@Untouched77 It's based on the book, Howl's Moving Castle, written by British writer Diana Wynne Jones, so yes, his name is Howl. (From my recollections, Howell was his birth name when he was born in Wales, England, but he changed it to Howl when he moved to Ingary - the fantasy setting where everything in the movie takes place.)
I had read both the books when I was a kid, then when I saw the Miyazaki version when it came out I felt a little confused because it veered a little off the book at the end.
I remember watching this movie when I was like 5!!!!! It scared me I never remembered the name I just knew it was about a case and a fat lady now I find it 8 years later!!!!!!
Thismovie made me cry so hard! And i totally fellinlove with howl! It made me remember of haku justa little (the guy of the movie spirited away) i mean they both are so charming....
I've only seen it in English so far but I'll have to watch it in Japanese in the future. I completely adore the book, and Howl's Moving Castle is a rare case where the movie is just as amazing as the book even though they're very, very different.
I reckon English DUB wasn't that bad at all but some alterations to the script due to japanese sentences are too long or too short everything else was fine I mean Howl was voiced by Christian Bale it just to show you that Disney or whatever put in quite some effort in the english DUB
i always prefer subbed over dubbed but whenever im watching with my lil sis i use dubbed because she is too young to read fast enough and it just makes her grumpy.
The film director Miyazaki's Howl image was exactly Takuya Kimura! Japanese Takuya "Howl" voice with Eng-sub is OK, but..... only English voices filled the film.... a bit sad.. no, very much sad.....
Heyy. You know the part when Sophie was going through this door and she saw Howls childhood? Well Sophie fell into this hole and she was like 'wait for me in the future ' to howl. When she came back howl was there. I don't get it. Can someone tell me?
@CHTrulez its because howl was waiting there for her because she said to wait for her in the future, so when she returned howl was there waiting for her like she told him too
ah howls voice is much better in the japanese version. but this movie and spirited away have pretty good dubs (in spirited away i personally like hakus voice better in dubbed)
@Gigaw00t watching it with the english dub takes away the best part of the movie. the whole feeling of it is different in the original language, and some of the dialogue is altered and made more childish in english. i strongly recommend you also watch it with english subs as well and decide what you like best :)
@d1versify: I feel your comment on dubs is unfair, especially in this case. Though the film was made in Japanese, it's not like that's the only language that can properly convey the story. True, dubbing can omit certain cultural aspects of a story, but Howl's Moving Castle wasn't based on Japan, so there's no relevant cultural insight to be lost by translating it. In fact, since it's largely based on England, the story's culture is actually better reflected by the British accents of the dub.
@DraconicDon I disagree, despite your valid argument - any piece of literature or cinema is best portrayed and appreciated in its original language as was meant by the director/author.
It's not exactly fair to immediately throw the dubbed versions of all animes out of the question. I do usually watch animes in the original Japanese, but some English dubs are actually really good. I watched this movie in both Japanese and English, and I must say, the English dub was REALLY impressive. Christian Bale, Billy Crystal, and Jean Simmons are spectacular.
Japanese trailers & commercials generally focus on visuals rather than plot. Plus, Miyazaki is so famous in Asia that whenever he releases a film, everyone wants to watch it regardless of its storyline. In the US, they need to make it a bit more attractive and less mysterious in order to get people interested :D
I used to be one of those silly kids who thought English dub was better..but now I appreciate animations and films in their original language..not just Japanese ones but also films like 'the girl with the dragon tattoo'
You know what.. i like both japanese and englisg dubbing. Howl's voice in japanese is good but some romantic sentences in english were touching. Besides the old sophie's voice as well as young sophie's voice are good in english... but japanese voices are more realistic. I liked the scene when Howl gave Sophie his ring saying "It will guarantee your safe return" the most. :D Hayao Miyazaki ROCKSSS.
I absolutely ADORED the book, but I get the sense that Miyazaki was trying to adapt the story and make it his own. I think both are very special in their own way. I feel it's hard to make a direct comparison.
kimura takuya was perfect for howls voice, i waited for almost 2 years to watch this movie before it came out here in the US...so i was really happy when i finally got it
