the dose of radiation administered to the apollo crews was the equivalent of a high dose of x rays. they were travelling through the van allen belt at several thousand miles an hour - not long enough to get significant radiation poisoning.

You are talking about the Van Allen Belt? Professor Van Allen stated that the belt can be dangerous if you lingered in it for a while, roughly 3 DAYS. Passing through it does no harm. We did go to the moon.
