There is only one race, the human race. Skin color doesn't matter. Skin color is a characteristic, like hair color or being left-handed. Racism and racists are boring, stupid and wrong. This is a brilliant song and Janis Ian does it perfectly.
@unklewink ... I think nature inplanted racism within us for the preservation of our kind, it has nothing to do with right or wrong. We didnt create ourselves, and niether do we create the thoughts we think, nature did, and does. We can supersede some of our instincts with our ability to reason, but easier said then done.
@unklewink ... What do you mean nature is not responsible? Does a Lion go with a Cheetah even though their from the same genus? You are right animals dont fight because of difference in color. Their instincts tell them not to, that is unless their survival is threatened which really comes down to fight or flight. Now from a human standpoint some behaviors are learned like hate racism, but self preservation racism has nothing to do with hate. We can get along with other races, yet preserve ours.
Beautiful song, beautifully sung about a taboo subject (back then). What a beautiful melody with a haunting organ. Of course, the organ rif at the end was stolen and put at the end of Indian Reservation by Paul Revere and the Raiders. Her other big hit, At Seventeen, was awesome, too. Ms. Ian has a real penchant for writing socially conscious lyrics accompanied with a catchy melody.
Courage. Boatloads of courage here. And from an industry that rarely demonstrated anything other than safe, safe, safe. Janis and this song were a whole lot better than we deserved in the middle of the 1960s...
Thks for posting..in the 70's..I remember Between the Lines.......Aftertones..and Stars...she sure was light yrs ahead of her time..with this and At Seventeen. Great post.
Thanks for posting this. Powerful song, and courageous of her. I loved Janis Ian back in the '70s, especially her albums PRESENT COMPANY, BETWEEN THE LINES, STARS. I really haven't listened to her recent music.
Courage. Boatloads of courage here. And from an industry that rarely demonstrated anything other than safe, safe, safe. Janis and this song are a whole lot better than we deserved.
We did not change the world as was our dream - the machine continues to grind people up at a ferocious pace - but the Boomers did much to facilitate civil rights. Perhaps a future generation candismantle the machine. For my children and grandchildren's' sake - I hope so.
The song was never banned , nobody had the balls to sign her up, finally and i don'r remember who did so, many radio stations would not play it but if you grew up in that era some did because i listened to it on radio.
It's been nearly 35 years since I've heard this song! While the melody is infectiously beautiful, the lyrics hit me in the gut big time because several times in my life, I was like the "boy" in the song and I was on the receiving end of grief from both sides as a result of it. Thanks for posting this.
@Maafa1619 Hey knucklehead, we're talking about music, not rap, that ain't music and it's not something that will last and stand the test of time. You're answer is too simplistic. When you can listen to a song 20, 30 or 40 years later and say , wow, that was goo, then you got something. And there is good music today, just like any other day, but there's a lot of crap also, just like any other day.
@Maafa1619 First lets get something straight I ain't no Republican, I ain't even a Democrat (by the way what's politics got to do with anything). I am a person who loves music, not the kind that is shoved down people's throats by mass marketing giants who own the air waves and force feed the crap they produce. As far as Rap, I can't handle it, sorry I don't care how long it's been around. Of course like any other art form there have been some good efforts, but it ain't music, entertainment yes.
@Karoke77 Society is being dumbed-down by design. 1st thing to go is the music. Creatures in power know the power of music to influence, empower and unite humanity. Especially youth. Past generations have have shown them the most powerful weapon there is *music* and trends. And now, they are using it _against us_. There's a reason essential music programs are mercilessly gutted and dismantled from schools nationwide. And it's not because 'theres "no money in the budget" either...
Remember at this time, many TV shows filmed with boom mics overhead. I don't doubt that the music is being played behind her, but I find it hard to believe that she isn't playing the guitar or singing at the time. This was from a Smothers Brothers episode, and the brothers also played without visible mics.
Neat video, As somebody else mentioned the studio version (with vocals) is obviously playing in the background but there is a different live vocal on top of it all. I'm assuming that she's lip syncing to that overdub recording, unless it's live.
@thefirefighter2011Oh, no what I find odd is that by this time most bands had a copy of their single without vocals for TV (and they'd do the vocals live). This song is a bit older so that mix probably doesn't exist. I don't think she's singing live because I see mics. I also don't think this song has been released with vocals like this. So (I think) they did a special dub at some point either at the studio or just for this show with her singing on top of the record. To make it look more live.
I am 60 and she is still so freaking hot..the older she gets, her beauty changes in a slow motion mind video and I can go back to the 60"s.......w/out utube this could never happen thank you utube
and than you Ms Ian for so many years of making history
@hellonyhello You're joking, I''m guessing, as she was obviously lipsynching to the studio version (as most performers did when playing live on TV in the 60's and 70's)
