The 12.7mm had much faster firing cycles than the soundtrack used for this so called dog fight reenactment. It sounds more like a WW1 era aviation machine guns.
No actually it's real fire smoke, YOu know that in air-shows use real bullets. Actually the pilot was Japanese and was strafing to the american spectators. Thanks to the Hellcat pilot that shot him down no one got hurt but the Zero pilot who bailed out a couple of miles further....
i wonder if it is possible to fly the real fighter plane like you were playing bf1942. what i mean is making the loops and upside down turns to get behind the other plane. cause this plane just go straight and up on video
you idiot, sub machine guns in a plane would do nothing, the hellcat had 6 browning 50 cal machine guns on the wings, while the zero had 2 machine guns on wing and 2 cannons in the engine cowling, (cannons were devastating in comparison) not to mention a zero could outmaneuver a hellcat easily, and thats what really matters in a dogfight
Actually, the Hellcat had comparable handling features to the Zero, and could climb with it as well as out dive it. Usually, Hellcats used Energy tactics, like diving on the enemy, firing and climbing out for another pass, which minimized the amount of turn fighting the Hellcat had to do. However, if the Hellcat was caught in a turn fight with a Zero, it was able to hold it's own. Also, you have it backwards, the Zero's cannon were in it's wings, the machine guns were in the cowling.
zero was a horizontal fighter, hellcat vertical. slower zero has tighter turns while the hellcat had heavy armor, thick chasis and mean engine to be able to pull out of dives. the hellcat dive bomber version demonstraits this.
Correct, and also lack of communications has alot to do with many of their losses, as good as the Zero was, even at the end of the war, most Zero`s never even had radios. Which is one of the reasons their Zero`s failed to gain enough attitude to intercept the very same bombers and torpedo planes that got most of their carriers at midway, thus leaving most of their planes unable to land, and instead crashing (And therefore the enormous losses.) they did great in the dogfights before that though.
the flying tigers fought mostly ki`s, not zero`s or betty`s, most ki`s had weak armament, and were slower.. that "ignorant japanese" claim originated from the americans, stated by history channel in dogfight series, which is better source then your undocumented claim. Jap pilot training wasnt very good either.. The proof: Jap pilots following american planes into a dive.. its folk wits nowadays that when ur enemy dives, u stay upstairs and gain the height advantage in order to zoom & boom..
I respect your opinion of the Zero, but I disagree. The Hellcat was faster and could out dive the zero, so in most (not all) cases, the Hellcat could choose its fight. It could also absorb much, much, much more damage than the zero. I would rather be in a Hellcat.
Thanks for the discussion betochon. I guess my favorite WWII fighter would have to be the English Hawker Tempest. Hubert Lange, a Me 262 pilot, said: "the Me 262s most dangerous opponent was the British Hawker Tempest — extremely fast at low altitudes, highly-maneuverable and heavily-armed." Late models even shot down a few MIG15s in Korea that were foolish enough to slow down and try to dogfight with it.
actually the Grumman Hellcat was the final design of a series of improvements designed exclusively to kill the elusive A6M Zero. It matched it in speed and agility, and was much more resilent to damage. It was not finished until 1945, up until that time the Japanese still had air superiority
American aircraft alone rarely had a chance against Japanese aircraft. Only flown in a team they had a chance! The Zeros were always dangerous, it was manoeuvrable and rises faster.
Um, the Hellcat was matched or superior to the Zero. Also, "Only flown in teams" was picked up from the germans. Its a good strategy, but often fell apart in a fur ball.
I wounder how the average "I think were better that everyone else" American would react if the hellcat went down in smoke? But, thats not supposed to happen! I can hear them say...
I do agree with you but look at it this way...its like if you are cheering for the visitors team on your local stadium against your locat team. It would be odd to see a soccer match in Rio de Janeiro Brasil vs France with brazilian people cheering for France
I get your point, and Im not saying that the "were better than everyone" shined through here, but lately ive seen alot comments on videoes of american planes downing japanese or german planes like, "americans rule, japan and germany sucks" And I hated the attitude.
BikerRussell, why do you bring your anti-American attitude to what is essentially an impressive flight demo. Speaking as a U.S. American, I would answer your original question in exactly the same way as betochon. Many Hellcats were shot down by Zeros, and we all know that. The Zero was an excellent plain by any standard. Would you at least allow us a bit of pride for our contribution to the Allied victory in WW2?
Im not denying you pride, but ive often seen too much of it from many americans lately regarding ww2, many consider their part in the war as the better side, whilst it wasnt always like that. So this video was what ticked me off, prob the wrong one to do so at but whats done is done, when I see this vid I see americans grinning when they see the japanese plane "get shot" and loving themselves a bit more, when they were actually evenly matched. I just ran then opposite scenario through my mind.
Thanks for explaining your comment. I do see your point. Some of my countrymen can be obnoxious and ignorant at times, especially about WW2. Contrary to popular belief however, most of us have a more balanced view of our roll in WW2. I lost one uncle, killed flying B-17's and another came home alive from flying B-26's. In WW1 we were soldiers for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I have pride in my country, but I don't think we're better than everyone else.

im pretty sure thats a fake smoke trail that most acrobatic planes use for a cool effect and this is stupid...just sayin

Zero could not out maneuver a Hellcat.

@blownglasslide the hellcat could easily outperform a Zero in a dive
when diving the zeros aeilerons became very unresponsive when trying to roll in a dive, especially to the right.
the Americans found an intact zero in a bog in the aelutian islands and were able to test it in comparison with the hellcat.
so american fighter pilots learnt how to out dogfight the zero.
search Akutan zero in google to learn more
Mast3rDisast3r 2 years ago
Probably thats why Zero pilots did not engage on a dogfight when right turning and diving.

Despite its flaws I like the Zero, it's a handsome plane with character.
