It's not that people are letting their imaginations get the best of them. People are taking common knowledge about black holes to a faulty conclusion, in this case relying on an underexplanation. When questions get answered, science trickles down into the public. If we were taught to ask more questions in school, we probably wouldn't go into these panics so often.

I'm starting to suspect that all they can get out of any particle collisions is quark gluon plasma. They haven't shown us any evidence at all of super symmetry, Higgs, or anything. I'm starting to lose my fear of these particle accelerators because I imagine that God has fixed it so that all they'll ever get is quark soup. Although I do wonder if the accumulation of quark gluon plasma is going to pose a problem.
