have known that I've worked in biochem/microbiology labs and researched cancer for years. I know more than most people about how cancer works (from both the doctor's and the patient's POV) but I don't need your validation or approval. Perhaps you should take your own advice: think before you react, instead of jumping to false conclusions. Your comment just makes you look foolish.
bishonenrancher 7 months ago 39
@prettyisyourkingdom My mother had cancer when I was younger. She couldn't have cared less about losing her hair though, what she cared about was getting better. In our own home she didn't even wear a wig most of the time, she only tended to put it on if we had visitors or if we were going out and that was to make others feel more comfortable. And my mother is not unique, to someone with a life-threatening illness their health is more important than their appearance.

I haven't yet been asked this question but would probably just reply, "I donate blood, not hair. I would rather save lives than vanity." I've only been asked if I will donate twice in my life.
Sitauset 8 months ago
@Sitauset I've said in the past that if I cut my hair i would donate it but since I have colored it I don't think they will take it now. I also am QUITE attached to it. I'm almost positive that if I do cut my hair I will find a way to have it made into a wig piece to keep/wear always. Now THAT I think is probably more "selfish" than just not cutting/donating hair.
In my entire 28 years I've only cut my hair twice. A small trim in 5th grade/10in a few months ago. I love my hair too much..
Sitauset 8 months ago
@Sitauset I can totally relate to being attached to hair! It goes past the subject of vanity - it's still attached to your body and is part of your body. I've had people say "But it's not like you NEED it to live." What many don't understand is that long hair is a hairstyle in its own right. People with short hair, medium hair, etc aren't approached by strangers and asked why they don't grow their hair longer in order to donate. Why should those with long hair be treated any differently?
bishonenrancher 8 months ago
@bishonenrancher I can't imagine how someone with shorter hair would react to being asked that question. I'm sure they'd be equally upset as to why they're imposing on their personal style. And that's what long hair is for us.. a personal style! My hair does not have a sign on it that says "Suggestions Welcome." I've actually been told my hair made me look like an OLD woman. What??? LOL
I might not need my long hair to "live" but it is part of my "identity." I've had it long all my life!
