Back when my brother in-law was a baby, his parents found a bat in his room, but no sign of a bite. Later when he was 20 something he went to the docter for allergy testing and they found rabies antibodies. He was actually positive for rabies but somehow managed to survive with no show of symptoms. Docters felt it was b/c he was malignant-hypothermia positive, a rare disorder that runs in their family with the immune system that he managed to survive. Fascinating to me.

Back when my brother in-law was a baby, his parents found a bat in his room, but no sign of a bite. Later when he was 20 something he went to the docter for allergy testing and they found rabies antibodies. He was actually positive for rabies but somehow managed to survive with no show of symptoms. Docters felt it was b/c he was malignant-hypothermia positive, a rare disorder that runs in their family with the immune system that he managed to survive. Fascinating to me.

@55mautak if you had rabies youd be dead with in 17 days of showing symptoms, hydrophobia in rabies is caused by severe spasms of the voicbox and diaphram. most rabies victims suffer respiratory failure with in a week of first symptoms, pain and numbness in a limb, fever, vomiting...and by the time the patient shows symptoms of hydrophobia they then have less than a week to live with out hospitalization

It makes them hydrophobic because their swallowing reflexes are neutralized with the virus (the epiglottis can't go up and block the airway), and so, when the patient attempts to drink, the liquid will flow to the trachea and the patient chokes, but since that reflex is neutralized too the liquid will go to the lungs... the hydrophobia is a psychological reaction to this.
