The main character is Alto, who hates the artificial sky of this colony and wants to become a pilot to escape from it. His fate then gets entwined with two girls -- Sheryl Nome, a famous songstress from a neighbouring colony ship; and Ranka Lee, a young girl whose singing is mysteriously connected to the Vajra aliens.

I'm speaking for myself when I say that love is complicated, esp. if it involves 3 persons. I don't think every1 would agree that Alto should be with Sheryl or Ranka so that's why the anime ended the way it did. If Alto makes up his mind and picks a girl instead of dragging out their 3-way relationship then it would change everything. Both girls have their special moments with Alto so it's fair for them to have equal chance with him. Am I wrong on this?
Well...in SDF Macross both woman had a somewhat equal ground and the protagonist has a really hard time to decide. Not to mention that I think the romance was pretty much one sided for me. Ranka constantly tried to catch up with Sheryl in almost everything. Expcept ep 13-15 where she shined(and awakened my hopes for her character development sorrily without a fruit). Now honestly, If we look on the show until the first half of ep 25 who's on the lead? I don't buy the unresolved end.
OT3 in fiction (or at least fandom) stands for 'One True Threesome' where a love triangle (or larger group) is solved with the two most liked love interests of the main character sharing said love interest. Seems to be most common with one male and two female but can just as easily be reversed or with one male/female interested in someone of the same gender.
In this case some scenes and the TV ending seemed to suggest Sheryl/Alto/Ranka. Not sure about the light novels.

actually there is, alto dates sheryl because ranka goes with her brother out into space to find the planet the vajra come from, and near the end Alto tells the girl who fell inlove with michael that he loves Ranka. But he ends up choosing the sky and not them too. XD
In my opinion: Well, it's difficult to choose between the two of them. So these love-triangle anime series will always end it by not choosing either, but leave the possibility to the viewer's imagination. This way will keep both fans from both sides happy. I guess it is to be expected if Alto chooses one then the other will be upset about it. Anyways, it was a happy ending.

Macross Frontier is almost exactly the same script that were use for the orginal SDF: MACROSS.
Ranka Lee is rescued by Alto as Hikaru recued Lynn Minmei. Then the triangle love between Alto, Ranka and Sheryl, remind me the same triangle between Hikaru, Misa and Minmei.
Sheryl is meant for Alto. The two of them get along great together when they are solo.
Beside she is fucking HOT in everything she wears and her confidence is something I have never seen in any anime character.
Ranka can barely keep up with Sheryl mentally and physically. How many times has Sheryl stolen Alto away from Ranka ?! I think like 5 times. Ranka got only 1 single 1 up on Sheryl when she kissed Alto on the beach.
lots of good anime on 2008, but Macross Frontier its far the best, its a mixed of feelings every time i watch it specialy Aimo song gives me shivers :D im loving it but 9 episodes more and its over, hopefully Soul eater will be around by then.
I thought I was the only one that thought it was probably the best. Everyone seems to be all over Geass. That's a good show too but it doesn't bring about neerly as much emotion as Macross Frontier. The music in Frontier really helps too. I almost shed a tear several times watching.

Dude man, you're crazy. Code Geass is wayyy better than this Macross Frontier. First of all, did you watch episode 12 of this Macross Frontier??? That's the gayest episode i've ever seen. Code Geass brings a lot more elements than emotion. Code Geass has political, action, comedy, and tragedy. It has all the elements that make up a good anime. Good ending and unpredictable twists in the plot. Like I said earlier dude, Code Geass is way better than Macross.

Probably one of the best moment of the serie. Too bad it was so poorly animated and drawn, they should have spend more money.
