My understanding is there is no money in the Social Security Trust Fund to yield more interest, if interest rates go up.

Dick, I would love for someone to explain to me why a) the Social Security lockbox doesn't exist, b) why Social Security funds are considered part of the General Fund, and c) why are Social Security benefits still taxable. Maybe if some of the wonderful Democratic party concepts are done away with, Social Security might be a little more secure?

There is no money in either the social security or Medicare trust funds. The government spent it all. Medicare is 47% short each year (and rising) and social security will never be able to fully fund itself. I recently calculated what my social security and Medicare "contributions" would have generated if they had been invested like a real pension. The amount was over $1 million, and I'm still short of retirement. These are Ponzi schemes with zero investment backing them up.

Social Security's financing is nowhere near as dire as Medicare's, but that is only because the latter's unfunded liability is over $50 trillion. Social Security's liability is more manageable, but will require a reduction of 20-30% in outlays. If implemented soon, reasonable changes could be gradually phased in, such as increasing the entitlement age so as to mirror increases in longevity.

The trust funds are contingency reserves; 98% of outlays are financed by FICA taxes on current workers

Dear Mr. Morris,

I am surprised that you are being as dishonest as Al Gore and AARP. You know that the Social Security Trust Fund (SSTF) has no "investemts". The Congress took all the extra cash and gave an IOU or a bond to the SSTF. The Government applies an interest rate to the IOU but the cash to send to the old people comes from selling an SSTF bond to the Chinese or Americans. Thus the young people pay twice. The SSTF is already selling the bonds and they are part of the deficit.

I dropped out of AARP 20 years ago, back then it was a spin off of the Teacher Unions. Know what those teachers didn't care about the kids and the AARP doesn't give a dam about the elderly today, Nothing has changed.

Let's not forget that Consumers Union, the premier consumer advocate entity in the US and publisher of the widely read Consumer Report also supported the elimination of the Advantage program despite the severe damage it would do to the American Senior population, a large segment of their constituency. I do not know if they will be joining AARP in this ultimate act of treason as well but would not be surprised.

Dick does not get it. The SS tax is about 15 percent. That is a HUGE tax wedge when it comes to hiring Americans. It is part of the reason the economy cannot grow. Also, there is no "trust fund". Also, medicare is ballooning and ruining state budgets.

Dropped AARP a year ago,switched my medigap policy to Mutual of Omaha and it was even 15 % cheaper. Guess that is the cut they..

An extremely basic misunderstanding of the maltreatment of senior citizens is being made by Republicans at large, and Dick Morris in particular. Under Obama not a single penny of increase in Social Security payments has happened in the last 3 years. For example, my $680/mon S/S payment has been $680 for 3 years running. Excuse? Inflation is zero. Why? Because huge increases in energy and food prices aren't in the inflation computation, yet they are enormous!

I am 74 years of age, and I woud drop AARP in a New York minute, but for the fact that the Medigap plan I subscribe to (Plan J) is no longer available to new customers. I have had Plan J since I joined AARP nine years ago, and as a customer prior to its loss of availability, I can still renew the plan each year. Plan J pays 100% of the gap in coverage. I am locked in and can't get out without losing significant benefits. I am trapped by the Medigap plan.

I do appreciate your video, Mr. Morris, but I disagree that Advantage is better coverage than Medigap insurance. "Managed" care is NOT what most of us want or need, and what's more, seniors pay little or nothing for premiums. Who picks up the tab for that? You get what you pay for, and most patients, do not like an insurance company telling us which tests we can have or which treatment we must accept. I expect my DOCTOR to manage my care, not an insurance company.

Give me a break! Behind the curve? MOST seniors are WELL AWARE of what AARP has become, and MOST do NOT agree that it remains a staunch supporter of seniors as it once did. Contrary to the "what's-in-it-for-me" and instant gratification generation, we spend our money WISELY on the coverage BEST suited for us.
