£600,000 ouch. Think how much the general workers got to pay whilst you have rich people getting richer, poor people getting poorer and scum who come over from other country's just to get 2 years free labour and go back home. (That does not include local/young people who are entitled) Return of the trams, more like return of the Jedi.
The UK should never had done away with Trams in the first place, Blackpool did th right thing the trams there have their own track along prom from Stargate & inland through Cleavleys the systam does share the same road Fleetwood, near north peir & the rigby rd. area of Blackpool, tram in Blackpool really and so does Manchester, prefer the Tram over the bus becoase you get the driver dawdling at the stop
Although it cause some problems during construction It is very good idea to return trams to the city. They are space effective, environmentally friendly. They will encourage people to use public transport. It is great if tram is longer in Edinburgh then it will multiply its advantage of high capacity. I wish every city to have so clever government. Trams create cities much more human and nice...It will help business when it will be finished.
Why are we so negative in this country? Why do we always whinge about spending money on something that is good for the future? Why do businesses that were failing anyway always have to blame it on something else, like trams or smoking bans?
Hey! we can all whinge if we want. It doesnt get us anywhere. lol. We whinged at the cost of the Scottish Parliament,a nd stil is cost a whopping £450 million! Whinge, whinge, whinge! lol
Because trams are not only cleaner than buses they look much, much more atractive. They operate at better frequency than buses,as well as east congestion on the streets.
Yeah lets put more noisy, diesel smoke spewing buses on the road. That'll do the trick. Trams carry more folk more regularly. Buses are not the future.
The trams will hardly serve anybody in Edinburgh! they only replace one bus route! of all the bus journeys I have ever taken in Edinburgh exactly none travel on the tram route.
They may be more spacious and efficient but if they don't offer a service that is of any use to the majority of Edinburgh residents then you can't expect us to be jumping for joy at all the money being thrown at it.
This thing is costing a fortune and is only taking a few buses off the road.
So along the whole route from Leith they will not serve anybody in Edinburgh? You may not get a bus that covers that route but many others do. Its route goes from east to west, how will it not serve anybody???
The tram line is not supposed to be one route replacing one bus. Its supposed to be a fast artery through the city connecting main bus areas so you can get off the tram and onto a bus to your area. In Dublin the bus from outskirts where I used to live took 70mins and tram takes 20 mins.
The problem with this project is the councils usual lack of communication with the public, i.e. no one actually knows why we need the tram.
I was speaking to a guy today in the model on Princes street and he made clear some of my issues with it. You are right on in saying that communication is an issue.
That said, I'm still not entirely convinced that this project is worthwhile, it will still be useless to me and small business are being left to die at the roadsides.
I see one large clothing store on Princes Street has even pulled out at the end of its lease leaving yet another empty unit on our prime shopping street.
'I'm still not entirely convinced that this project is worthwhile, it will still be useless to me' Thats you criteria for whether an integrated transport network should be built? How very selfish.
Dear Mr Jackass, try reading all my comments instead of taking HALF a sentence and representing it out of context.
As I said, These Trams do not serve the vast majority of Edinburgh residents. The construction is causing massive disruption, costing a fortune, and driving businesses away or out of business completely.
Thanks to the greed of TIE our city center will be a construction site during our busiest tourism months.
Not needed, not wanted, so why on earth are we wasting money on them?
Nice one, so you want a more comprehensive network to cover more of the city but not the disruption to build it.Well it won't appear out of thin air you know. 'Dear mr jackass' well the trams will be serving thousands of people long after you are dead.Gutted.
I'm sorry... I fail to see any point at which I asked for a tram system at all. If you are going to argue with someone at least bother to read what they are saying.
And if I knew how to install a tram network with no disruption I would be a millionaire. What is your point? Do you like "theroyalshow" read things which nobody has actually written? because I don't think anyone here has implied that it is possible to install a tram network without some disruption.
If you knew how to install a tram network one hopes that you would have the democratic decency to ask the people if they wanted it first.
The only people who stand to gain from this appear to be developers in Leith. What was wrong with Edinburgh buses continuing to do a good job or are they a bit plebian for the likes of you?
don't care if our city center will be a construction site during our busiest tourism months. i am sick of the people that moan and groan about the trams they are coming no matter what they say
Hi spaniel - not ill informed. I've lived here in Edinburgh for 30 years and have yet to meet anyone who either wants or expects the trams to help our city prosper. With one of the UKs best bus systems in place and threatened by this white elephant it appears that the prime movement for trams has come from developers of former Forth Ports Authority land....
I'm from Edinburgh. Lived here for 39 years (for what its worth). I think the trams are a great idea. Like they were for Manchester, Melbourne, Amsterdam etc etc. The sooner people get their fat arses out of cars in the city centre, the better. The way traffic is increasing is alarming and something has to be done. Bravo to the trams.
I already take buses into town! The lack of parking and the second to none bus service has convinced me to give up the car.
These trams do not go near ANY park of Edinburgh that is useful to me and the vast majority of Edinburgh residents will have no use whatsoever for the route that is proposed!
Trams are a waste of money. It will only service 20% of Edinburghs Population. I mean its not going to be any use for anyone living in South House going to Silverknowes for example.
The chaos never really materialised as you thought. I have to say, i'm well impressed as to how things have been handled. Ironically, my journey time has been cut by 10 minutes now the work has commenced at Shandwick.

When most cities need to replace two busses, they go and buy two busses, but that kind of thinking is just far too logical for the Labour party.
Was in Edinburgh yesterday... cones and barriers going on for 2km... Shandwick place resembling something from 28 days later...
Apparently business there is down 40-60%. Is it really worth it?

For HALF the money spent on it we could replace EVERY bus in Edinburgh with a modern, efficient, spacious, wheelchair friendly bus.
How exactly is an oversized vehicle stuck on rails going to help ease congestion? It only replaces one bus route with two even bigger trams!
DeltaNC 3 years ago
Trams last 2x long than busses,Its much more attractive to passengers, and doesnt have to rely the worlds ever depleting supply of petro.

Ask the business owners at Shandwick place and you'll get a different story. Takings down 40-60% and no compensation at all for their loss.
