As far as I understand it, he used ASM for the whole thing actually. HOW he managed to use ASM to change the levels, though, is beyond me.

Well, the level data has to be stored somewhere in the ROM, hasn't it? As long as you know the format and location of that level data (which if I remember correctly is documented quite well), you should be able to change it.
