Seeing them at the Americana Ballroom (a little shit-hotel conference room in Phoenix) for Louder Than Love in '89 was one of the greatest shows i've seen and is a memory that will live with me the rest of my life. GOD I LOVE THIS FUCKIN' SONG!!!!!!!!!
Soundgarden is one of the best bands alive I'm lucky that they are still playing int age I'm only 13 and I have already seen them and they are one of they best bands that perform great in concerts and in my opinion soundgarden and metallica are the best metal bands and they will never be forgotten
A voice like Cornell's isnt easy to perform ,even for Chris, on stage. When you perform at that level, the adrenalin , the mic, the food you ate that day, and how hydrated you are really can effect you.
can someone tell me what the 90 shirt is? its jason evermans shirt. ive seen quite a few people back in this time (well, in videos..) wearing this 90 shirt. so can anyone tell me what it is or what it means? thanks!
this is a reply from a maroon 5 listener that i got when i said "these assholes ripped off the song title from a soundgarden song!" please feel free to comment back to them.
@westprice dude no offence by soundgarden sucks and they didnt "rip off" the title they wouldn't know it was the title of another song since no one has ever heard of the shitty ass music of soundgarden. get the fuck over it. (sassyjazzy978)
this was posted on the hands all over by maroon 5 video.
@richardsdead i know, right? how in the hell does someone listen to rock music and assume that some shitty pop-rock band hasn't heard of a band as influential as soundgarden? that riff in the "moron 5" (i like that) song sounds like a bad version of king's x's "dogman." but no where close to that good. moron 5 are studio produced garbage. they did a song called "moves like jagger." they must have paid mick a lot to show his interview footage. and that video sucks too!
@TempBeIn Uuuhhhhhhh....LAYNE STALEY?!?!?!?! He owns Cornell live. Cornell kinda sucks live. Hes a studio vocalist I havent found a really good live video of him yet....this is pretty poor vocally.
This is "poor vocally"? Are you kidding? He sounds amazing! Some of the videos i've seen of them, were at the ends of tours and of course, his voice isn't gonna be great. He's been whaling for months! This guys voice could shatter glass! He had an incredibly powerful voice.
There's no way to describe what this music sounds like in any number of words. Sure, incredible, haunting, and spectacular are all words that come to mind, but Every good word in the book could be and should be used. Soundgarden is indescribably good, and there's a genuine lack of bands like that now. I'm glad we got to experience this wonderful art at all, and I'm very thankful for it's existence.
@jkstorm theres no such thing as singing his song "properly". its his song- he can sing it however he wants, whenever he wants, and thats the proper way to do it. that's the beauty of music my friend.... its never the same.
why does it seem that in a lot of vids from 1990 Cornell is a bit struggling with his voice? Don't get me wrong, he's an amazing vocalist, but I just think he's struggling a bit here...
If any of you were vocalists you would know how hard it is to sing a set like this. These songs are all challenging as is, but you're expecting Chris to be perfect for an hour. It's not realistic. You just can't sing for that long with his vocal style.
are you guys idiots. this sounds nothing like pearl jam or even flow or whatever you guys are thinking. Pearl jam and soundgarden are both great so get over it. they are completely different too.
To you fucktwats dissing Chris Cornell's singing... seriously, FUCK YOU!!! He sounds exactly like he sounds in his recordings and he sounds AWESOME!!! He also happened to be drunk that night and one of his best friends, Andrew Wood, had just died of a drug overdose only two weeks earlier, so back off!
people need to stop giving cornell shit. Everybody has an off night every once in awhile and when you sing as high as chris cornell used to it takes a toll on your voice.
The vocals sound absolutely nothing like the album. Seriously, this sounds like a cover band (and a really, really bad and drunk one at that). Did Cornell even really sing on the albums or was this a Milli Vanilli type thing?
Still don't get why they 'aksed Everman to leave', there's nothing wrong with his playing, or stage performance, he's cool......But yeah, Ben's way better
I can't express with words how much I love this man...listen to his voice...It's perfect...I sounds like metallized...I don't know...It's the strangest fucking voice I've ever heard...and I love it.
Que diferencia tan abismal con lo que es actualmente... definitivamente los años no vienen solos.... aun asi seguira siendo una leyenda. Grande cornell y soundgarden!!!
and that he joined the specail forces after sound garden and now taking philosphy classes in college somewhere i forgot... 1 hell of an exiciting life
@Coldacre Stop being a fanboy, yes he's a tremendous singer and, along with Mike Patton, the best vocalist in rock/metal. This video is good but his voice sounds really thin at times here. Proof of Cornell's abilities lie in "4th Of July" on Superunknown, an absolute masterclass in vocals and riffery!
@venusasaboy1991 I'd said "4th of July" 'cause I reckon it's shows off every part of his range. "Beyond The Wheel" is, in my opinion, impressive but not a great example of how good Cornell's voice can be. Each to their own I suppose.
@WastedDayMusic: I'm with you on this one, man. Cornell was a studio man. He was totally unable to pull off those vocal gymnastics live. I think when they recorded their albums they must have done one song a day or something.
@Coldacre And one of the best lyricists in rock music, 'Hands all over western culture, ruffling feathers, turning eagles into vultures'. Poetry!! this is just before they recorded their masterpiece 'Superunknown' too..... awesome vid!
@Coldacre yeah , except for ..,Maynard James Keenan ,., Matthew Bellamy .,., Thom Yorke .., Mike Patton
Daniel Johns ,., and maybe someone else thats slipped my mind,.,, keep in mind I'm a huge Soundgarden Fan .,. But that's a pretty weak statement .,., specially since this isn't a great performance by him ,.,.Sorry!
@TempBeIn Uuuhhhhhhh....LAYNE STALEY?!?!?!?! He owns Cornell live. Cornell kinda sucks live. Hes a studio vocalist I havent found a really good live video of him yet....this is pretty poor vocally.
@scottelliottmusic Well there's definitely two way to see it. As Cornell has more of a "show" his vocals are impaired due to the activity where Layne almost never moved or brought a "show" and focused all of his attention on his singing. Either way they are still in my top 5 fav vocalists.
@guitarnick914 I can kinda see your point. Cornell is more active than Layne....but his vocals shouldnt suffer THAT much, i mean....look at Bruce Dickenson!!! Ive never seen a more active stage performer (except Angus Young)....or heard a better live voice. Cornell is just a studio vocalist, like Phil from Pantera. Never heard him do Cemetery Gates like the album. Some guys just cant cut it live. Even when Chris is just singing he struggles. Cant hit the same notes on the spot.
@guitarnick914 Just compare the Pink Pop performance of Jesus Christ Pose.....Thats Soundgarden in their prime and Cornells vocals are miles away from the studio cut. ANd hes pretty much just standing there singing.....hitting a few accent notes on the guitar with his vocals, but nothing spectacular. He just clearly relys on the studio to get the album sound....whether its a lot of takes or prep time or production on his voice I dont know, but something is very different.
@scottelliottmusic well you also have to take consideration of the rest of the show, plus he hits much higher than almost all other rock singers out there including layne staley.
@scottelliottmusic It's pretty clear Cornell can't hear himself well over the band in this performances which is why some of it is out of key. There are enough amazing perfromances of Cornell live, for instance the Beyond the wheel performance from 94, motorvision etc. to negate any stupid claim you make that he was 'a studio vocalist' - whatever that is supposed to be. In most cases Cornell is better live. By comparison, Layne's vocals are pretty pedestrian and I love AIC.
@artisthespoonman I just notice a drastic differnce between Chris's vocals on recordings and his vocals live. I dont notice that with Layne. Chris couldnt consistently re-create his studio sound, so I can only conclude that he relies on the studio. I dont know what you mean by pedestrian, but I dont know anyone who sings like Layne and he sounded exactly the same live...not to mention his insane harmonies. That makes him a better vocalist because his studio and live vocals are the same.
@scottelliottmusic Anyone can sound great in the studio given enough time and takes, but I more admire singers who sound the same no matter what. Its more authentic. Maybe Layne didn't have the high range, but he could replicate everything live, so he wasn't tricking anyone with studio production. Thats what I meant by studio vocalist: Someone who can pull it off in a controlled studio environment, but not always live.
@slanderous19803 Yeah...Thats pretty impressive. I retract my former assertion. Maybe he just didnt always take care of his voice well.....He's still one of the best studio vocalists of all time.
@tanvo93 Yeah, I saw that....I think that sounds better. His voice is fuller, more like it sounds on albums. In the early days he hit the notes, but his voice sounded really thin and weak compared to the albums. Maybe its just better sound guys now who know how to EQ his vocals properly.
There's lots of live concert footage that shows him surpassing his studio shit. Watch Motorvision and you'll see what I mean- Rip a Torrent file of it or something cause youtube doesn't have all the songs from that concert..
i always like soundgarden. i like that they got a little less heavy in the 90s because their old stuff started kinda blending together(when u hear all three of their old cds, its hard to tell the difference at times) dont get me wrong, they were better in the 80s(as every grunge band was/is) but they were good in the 90s. chris cornells a fagot now with his timbaland shit.
nah. soundgarden was innovative shit. Timbaland is a bunch of overprocessed bull shit that I'm sick of hearing every time i hear on the radio. I'm really disappointed with what he's doing.
Me too, check my favourites, i was only fking about. Got tickets to see him in London in a couple of weeks. However, he's playing new album from start to finish without any gaps... :-(

@slanderous19803 Yeah...Thats pretty impressive. I retract my former assertion. Maybe he just didnt always take care of his voice well.....He's still one of the best studio vocalists of all time.

@scottelliottmusic loads of booze will do that to your voice haha

@tanvo93 Yeah, I saw that....I think that sounds better. His voice is fuller, more like it sounds on albums. In the early days he hit the notes, but his voice sounded really thin and weak compared to the albums. Maybe its just better sound guys now who know how to EQ his vocals properly.

LOL, Jason Everman. Poor guy got bounced from both Soundgarden and Nirvana before they hit it big.

What exactly happened to matt cameron? I heard he broke bones in his wrists and was incapable of playing anymore.
LkAuYrNtE 2 years ago
He's drumming for pearl jam and has been since 99 i think
Dohdk 2 years ago
Matt Cameron joined Pearl Jam in 1998, after Jack Irons left during the Yield Tour.

I wondering if chris s moniters were broken? was he incapable of singing an octave lower?
jacofp3 2 years ago
heheh...could be, but he probably was still a little wet behind the ears here and didn't quite perfect his vocal technique

Why does no one in the crowd look happy to be there? They're all just standing there like bumps on a log!

There's lots of live concert footage that shows him surpassing his studio shit. Watch Motorvision and you'll see what I mean- Rip a Torrent file of it or something cause youtube doesn't have all the songs from that concert..

80's Soundgarden ROCKS. yes I realize this video is from 1990. but it was recorded December 1988 and released the following year. BRILLIANT STUFF!

i always like soundgarden. i like that they got a little less heavy in the 90s because their old stuff started kinda blending together(when u hear all three of their old cds, its hard to tell the difference at times) dont get me wrong, they were better in the 80s(as every grunge band was/is) but they were good in the 90s. chris cornells a fagot now with his timbaland shit.

i prefer his new stuff with Timbaland...
danspare 3 years ago
nah. soundgarden was innovative shit.
