Sonic's gameplay wasn't broken, although I'd agree that the recent games are. The whole "speed" thing is overstated, and frankly is what has ruined the recent Sonic games. Sonic was never about pure speed. Seriously, play the first 3 sonic games and its mostly a matter of ballistics and good platforming, speed is just one tool you have at your disposal. That is why, while I love Sonic more than Mario, I respect Nintendo more than Sega; for keeping the design much tighter and true to platforming.

Yeah I probably shouldn't have mentioned Sonic... I guess my overall point was that just because this look similar to the old Mario games doesn't mean its a crappy rehash. This game looks really carefully designed with some cool new powerups.

I also agree with that point. IGN says Nintendo didn't put effort into this game and Nintendo just played it safe with the game(I've already wrote a comment displaying my opinion, so I'll have it on my channel if you want to see).

NSMB on the DS was awesome. There's still a place in the world for tightly designed, well polished 2D platformers. I wish Sega had carried on making Sonic to this standard. I remember being 9 years old and finishing Sonic & Knuckles thinking, "there'll be another one soon..." Well there fucking wasn't. Sonic went all 3D and shit, and appeared in tacky, gimmicky handheld games where all you had to do was hold right and jump occasionally. More of the same can be a good thing. Well done Nintendo.

Well said! After having grown up with the original SMB on the NES, it's nice that Nintendo decided to have a newer, fresher addition to the series. this worked for them when they put out SMB3, and it'll work again for them in the future.

Also, the Sonics 1-3 and Sonic and Knuckles are why I still have a Sega Genesis ^_^

Sonic was horribly broke, total rose tinted specs case, I mean what sort of game says RUN FAST RUN FAST RUN FAST then makes spikes appear right below your character with no warning? Its complete bad design, mario would never pull that shit because its well designed and the game mechanic actually works.

Regardless, it is pretty much impossible for Nintendo to change up anything with their old ip mechanics. You see, unlike the casual market, older nintendo ips have FANS. Fans are really crappy things to have because they whine and moan about ANY changes or concessions you make to a new iteration of your IP. If I were nintendo, I would've dropped Mario after the SNES, but the Japanese seem to be more into milking every penny out of franchises than I or most Americans are.

Stupid comment. Nintendo is the single most influential and successful (both by fanbase and by monetary measure) video game entity in existence. Even during the GameCube era, it was more successful than Sony and Microsoft combined because of its genius with handhelds.

Nintendo reboots its series for a reason. They're always critically acclaimed, loved by fans, and sell mass units.

It was made pretty clear that Nintendo has dropped out of the hardware arms race and returned to the NES roots.

Actually, that would be kinda interesting if not completely in poor taste with the given ethnic stereotypes. But alas, the thing I'd rather see is *some genre-defying genre* *something not Mario* game from Nintendo. What I want most is a Lost Vikings sequel, but I don't think anyone (nor Blizzard) will produce that.

I don't see how Nintendo are so easily forgiven for churning out Mario games in 2009 that have so little improvement from the games they made in the 1980s. They don't even bother improving the graphics significantly. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Mario games as a kid but how can this childish cartoon shite compete with PS3 and Xbox games? just sayin'...

Nintendo is wise to this. Which is why they have abandoned gamers like you who are significantly harder to please than this horde of casual gamers that represents their core market demographic. I see this game as more of a "hey, aging hardcore gamers! We haven't forgotten about you, we just haven't figured out anything interesting [profitable] we can do with you.
