  • G's of the G!

  • Rod Temperton is such a genius.

  • How did a white guy ever write these great songs. Rod Temperton originated from North Lincolnshire in England about 10 miles from me. Brilliant songwriter and lyricist. Enjoy!!

  • Gangster of the Groove, story of my life.

  • this is my first time ever hearing this song from heatwave. it has a nice groove to dance to. i wish that they could more music like this.

  • In fact, the bassline of this song was sampled for Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall." I believe this is the original bassline.

  • @Chalenger303 Dang you are right! Anyway this is a nice cut. There dance steps are lacking here. Maybe it had something to do with not having J up there.

  • i love gangsters of the groove. this is the music i listened to when i was a kid. i would tell anyone to listen to this song.

  • I'm 19, and I don't understand the music of my generation...I wish we had more composers like Rod Temperton nowadays.

  • rod! master

  • 3:53-3:39 minutes, WTC buildings RIP. A Pandora channel for the rising from the ashes of the NWO.

  • I forgoyt to add: I love gang violence;well, that's whayt I'm all abouyt.

  • @raydog699 Hope that it may not come back to bite you one day.

  • Trck whutyuyp I wrote Mandy, buyt Heatrocx rockx my all tyme fave I wish I wrotre thjeir hiyts as well

  • The lyrics to the song is so sharp. Rod Temperton knows how to compose

  • Long time Rod T. fan. When it comes to his work for Heatwave, JUST LISTEN!!!

  • Alot of people don't know it, but one of the lead singers of this group, JD Nicholas went on to become one of the lead singers of the Commodores. Anybody ever heard of a song called Nightshift. In fact JD is in this video if you look closely.

  • Saw these guys around 12 months ago @ a Butlins "big weekend" in Minehead - the 2009 version of Heatwave were F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C & were the stand out band from a very good weekend & they constantly had to remind the masses they were NOT a tribute band !!! Great back catalouge which has more than stood the test of time !!

  • @SteveCaftdunt nice 1 i would av loved to be there

  • EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS NOT A BIG HIT IT WAS A GREAT SONG.IF NOT FOR ALL THE TRAGEDIES WITHIN THE CORE GUYS FROM HEATWAVE THEY WOULD BE AN ALL-TIME GREAT,THOUGH FOR ME THEY ARE AN ALL-TIME GREAT.AFTER EARTH,WIND&FIRE&CAMEO,HEATWAVE WOULD BE NEXT ON MY TOP 10 LIST OF ALL-TIME BANDS.ALWAYS HAD A STRONG GROOVE.

  • @MrTrackfreek when ever i hear gangster groove i have to dance, its hard not to. the songs were simple and fun in that era.

  • growin up it was fine when 70s 80s songs like this ruled n kicked major behinds;;all time classics.

  • wow

    awesome song

  • heatwave was one the hottest groups that went without notice. i love this songs and it has a smooth groove. let's hear for the U.K. where they are from.

  • i know Johnny Wilder came to positive terms with his condition after the accident, but I can't help mourning his absence....

  • i love the hook, the harmony. great song.

  • I always wondered why Johnnie Wilder didn't appear in this video. After watching "Unsung", now I know why.

  • This was a talented group and Rod a serious musical genius

  • Watched unsung last night it was great seeing the story of one of my fav group's

  • rod tempton had stop touring with the group a while before that song was mad. and johnny wilder had a bad car accident around that time. the music still sounds so great.

  • Great song this, loved it back then and what a surprise to see a video had been made too. Brilliant, has made my day. 'Big-up' the Wilder' brothers for their great grooves, and 'props' to Rod Temperton' the keyboard player in the group who was actually English.

  • They put both feet and one elbow, in this one! Heatwave had a very distinctive sound, and the harmony, especially in this slice, goes down better than your favorite cold beverage on a 100 degree day! So smooth but so danceable!

  • rod temperton wrote Thriller for michael jackson

  • @dimpsey3 Thanks Dimpsey as stated before he was one of the top songwriters on that album hired by Quincy Jones.

  • The intro to this is probably the most gangster thing I have ever heard.

  • Rod Temperton is one of the best songwriters of our era. Think MJ Off the Wall & Thriller, George Benson, Brothers Johnson, and of course Heatwave.

Grimsby lad I think, or Cleethorpes - somewhere round there.

  • This gotta be one of the greatest and most underestimated bands of the era.

I mean, there's more sofistication here than in most Kool & The Gang Tunes for example. Awesome.

  • Wow, great song, I've never heard this before... smooth , but kickin at the same time. I even heard a little tiny bit of Disco Duck in there at the beginning... QUAK-QUAK... reminds me of a Pablo Francisco joke ...

  • @DancingSpiderman Sit back and enjoy it beats anything you hear today

  • @dal4018 Yep.

Yesterday, I found myself on a major intersection in downtown Phoenix, hopping from one metro bus to another, because my car quit on me last week. So I'm waiting at the bus stop, listening to some grooves from this era on my iPod, it was 100 degrees, but... I didn't care. I got into the groove.

Now I understand how the urban groove came to be. When you realize you're movin', and peoples enjoying watching you from their cars, yeah, the groove baby...

  • @DancingSpiderman Your welcomed sir young ppl of today have no idea what good music is.I'am glad to have been born in another era I would have missed out on groups like Heatwave

  • This was a really great find on a Best of Heatwave cassette tape I had over 25 years ago! Cool to actually see a music video for it.

  • Come Back Robbie Vincent .. ALL will be forgiven, we need more of this kind of music on the airwaves

  • Sorry, biy Ive had this tune since 1980-and just seen the viedo on you tube, thanks for the posting!!!

  • rileyfree u r wise stay positive

  • This is a great tune :)

  • look at me ... i'm groovin' .... nice and smooth vibbin' song .... thanks for sharing !!!!!

  • smooth vocals + jammin' beat = outtasight!

  • They need to featured on TV ONE's Unsung with interviews with former members as well as current members

  • Heatwave is great never got the credit they deserve this music they have is got to be from a higher power

  • Not only is the song bumping but this post gets 5 stars just for the old school NYC video footage alone..Dam,brings back memories of the Hot Tracks

    video show days.

  • i bout this 45 single on a whim at Turtles record store in atlanta Ga and its one of my favorite jams by them i didnt know they had a video for this and its a shame Rod Temperton dont get the credit he dserves especially for micheal jackson(they gave the credit to quincy jones) he was a genious what a shame- says uzipolo-king of decatur

  • omg funkuradio i had a mk3 cortina with a sun strip saying jazz-funk and i was 18 at the time and every saturday listened to robbie vincent great days....england.

  • @lukeydoeslikey oh yes robbie, now on jazz fm did not have a cortina though, but a talbot alpine.

  • Big city music !

  • im just 15 and i still adore this kind of music...i feel like i heard it be4...=)))

  • you did =D

  • heheh lol XD

  • yea im 15 too n I like older music way more than alot of this new bs

  • @RileyFree1 Riley if u like older music would u listen to music from the 40's if so check out two old school cats named Louis Jordan,Cab Calloway.

  • I was just a kid when I they rocked...dam I had some fun at the house parties..50 cent to get

  • Hi,Rod went off to write others like MJ RIP

  • Didn't know they had a video. I loved this song growing up!!!

  • This definitely brings back the memories ! My best mate had an Old Avenger car with a sunstrip on it which said "Ganster of the Groove" on it :-) Brilliant Tune !

Listen to more music like this at Funk-U-Radio - best in 70's 80's Jazz, Funk, Soul, Disco :-)

  • Oh goodness this is real music my parents were so lucky!! and by the way Rod temperton really rocks!

  • just an observation, not a racist comment, but in this video, which looks like it was shot in NY, the main artists are all black. Is this because it was aimed at the American market. Just wonder why Rod Templeton is not on the video.

  • @24368010 "Just wonder why Rod Templeton is not on the video."

Prolly becuz Rod was not black. Bwaahahaha.

2ndly prolly because he couldn't get his passport in time for filming

  • you can hear rod temperton style in all of his songs. just listen you will hear it, the harmonizing especially. i loved rod music He was great in the 70's with heat wave my fav heatwave. okay i have two always and forever and boogie heat. he was a bad bad composer

  • Rod Temperton is a bad white boy. He's a helluva writer.

  • @ranus69 Ranus Temperton wrote most of the hit songs on MJ's Thriller!!!!!!!

  • @ranus69 Yeah man. Rod Temperton is a legend. You can hear Off the Wall and Thriller in these songs. Especially Off the Wall in Boogie Nights.

  • @masterofillusion1 Temperton offered Heatwave the 'off the wall' song before MJ recorded it. They turned it down!!!

  • Respect to you (again) Rod

  • love it, love it, love it

  • Yeah one of the great song writers

  • Loved Heatwave! Rod Temperton is amazing!! Unbelievable amount of awesome songs he wrote!

  • It does sound a little bit like Michael Jackson's 1979 hit "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough"

  • A cross between "Boogie Nights" and "Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough"....so it is a little bit of both, to be exact.

  • It sounds like "boogie Nights" but it sounds good though. He freakin made a killin just off MJ stuff. MJ Good call for Rod!!

  • love this track love heatwave nuff said..

  • Think Temperton wrote thriller...amazing

  • Yes He Did Write Thriller He Also Wrote The Lady In My Life And Baby Be Mine

  • this was the first music video I performed in

  • no quincy jones off the wall but ROD TEMPERTON thank you men

  • great music

  • defo better!

  • Sachmcfw. guess u must be a yank who thinks all things come from black guysin the States

Rod Templeton comes from NE Lincolnshire. He was in Heatwave and wrote a lot of their music.I rememer seeing Heatwave in W Germany when serving in the army there in the 70's. Enjoy a brit who wrote and produced good music

  • Theres no need to bring this down to a colour or uk v's usa thing. I've been a fan of MJ, Heatwave, George Benson& Chaka Khan since school & I'm now 42. I'm black, from uk & always been aware of Rod's ethnicity and his major influence on these great artists and loved his tunes regardless. Anyone that knows about music will already know Rod pened tunes /produced for these artists. It's all about the music. The peeps involved are secondary. One love, One music. Peace out.

  • @24368010 I knew this black guy who had a white thumb. It stuck out from the rest of the fingers on his black hand, and that white thumb was always sore.

    The End.

    BWAAhahahaha.

  • You know Rod Temperton (English Guy) wrote this, and was then snatched to write a bunch of Michael Jacksons tunes. Recognise M Jackson in this???!

  • off the wall eh?

    Rod Temperton = genius...

  • Makes me think of Jamiroquai.

  • they have a sound that ever grows old. timeless groove

  • LOL! gREAT song...so so soo 70's!!!

  • Classic song, I remember this one very well!

  • thats right rod tempton PRODUCED for the group, he is NOT the lead singer(he is responsible for micheal jackson making millions of records when micheal left rod temperton thats when his career went from sugar to shit) this was a great song i didnt know they had a video for this song eithier.... says uzi polo-king of decatur

  • @uzipolo Yeah i noticed that MJ's music sounded like every body else's crap music after Temperton

  • I didn't know there was a video for this song. That's cute!

  • Check out the stiff that sits in the corner...

  • outstanding song. Great one to groove to when you wanted to slow down from the more frenetic stuff back in the day.

  • I never tire of hearing this!

  • Rod temerton lead singer of Heatwave also wrote

Thriller for Mjackson..this whole group had a very tragic end..how sad foe such a good talented group like this,,but there music lives

    on..and on

  • Rod Temperton is the keyboard player (he is a white guy) not the lead singer.

  • The Lead singers of heatwave were The Wilder Brothers(Keith and Johnnie RIP) and JD Nicholas who later Joined the commodores

  • The lead singer took Lionel Richie's place in the Commodores.

  • The lead singer your talking about is JD Nichols he join Heatwave in 80's then he join the Commodores when Lionel left...JD Nichols did a good job with Heatwave not as good as Johnnie Wilder though...The R&B Best ask any Questions...

  • Great song!

  • Groovy grind... YES!

  • that would be a good movie

  • u can have SO much fun ... with me v

  • begining of the 80's

  • Yes, great song and hook. Rod Temperton wrote some marvellous tunes for that time and sounds fresh still.

  • I didn't know they made this song...I haven't heard this in a long time

  • THEY WERE RUNNIN FOR A HELLA LONG TIME

  • Great tune. Upbeat and all-around funky! Yeah, you can tell that at this point, Heatwave and Rod Temperton's smooth sound and style had its influence felt with artists like MJ, Kool and the Gang, Linx, Imagination, etc.

  • @therealsoulproduct NO DOUBT ROD TEMPERTON WROTE MOST OF MJ'S HITS ON THRILLER QUINCY JONES HIRED HIM.

  • (cont') He had gained weight from not being able to move around but still seemed upbeat and encouraged in the picture and from the letters he dictated to his wife Rosalyn to me. Yes, I got letters being in the Heatwave fan club LOL! Ahh, good memories... RIP Johnnie - you are finally free to dance all you want to again in heaven.

  • I still remember my Candles LP. I was in the Heatwave fan club and was so excited to go buy it, I was only 12 at the time and it was the first album I ever purchased, lol! Even though Johnnie wasn't in the video (he is singing with Keith though) I was so happy to see his picture on the album.

  • This has a "off the wall" groove and bass line in the beginning and chorus

  • Sure does. THere is another song that has the bassline to Get On The Floor off MJ's Off The Wall. Heatwave version came first of course. I think Rod just took songs he already wrote and did them again on Off the Wall.

  • Rod Temperton was the originator of heatwave , he also added a school friend of mine to heat wave aged 17 at the time Derrick Bramble how c.o. wrote this song and played base ever since .he went on to become a huge song writer along side Rod temperton Jackie Graham , david grant , david bowie , whitney Houston and most recent the American pop idol single x many more .

Remember (Derrick Bramble) i use to watch him play key boards when i was age 14 in the music lessons simply amazing .

  • @logic98 so you must be a slough boy mate

  • great post

  • what a good song.i read that this was not much rated higher in those days charts.dont know why.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! No lie, I listen to this song everyday. Love the sound and the video. Thanks for posting!!!!

  • One of the best Concerts I have ever seen Heatwave, Sun and Micheal Henderson Live at the Santa Monica Civic In Cali.

  • OMG, that must have been amazing!!!

  • What is amazing, you can totally tell Rod Temperton's sound....(The keyboard player from England). He also wrote ROck with you, Thriller and others for Micheal Jackson...He has such a distinct sound...Check out Groove Line by Heatwave as well..You can totally hear this sound in Micheal's Off the Wall and Thriller.

  • I completely agree. Temperton has to be one of the best arrangers ever..... the particular way he puts all the elements together is masterful.

  • You can hear "Rock With You" in "Love X Love" that Ron wrote for George Benson..what they and the similar Rufus records all have in common is Quincy Jones' production style ( as well as Ron's chords and melodies).

If u get the 25th Anniversary CD of Thriller, you can listen to Ron's interview on his creative process w/Quincy/Michael.

  • I think this track was recorded in Los Angeles, California in 1980 on "Candles" on Epic Records! I have the LP! Keep in mind(be mindful)that Rod Temperton wrote and composed this track!

  • I just wanna say every song should have this sound. Some video's just don't have it.

  • what a jam . . wish i could hear stuff like this in the clubs !

  • Yeah dude.. I think the same sometimes.. Unfortunelly good songs like this, no more !

  • This song reminds me of the time my family spent Christmas in Louisiana. I was in 6th grade then.

  • I was just starting middle school when this came out. great memories! Thanks for posting this video!!

  • Will someone please tell me who played these videos in the 70s!

  • Keith Wilder is singing here (with J.D Nicholas), Johnnie was only performing on the studio work at this time after his accident.

  • Where are the Wilders brothers in this video?

  • hanging out in my neighborhood greenwich village KOOL !

  • This track has an impossibly funky groove to it. You just couldn't stop yourself from getting on the floor if this came on.

Class - from start to finish

  • hey Miger 1. Can you tell me who played these video s in 77 and 78. I didnt know that there were vid at this time . I was too young at the time to notice

  • The band would make a promo video to be shown on a T.V show if they were touring or in another country! Hence Queen's Bohemian rhapsody! :)

  • Thank for the response

  • Your welcome I knew my old age would come in handy eventually! lol :)

  • That's JD Nicolas from the Commodores (Before Nightshift) RIP Johnnie Wilder Jr. No. 2 of the 5 Greatest Funk Bands of all time.

  • Man never knew there was a video for this one! Thanks for posting it and sharing! This was one of the jams back in da day! Memories!

  • That's the shii!! Love it

  • yay!

  • This is the hot jam! Right on...

  • Too bad Johnny Wilder isn't in this video. Must be after his accident that left him paralyzed. If you want to see him do his thing. Lookup Johnny Wilder and go to "Heatwave- Always & Forever." You will see the late great Johnny show singers of today how to sing live, especially with the greatest love song ever.

  • So... I try to compare who is who in there past music videos, and I cant figure it out... Unless they just got fat and grew lots of hair on there face and head... They look a lot like those drug dealers of the early 80's like youd see on a Beverly Hills Cop movie.

  • omg this is great (says a white chick who loooves funk and disco :-) )

  • Rock on White chick LOL (says the black guy) :) What happened to black music? We have no BANDS anymore, that's what I miss. Most of these clowns nowadays probably don't even know how to read sheet music much less play a damn instrument. I miss REAL R&B, Funk, Soul music. We need to bring that back.

  • Yea, Hip hop is the route now it seems. I wonder if Soulja Boy knows what an instrument is.

But you know, its like a pendulum, things come and go, so funk groups will make a comeback in the future. Its too good of a style to just die.

  • outfits are classy, funk is on!. I love the year of 1980 presents a passage from 70's to 80's. I wish I could witness those years=( R.I.P. Johnnie Wilder Jr..

  • That's acutally a keyboard.

  • Heatwave's bass playing is the best out there. real thick and juicy especially in the song "The grooveline"

  • That's J.D. Nichols from the Commodores in this video with the other Wilder brother.

  • Heatwave by far one of the best. Memories back to 1978 Panama when I was stationed in Marine Barracks there. Johnny was in car accident in 79-80 I think this song came out later.

  • Cany you PLEASE post my favorite? I searched for it and could'nt fine it,"MIND BLOWIN DECISION". Thank you
