Thanks for posting the video...this really brings back great memories, i was around ten years old watching my dad run his 1976 YZ 400 monoshock. He worked for Bell helmets at the time and belonged to the Yucca Duckers motorcycle club.
@vmchunks I know exactly what your feeling. I'm 55 and recall when yamaha came out with the 250 and 360 enduros. then yamaha took off the lights, raised fenders, expansion chamber, and there - now you have an MX!! known for high center of gravity and pipey motors. Pretty bikes though. Your may have been black with red pnstripe. I use to sit on those pikes and dream on. these films are great. There was also a time when they were cutting the down tubes, adding 2 inches to lower the CG.
Desert racing is scary stuff. I got lost in the desert at sun down and I thought I was going to die. I found are campsite as the sun was setting below the mountains.
I would like to see James, Chad, and all them other siseys that wont even race the outdoors do that........ That was when men were men. Thank you for the clip.......
@LiveinHim4ever Your Dad did a great job indeed. where was this filmed? My brother Butch Laswell was a pro desert racer in Nevada in the 70s 80s 90s. The bike I remember the most was a 1981 Maico 490. He raced with guys like Jack Johnson, Scott Harden..
I wouldnt mock them in the first place cause the shocks on the husky I am working on arent crummy actaully the swedish built there bikes very well and with the best technology of that time. Quite frankly the old husqvarnas are just as fast if not faster than that of any modern 4 stroke for sure.
Agreed and I respect you for rebuilding and reliving some iron legends. My last Husky was a 1987 500 XC. It was a very good bike, but I had to depart with it in 1990 when KTM introduced thier 4 stroke LC4 600DXC. It was the first water cooled four stroke that had upside down forks and disc brakes on both front and rear! Way before Yamaha and all the johnny come lately duffeses...
Husky six speed gear boxes allowed extreme high speeds. Let me know how your bike is comming along. Cheers!
the bike is coming along great I just rode it yesterday and we dont have enough property to get it into 6th gear but shit even 3rd is almost 45 to 50 mph.
I am only 14 right now and I am currently rebuilding a 1981 husky 430 xc with my grandpa he had his husky clocked doing 127 mph on a dried out lake bed during a desert race. I rode it and those things will kick your ass if you arent careful. LOVE THE STROKE POWER!!!!
Who's mocking them, I loved that era of riding, wish I could rewind time and go back... I think life was simpler and easier. Women were alot more fun, easier to ride, less pretentious, less arrogant and no HIV... The bikes were harder to ride, no stabilizers and advanced suspensions. Squeeky old Kernut shocks, seperated the talents from have nots... Today's bikes make dufuses look good!! Bring back the seventies and eighties!!
I was just referring to the part in the video description that said, "If you are under 50 please do not mock the antiquated machinery that we suffered with."
I wasn't born in the 70s, wasn't old enough to ride until the mid 80s. Surely I missed out! All these bikes they are making these days just don't do it for me.
No harm, no foul... Riding back then was kinda cool, the areas were more open, less restrictions and the bikes were alot more like old warbirds then jet fighters, you actually rode them and had to become one with the machine. I wish, we could travel back in time and do it again, no computers, no GPS, no steering dampners, just BALLS... But if you rode in the mid-80's you got a taste of it, compared to the bikes of today. Restore a vintage class bike and go! Check out Vintage Husky on the web...
I wish I had a time machine to take me back to those years. I was just a kid back then, but that´s when I began to enjoy the sport. No doubt the best decade of motocross. Old school. Excellent video.
Haha you guys def. had it harder than we did in the 90's but it's those dual shock guys I feel sorry for. I heard they were all sterile after one season.
No we were still able to have kids. We had learned to ride the machine and become one with it. The bikes of today make crappy riders look good. I have thousands of miles of memory riding my ballbearing Jack-Ass in the Late 70 Early 80's...
Nice form while clicked in sixth gear doing 100+. Those six speed Husky gear boxes ruled the day. I used to love kicking it into sixth and passing YZ465/YZ490 all damn day long!! My Husky ate them for lunch...
I remember those good ole' dead man starts and hauling ass across the dez and picking your own line. I suppose that's why I always never followed the trail when riding in the dez. My firends will conga line the trail and I would click it into sixth while passing them as I blazed my own trail. I sure do miss the 80's. So many good races and places to ride before they closed up so much land in the Mojave desert for the National Park land...Long Live Husqvarna King of the Desrt!!
Anyone who mocks these "antiquated" machines is a spoiled little punk who's had their tushies pampered by modern technology.
This video is great!
