For those of you that don't know, this was originally video tutorials of an online class. They promised I think upwards of 50 video course classes. I researched it a bit and something happened to the company and just didn't release the rest. What we have as torrents are all that remains and the people that paid for the class never got their money back considering they got less than half of what they expected and didn't get to keep the original videos either. So is pirating justified here?
meh, unbiased renderers like Luxrender, Indigo, Maxwell, etc are far more realistic. Renderman is good for animations because the renders have a cartoonish look and it's also relatively fast compared to other renderers out there.
It balances itself out. It is easier to get realistic results with the unbiased renderers if you don't know how to use renderman (takes a lot longer to render) but if you know how to get realistic results with renderman it renders so much faster then the unbiased renderers and offers far more control over everything. Renderman has been used for many movies other than the cartoony pixar and pixar-esq movies it was used on avatar, district 9, superman returns and the list goes on...
@MrRpgmakerkid Maya is definitely good on its own with Mental Ray, but eventually you're going to run into problems with rendertimes. It's simply not practical to use Mental Ray for a feature film on every shot. The rendertimes aren't worth the quality difference with raytracing.
@MrRpgmakerkid Well, first off Renderman isn't overpriced, it's free (for a 2 thread license with 3delight.) and secondly there is absolutely no question that Renderman is faster than Mental Ray and at least as realistic. I see no reason to use Mental Ray over 3Delight.
lol, if you knew what you were talking about, you wouldn't have said that moron. 3ds max is not a render engine, you do whatever you want to do on 3ds max/maya/zbrush/etc... and then render it on a render engine, those programs come with one already instaled but you can install others like RenderMan or VRay for example.
Has anyone downloaded from any of the "so called" renderman sites on the web? I'm skeptical when I see a $3000+ bit of software offered for free and only 8 people have downloaded it. I was about to order a copy through my university and was looking up reviews when I ran across all these download sites. Was just curious that's all.
I work in 3d animation and have used both mental ray and renderman at work. yes it is easier to achieve photorealistic results with MR, but Renderman is by far a superior renderer for animation in terms of speed and quality of renders in my opinion. if i wanted to re-create reality, i could wait half a day a frame with MR....or you know. snap a photo with my camera.
its true that Renderman can deliver very High quality images. But if you know what you are doing and the look you want to achieve. You can create any look with layer rendering.
I can understand everything but, I simply cannot understand that people don't notice a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGEEEEEEE difference in photorealism between Renderman and Mental Ray in MR's favor.
Yet RM is rated as the best by all aspects and most used :S
I mean I know MR is much slower, but c'mon like it makes any significant time difference to companies with such huge render-farms anyways.
Since I am still kinda newbie to whole rendering stuff, I'd appreciate other's opinions on this what I've said

PRman...but using mostly NURBS models, procedural textures, custom plugins and that particular renderer wasn't even available outside of Pixar.
Did they release it for Max yet? I only remember seeing it for Maya. Also, I'm surprised to hear you say Blur Studios uses PRman...since they have their own renderer, Brazil R|S which they always talk about using for everything they do.
I think this is a demo of a Renderman tutorial DVD series called ¨RenderMan To the Max¨ There is another great tutor ¨DIGITAL TUTORS INTRODUCTION TO RENDERMAN FOR MAYA¨ Btw, for 3ds MAX software you have MAXMAN, but honestly is not so great as the real one that works with Maya. I was a fan of max before i tried maya and renderman. If you can set this software on a linux or mac machine then you see the real power and speed of this programes i think. Sorry for my bad english.
Anyone who says Maya with Renderman is better than 3DS Max is smoking crack. Ive seen awesome work created in both.
If you are not an artist dont expect to run the programs to have them create art for you, it takes technical and creative skills to produce high quality work and lots of time. it really boils down to which is the favored User Interface of choice and that is always a personal opinion. All of the features provide advantages and disadvantages that can be discussed to no end.
blur used mental ray for their latest Warhammer Online Cinematic, but they use max for modeling and xsi for animation or the other way around.
Blizzard has switched to Maya and Renderman, but they still use max for some things like modeling.
No use in getting stuck with a platform, but is usefull to be able to know in which software "you" can do what. If you know cloth better in max do it in max , if you can render stuff in an easier manner in maya use maya.
Yeah I read about those things too. I guess the Brazil R|S team just couldn't keep up with Autodesk's army and their might Mental Ray (which I love so I have no complaints).
The problem with PRMan is that it's not out for Max, and MentalRay simply doesn't do fast 3D motion blur and displacements like PRMan...so really you don't get the option to use PRMan with Max.
Also, buying a new $1500-3000 renderer + new 3d package for 50-100 workstations is a big deal to most people. :P
