  • awesome performance and great advertisement for martin guitars

  • There is only one race, the human race. Skin color doesn't matter. Skin color is a characteristic, like hair color or being left-handed. Racism and racists are boring, stupid and wrong. This is a brilliant song and Janis Ian does it perfectly.

  • Racists dont go to heaven!

  • I always thought it was about the Unacceptance of Homosexuality !!!

  • LOL, who disliked this.. moron

  • 17?I will always love you Janis.

  • En Español, TEMAZO, pa cagarse la perra, que supuestamente es insensible a la musica de los humanos.

  • Parents and society need to stop feeding their children this racist crap!

  • @unklewink No it is pointing out that you need to stop listening to people

  • @unklewink ... I think nature inplanted racism within us for the preservation of our kind, it has nothing to do with right or wrong. We didnt create ourselves, and niether do we create the thoughts we think, nature did, and does. We can supersede some of our instincts with our ability to reason, but easier said then done.

  • @unklewink ... What do you mean nature is not responsible? Does a Lion go with a Cheetah even though their from the same genus? You are right animals dont fight because of difference in color. Their instincts tell them not to, that is unless their survival is threatened which really comes down to fight or flight. Now from a human standpoint some behaviors are learned like hate racism, but self preservation racism has nothing to do with hate. We can get along with other races, yet preserve ours.

  • This song is brilliant. Love has no color, age, sex. Love is love!

  • Beautiful song, beautifully sung about a taboo subject (back then). What a beautiful melody with a haunting organ. Of course, the organ rif at the end was stolen and put at the end of Indian Reservation by Paul Revere and the Raiders. Her other big hit, At Seventeen, was awesome, too. Ms. Ian has a real penchant for writing socially conscious lyrics accompanied with a catchy melody.

  • She was the real deal!!!Lady Ga ga I dont think so!!!!Please wake up youth!!!!!!

  • This song breaks my heart everytime I hear it. Janis Ian is a musical genius--seriously!!

  • She was only sixteen here, amazing....

  • heartwrenching..

  • wow, never heard this one. It's great!

  • She signed my ancient LP last night! Such grace , such presence and true individuality. Great woman.

  • This song put her on the map, and At Seventeen got her into the top 40, but her best song is This is the Sunset of Your Life.

  • Well you aint lying!!Damn good quality!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks so much!!!

  • Great song both then and now. Still has great meaning.

  • What an incredible talent. Compare this to any performance you would see on American Idol today. There is no comparison.

  • One of my very best favorites

  • this song helped the change

thank g-d my kids wouldn't even understand

    the world has changed

  • one of the best songs of the 60's; those were the days musically

  • isnt this on the digitally remastered dvd set???

  • Thks for posting..in the 70's..I remember Between the Lines.......Aftertones..and Stars...she sure was light yrs ahead of her time..with this and At Seventeen. Great post.

  • what a beautiful song its all in the mix.

  • this song was originally banned and an Atlanta radio station that played it on the air was torched over it.

  • An outstanding voice and talent!

  • All rap is kill whity or beat the BI$ch

  • this happen to janis !!!!

  • had this record back in 1967, what a message it send to the generation!!!!! where is janis?

  • Thanks for posting this. Powerful song, and courageous of her. I loved Janis Ian back in the '70s, especially her albums PRESENT COMPANY, BETWEEN THE LINES, STARS. I really haven't listened to her recent music.

  • @hbailen

  • We did not change the world as was our dream - the machine continues to grind people up at a ferocious pace - but the Boomers did much to facilitate civil rights. Perhaps a future generation candismantle the machine. For my children and grandchildren's' sake - I hope so.

  • Janis Ian - you blow my mind with this legendary song...Dan O'Niallain

  • The song was never banned , nobody had the balls to sign her up, finally and i don'r remember who did so, many radio stations would not play it but if you grew up in that era some did because i listened to it on radio.

  • @dictator54 It was banned until murry the k played it on fm and leonard bernstein had her on his tv special which is what you are watching right now

  • @spacepatrolman No, this is from The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

  • It's been nearly 35 years since I've heard this song! While the melody is infectiously beautiful, the lyrics hit me in the gut big time because several times in my life, I was like the "boy" in the song and I was on the receiving end of grief from both sides as a result of it. Thanks for posting this.

  • And now young people listen to rap and auto tuned voices and think it is music @_@

  • @Karoke77 Rap is music you just have to know what artist are true dont talk about rap if you dont know about it

  • @Karoke77 naah, im fourteen and i like this song and others.. all my friends do too..

  • @Karoke77 And back then old fogies and others with sticks up their asses said the same things about this and other youth music of that day.

  • @Maafa1619 Hey knucklehead, we're talking about music, not rap, that ain't music and it's not something that will last and stand the test of time. You're answer is too simplistic. When you can listen to a song 20, 30 or 40 years later and say , wow, that was goo, then you got something. And there is good music today, just like any other day, but there's a lot of crap also, just like any other day.

  • @awoosoul Rap is well over 30 years old, you clueless, no doubt, republican fucktard.

  • @Maafa1619 First lets get something straight I ain't no Republican, I ain't even a Democrat (by the way what's politics got to do with anything). I am a person who loves music, not the kind that is shoved down people's throats by mass marketing giants who own the air waves and force feed the crap they produce. As far as Rap, I can't handle it, sorry I don't care how long it's been around. Of course like any other art form there have been some good efforts, but it ain't music, entertainment yes.

  • @Karoke77 Society is being dumbed-down by design. 1st thing to go is the music. Creatures in power know the power of music to influence, empower and unite humanity. Especially youth. Past generations have have shown them the most powerful weapon there is *music* and trends. And now, they are using it _against us_. There's a reason essential music programs are mercilessly gutted and dismantled from schools nationwide. And it's not because 'theres "no money in the budget" either...

  • A truly gifted songwriter at such a young age!!...Love this song!!

  • I remember when this song was banned. It was a sign of those times. I love this song!

  • muy lindo tema

  • Remember at this time, many TV shows filmed with boom mics overhead. I don't doubt that the music is being played behind her, but I find it hard to believe that she isn't playing the guitar or singing at the time. This was from a Smothers Brothers episode, and the brothers also played without visible mics.

  • Neat video, As somebody else mentioned the studio version (with vocals) is obviously playing in the background but there is a different live vocal on top of it all. I'm assuming that she's lip syncing to that overdub recording, unless it's live.

  • @Rogert79

oh, you mean the original studio version of the same song the one where Janis sings in unison sounding like two women are singing right?

  • @thefirefighter2011Oh, no what I find odd is that by this time most bands had a copy of their single without vocals for TV (and they'd do the vocals live). This song is a bit older so that mix probably doesn't exist. I don't think she's singing live because I see mics. I also don't think this song has been released with vocals like this. So (I think) they did a special dub at some point either at the studio or just for this show with her singing on top of the record. To make it look more live.

  • u should all grow up

  • @bobo5822hart hahaha, bobohart likes this shit and 'pink floyd'? you're all gayy you said!

  • I am 60 and she is still so freaking hot..the older she gets, her beauty changes in a slow motion mind video and I can go back to the 60"s.......w/out utube this could never happen thank you utube

and than you Ms Ian for so many years of making history

  • @patti1929

great song from 1967 by Janis Ian

  • I love this song <3

  • i can't see you anymore babbyyyy

  • nooooooo

  • the studio version is better

  • @hellonyhello You're joking, I''m guessing, as she was obviously lipsynching to the studio version (as most performers did when playing live on TV in the 60's and 70's)
