Fantastic gem of a film. I remember my Mum and me watching this on Saturday morning TV and laughing ourselves sick, we'd never even heard of it when it was released. Even the way he walks makes me giggle. Peter Sellers = comic genius.
Steve Franken, who did such a great job playing the drunk waiter, had also played the role of "Chatsworth Osborne, Jr." on the Dobie Gillis TV series several years before this.
i remember when my dad first showed me this movie i wasnt sure if i would like it but it was so funny that i kept quoting it and no one had any idea what i was talking about. one of my all time favorites to this day. blake + peter = epic comedy

Both of you are wrong. What makes you think Rich people are miserable, I suppose you think poor people are happy, becaue all rich people are evil right ? you've been listenting to that kenyan communciat barry obama too much. get it through your thick head, rich people are rich because they work for their money. Difficult concept to grasp for those lazy bums who look for handouts all their life. the truly miserable ones and parasites.
@Situation29 All rich people work for their money. They never give any to their kids, and when they die, they make sure that any money left over doesn't remain in their family. No one has ever been born into a household of privilege, gone to expensive private schools, and not had to work because their family was wealthy. Parasites? Lazy? Handouts? Which circumstance is likelier to breed them? The one where everything is already provided, or the one where they have no choice but to work?
when I first saw this movie in the theater...everybody was laughing so hard...peopole were falling off their chair...and ..after it was over nobody wanted to leave the hall....
and still is good...Peter Sellers... the master....
the waiter's character is irresistible. Become more and more drunk and the mistaken he does are comparable with those of the protagonist! He gives his best during dinner (starting at 5:56) and together form a fabulous duo!
exactly panthr! and even if it does make fun of the indian, its hilarious, oh come on, its fun! nothing racial intended here. In fact this movie is a classic, and its brutally honest hhahahahaha ...this coming from an indian himself :P
I was in my teens when i say this movie, I remember laughing so much, that I cried. In fact I saw it again and again and every time I saw it I laughed till I cried. This was the first movie that I remembered when I heard that Blake Edwards had passed on. We lost Blake Edwards yesterday. The world will miss him. The moment I heard of his passing, I remembered this movie -- and how my dad kept laughing so hard my mother threatened to leave the theater. Or so the story goes. Mr. Edwards would've enjoyed knowing that. May he Rest in Peace.

Birdie Num num....I must say this is the Original Hit that was over looked...but even still Today Holds it's own....this was 1968 Peter Sellers was a common household name... many homes were like that set up...I knew of three myself...anyone who does not get it ...Is not with IT!!! God! You people who are bringing up racial crap are missing the whole point of the film! The ones who are really being made fun of are all the rich people in the film. If you watch the whole movie you will see they are oblivious to everything around them and are miserable. The disenfranchised like the Indian main character, the pretty girl, and the youth are the only ones who are having fun!
i know right. I know Brits offended by Austin Powers and French people offended by Inspector Clouseau but in the end of the day, they are the winners... they are the ones who get the ladies goddamnit!
@panthr3037 Well said. When will people realise that "political correctness" is merely a form of social engineering, another phase in the conditioning of humanity by the global elite. Wake up folks, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
@panthr3037 Is this another one of those, "This here racism!" moments? I guess if real Indian had played the role rather than Peter Sellers this wouldn't be a issue for some closed minded politically correct
people. It would have been a shame because Peter Sellers was great!
Well the main character is depicted as Indian. How many US movies from the late 60s had Hindis in lead roles (even if it was a Brit playing the role). God this new age pc feel good crap gets applied retro-actively to prove an idiotic premise. Enjoy the movie for what it is - bloody great comedy. Gits.
The dinner scene is obviously borrowed from the Laurel & Hardy silent "From Soup To Nuts". The background music by Henry Mancini is nice. The blonde he's sitting next to is Carol Wayne who appeared in Johnny Carson's Art Fern sketches. The man who got a dart in the forehead is Denny Miller who appeared on two Gilligan episodes. Just a few comments.
You're welcome, your Majesty. Something else I noticed - at a party with lots of people, the only African-Americans are the maid and a jazz musicians. Stereotypes were still alive and well when this movie was made.
Excellent point you make, truly a sign of the times. this film although brilliant and loaded with cartoonish like characters, great faces, etc. Those people of color are not depicted as being peers of the main stream. Thank goodness things are changing, have changed! ;-))
