I must say, I was shocked by this movie. I am so used to Hollywood making anti-bush and anti-war movies that to find one that was actually putting out positive propaganda was quite refreshing. The movie has made it into my library as being unique for its time. I would love to see more like it. The only thing I would add for future films thrust in this light is more feel-good material for movie-goers, much in the way Red Dawn affected America in the mid-80s.
Are you kidding? this film gives people great insight to both views on the war on terror. Both views were covered to a nearly full extent, showing us what Republican politicians believe and what democratic politicians believe. Also, I must say, that throughout the movie, Meryl Streep seemed like Obama because she stands for everything he does. This was just an astounding movie, that you didn't look enough into. I'm sorry.
I'm not the only one who thinks this. Most critics hated this movie simply because it was so heavy-handed and repetitive. So I'm pretty sure I'm not "not looking into this" enough. It doesn't give us insight; that would imply something intelligent and new to say - all this film did was hold a mirror up to our society, and that doesn't make it good. We didn't need it to tell us what Republicans believed and waht Democrats believed, either.
I heard that it was repetitive too, but I found it not repetitive at all. If that's the reason for this being a bad movie critic wise, then I'm totally satisfied. Maybe those critics, and most people need a different and much, much deeper outlook on what's going on in Iraq, and the entire nation right now.
However, I must say that I'm glad for this video. I gave it a 5/5 just because it gave us a chance to have an intelligent conversation. I can never find people like this anymore on Youtube.
If you watch the review, I mention coffee twice and mention everything from the performances, to the way they were handled, to the muddled and contrived script.
I completely disagree. You said "we don't need a film to show us what we're already discussing." I respectfully think that is absurd. Lions for Lambs shows us how politics are using the same tactics as Vietnam, with no purpose. Tom Cruise as the senator keeps denying this over and over again, saying that we are adapting if we use small forces. It shows how media and the news cover everything up (AKA the ending.)
Politicians and society were already comparing Iraq to Vietnam long before Lions for Lambs was made - if it had been released a year earlier it would have been more relevant, but it came too late and was just being pointlessly repetitive. The media and the news controlling everything was interesting, at the end, and that's part of the reason I didn't give it like a 3 or 4.
Meryl Streep looked confused and disoriented? Was I watching a different film than you? Because I could have sworn i watched the movie that is easily one of the greatest movies ever made, expressing an astronomically strong message about the horrors of politics and how we're using the same tactics as Vietnam. Meryl Streep looked confused near the end because she had just witnessed what the government really plans to do: They're going to do "whatever it takes." She was horrified by that.
Lions for Lambs one of the greatest movies ever made? Are you serious? No way, you are wrong, in ten years, Lions for Lambs will be forgotten along with a slew of other pointless Americanized Iraq films, like the Kingdom, Rendition, and Lions for Lambs. Of course Meryl Streep looked confused and disoriented at the end, yes, but also throughout the whole last half, and she doesn't discover the new information until about twenty minutes from the end.
Yes, it is one of the greatest movies ever made, because it sends an astounding message about opening our eyes in one of the nation's worst times.
Look, we have our opinions and obviously we are both too stubborn to change them. I respect your opinion, however I do think that the movie has opened the eyes to most of the viewers who have seen it. It is one of my favorites, because of that.
Thanks for the 5/5 rating, btw. I don't think it's one of the best movies simply because its message is nothing I hadn't heard numerous times on the news and in conversations with other people. Maybe some people's eyes were opened by this, and in that sense I think it did accomplish something, which is why I didn't give it a super low grade. I did think it had some new ideas and it did present them in an interesting manner to an extent.
I think that this movie was inspiring, and I do think that it has inspired more than just some people. This movie's intentions were that of not to entertain you, but to bring awareness to the American people of why we should just not sit on the sidelines and just stand there and watch as war proceeds. That is the message, and if you didn't get that out of the movie, and instead you were rating the performances of Tom Cruise, then maybe you need to re-watch Lions for Lambs.
However, for a movie to be classified as timeless (and saying it's one of the greatest movies ever made automatically implies that), it must do more than open the eyes of a few people. There's nothing astounding about its message - "The Iraq conflict is like Vietnam; the media has a hand in wars and how they're run. Open your eyes." How is this astounding? Practically the entire country is against Bush, so saying this war is horrible is nothing new.
I respect your opinion, though I do not agree with it.
Yes, you are right about it's message being simple, however, the movie completely displays both views on the war on terror very well. Also, I thought that the way it expressed it's message was very clever.
Everyone has their opinions, and I loved the movie. I am like you myself, quite a movie junky, so I am glad we had this conversation.
There's also something to be said for tact, which this movie lacks completely. It's just basically an hour and a half of preaching. There's nothing wrong with a movie sending a message, but when they literally just sit there, look at the camera, and speak that message, that's just lazy. Oh, I'm gonna make a movie about how racism is bad. I'll just have four people argue about racism for an hour and twenty minutes, and they're just gonna say the points I want to. Boy, that took a lot of effort.
I'm not inherently against messages speaking to issues that exist in society today - THAT would be absurd. What I am saying is that a film cannot simply take carbon copies of the debates going on and claim it's making some kind of strong statement, because it's not. Lions for Lambs was NOT the first time that we looked at Iraq in the light of Vietnam, I'm sorry. And it definitely was not one of the first movies to comment on how the media influences politics.
