European powers, as early as the Pax Romana, have considered North Africa, and later the whole of Africa, as "their" granary, as the provider of free raw materials, free/cheap labour. Things got worse in the last 50-80 years with the help of the USA. Help from Europe and the USA was/is as usual: military intervention, fomenting "democratic revolutions", as soon as their interests are threathened, like what is going on in Libya right now, and in the whole region!
