I remember Spike telling of the time when he was in India as a young boy and his British Army NCO father had caught him in the toilet doing what teenage boys do most. A reflective Spike told how his dad had shouted: "Stop that...You'll have thin children!"
@MrNinjaFish There's no actual audience. It's all staged to be like a live show, but it's not really a live show. Although, they did have people wanting to get tickets for it when it first aired. It's pretty creative, actually.
@UTD111 actually if your going to be like that the Union Jack is only called that when it is on a ship or Tower Bridge in London. The Union Flag is the flag of the United Kingdom, Great Britain does not have a flag as it includes all the channel islands which have their own authorities.
Any way, Spike was a genius along with Peter Sellers & Harry Secombe in the Goon Show and even if his humour was not understood by everyone it paved the way for others such as the Pythons (life of brian cammeo)
The Muppet show was produced by Brits. Americans producers wouldn't "take the chance". So, thanks to the British, we have one of the best Kids shows ever, and thanks to the American hatred for it's own innovators, we only got to see the show in the US because it was cheap (i e profitable) to syndicate something that someone else had put the money up to create.
In all fairness, congrats to the Henson people for booking Spike. Not to many would in the US. Not in Prime time. John Stamos and Tony Danza should be sentenced to 25 years of Hard 'Q' Series. Or perhaps make them light a German match on a British beach.
I had never seen any of Spike's work before The Muppet Show, so I don't "get" any of the humour...what would be some classic Spike material for me to watch?
Just look him up, particularly look up 'Spike Milligan I told you I was ill' which was a tribute made for him by some famous British Celebrities including Terry Jones and Michael Palin from Monty Python (if you know who they are?)
I actually did see a small bit of that on YouTube a few weeks ago. I noticed Dame Cleo Laine was mentioned at the end (she was on season 2 of The Muppet Show). The part I liked was where they read Spike a letter from Prince Charles and he replies with, "That groveling bastard!" :)
"I didn't know you were Lithuanian."

Spike Milligan. Without a doubt one of the best and zaniest comedians of all (and I do mean all) time. Bravo, Mr. Milligan, and SHUT UP, ECKLES!!!

the scary thing is that Spike Milligan had his flag facing the right way whereas Sam the Eagle's flag wasn't.

Erm...the Union Jack isn't the flag of "England" - it's the flag of Great Britain...

Sam: I thought, sir, to drink tea properly, the English extend the pinkie.
Spike: Indeed. The pinkie, the greenie, the brownie, the bluey, and the reddie. Ready? GO!
Sam: Leave the stage!
Spike: Leave the stage? You don't think I was going to take it with me, do you?
Awesome!
