  • DAMMIT, I LOVE THIS!!

  • Reminds me of "Fade to Grey" at the begining

  • I wish roland would manufacture these synths again instead of coming out with the line of shit they do now. I mean, they'd be really rich, so why not?

  • how are you transposing the 101 without using the "key transpose"?

  • Comment removed

  • Seen a few of your posts, love them all. Good work.

  • the music let s me think on the song "Fred von Jupiter" , a german 80s classic of Doris & The Marinas or something like that

  • loving the sound/music!

  • The 101 can not store presets. A piece of paper probably can. E250 is a fair price for a 101 in good working condition.

  • hello! does this machine store presets? is 250 euros a high price for this synth.? i saw one at a store and that was the price. thanks! cool video

  • in case someone wonders. this is an sh-101 from roland and the color is red. the rhythms are from tr-606 which is also from roland.

  • Perfect demo of the SH-101. I absolutely love your stuff, and want to steal all of your gear sadly haha. I also am an avid fan of the tr-606 and dont understand why it gets such a bad wrap sometimes. As a relatively inexpensive analog drum machine, i think it's just quirky and great, especially along side another fatter drum machine like an xbase or machinedrum. Cheers!

  • were do u get one of these!!!???? plz tell me

  • damn....sh-101 or a juno 106...ahh there both bad ass

  • Anthony Rother - Art is technology !

  • I have commented on this video a few times now, BEST tech demo of any machine EVER!!

Just so you know RETRO, I bought a OBERHEIM S.E.M MIDI to CV version!

THE FATTEST Sounds to come out of any machine in the last 15 years!!

  • @StinkySound

    very cool!

    the SEM is fantastic!

  • Hallo herst was heusst das mitn TR-606 ?? Myeine Mail adress ist Insider101@gmx.at

  • i have been listening your music, and i must say i love it, but i wanted to know should you follow a course if you want to play with this kind of instruments, or it comes naturally, i mean if you play sometimes ,you can make progress without any teacher?

    Thanks in advance

  • @misteranonymous12345

I `am not a musician, more sound technician. This is only just for fun. :)

  • @misteranonymous12345 Look up music theory online, learn the notes of the keys, scales, chords, etc.

  • @misteranonymous12345 The best way to learn I believe is to discover things for yourself. If you learn from a teacher they will impart their own style onto you.

Buy a cheap synth, find your favourite tunes, and play along. Even if it sounds terrible at first ;) Stick with it.

  • @misteranonymous12345 Get a teacher if you want to play traditional music otherwise you will be lost in a world of playing around with sounds and might get frustrated. Not bad thing though but it depends on what type of music you want to make, if its dance then you might be better off getting just a few lessons in theory because the more you learn the more you could find it difficult to get inspiration and dance music might then sound too basic to your ears.

  • very cold sound. Reminds me of Absolute Body Control back in '81. Ah the memories...

  • Crazy good. Is this song anywhere else besides here?

  • Nitzer Ebb produced all songs with only this great tool, went on stage and got famous. See, this is all you need! ;-)

  • @goldmundelectronica Nitzer Ebb, my words. (since I just mentioned A.B.C). This is *the* machine for EBM and electronica guys. Still.

  • its sounds good

can i buy that thing anywhere??

  • Do I see a Moog bag? :)

  • the sh-101 will make my (studio) complete.

    great demo.

  • funky town in the begining... i was waiting for the... ta ta ta ta tah... ta ta ta ta tah part :D

  • wow, cool little beat. :-)

  • thanks for that man keep doin what you do, but one day ill be buyin all your shit.

  • cool dude its funny

  • dude i thought this was "Funky Town" haha

  • Nice Sound,

but you need a Table or something ;)

  • i had two of them, both in red, it's fun!

  • i have a 201!

  • i wish i could see all the knobs so i could recreate this at home!

  • hmm... what you play reminds me to a song, but I don't know how it's called :'(

  • it seems like niagara pendant que les champs brulent

  • Gigi D'Agostino - l'Amour Toujours

  • electricity

  • I used to have a blue one of those.

wish i never sold it now.

  • amazing loved it.

  • how did you sync them together

  • 606 Trigger Out ---> 101 Clock In

  • BRAVO! Fantastic synth!

(It was the first one I ever played :)

  • alter schwede... wieviel von den alten kisten haste? ich dachte ich hätte viel :D

  • Hmm, kann sein ;)

  • fuck me sideways!!! i want me one!!!!

  • Hi Guys !

Were can I buy the Roland SH 101 ??

Thanks for all information that can provide me.

  • The only way to find an SH-101 is thru the paper or craigslist, or maybe you can try ebay. This is an old synth and they stopped making those in the 80's I think.

  • don't - it sux!

  • depends what u mean by sucks, it was a big hit in electro music in the 80s, which makes it king, it has very few features as of todays synthesizers, so it sucks, it sounds real raw and fat and dope, so its king, it sounds gritty and dirty and not as clean as modern synths, so it sucks, it depends what u want. some guys want a pretty girl whos a bitch, some want an ugly one who will do anything for him

  • Lol, nice analogy.

  • Yeah, this instrument is a pretty girl, but it sounds like a bitch, dirty and raw ....

  • And the 2009 Nobel Prize for Youtube comment goes to...

  • Check Ebay

  • how are you not holding down the key transpose button?

  • I have block the key transpose button

  • anyone can help me understand how to get the SH101's lfo click to line up with the rim trig out on the 606 or 707. i also have a doepfer msy2 and a din sync plug. if that helps . i can get sequences on the SH that i load to play along to the rim track in the 707 but as far as the "LFO/CLK rate" it still needs to be beatmatched by hand. if i can get that synced up, then sparks would surely fly.

  • that kicked my ass, im buying one

  • Good luck with that bud. I am sorry to say that, unless you have at least $800 to throw down and you are searching in the right places, you will not be getting one very soon.

  • ultravox

  • sounds real nice, looks in mint condition to coll 606 loop . shame the 707 in the back didnt make an entrance.

  • Reminds me of early Depeche Mode sound, the Vince Clarke era. Simply great.

  • thanks :)

  • thats bad ass bro.

  • I had a grey one of those, and a 606... :) sold the 101 for 50 quid to a friend in 88, what a twerp! :)

  • YOU DID WHAT!!!!!!!!

  • sorry... you may insult me now.... I'm ready to take my punishment ;)

  • actually in those days from 88 to 89 (sold in 89 i think) i would invite a friend over to smoke some holy herb, then we would plug in the 101 through various signal processors including an original 'space echo tape device' and and create tangerine-dream-esque stoned loveliness... :)

  • That sounds awesome!

  • very good

    i love this synth

  • what did the keytar handle do?

  • excellent sounds. reminds me of alot of stuff out of the 8os

  • thank the arpegiator ^^ but good song ^^

  • i luv the synth man. awesome gear.

  • 4:56 is SO BIG

its so simple, its biggest strength

  • why didnt you just presss 'Hold' on the 101 and then tweak the knobs with both hands?

thats what i would of dunn

  • i have blocked the button

  • i probably would have "dunn" that too. in fact i might have went all the way and "done" it.

  • ever so sorry.. let me explain.. i was listning to a mike 'dunn' remix titled (dunn for funn)[sic] and i guess it just rubbed off on me. i would of thought you would of enjoyed the 'in' joke but looks like you didnt.

  • sorry for my dickhead-ish comments :) i must have been more than my usual grouchy self when i posted that. peace.

  • he didnt need to press hold anyway, the notes are being arppegiated, the would have played without keys being touched.

  • would of been able to use 2 hands to tweak.

  • wow. ur the man dude. how do u keep that old stuff in such great shape? and where do you find this stuff? i've been wanting a jd-990 since it first came out. haven't herd anything close to it as of yet.

  • thanks

I have bought the most gear for a long time.

  • ever heard of ebay ?

  • cool synth.

  • pretty cool . . . . do you do anything with your music??

    as in gig??

cool cool cool nice synth =]

  • i love messing around with my sh-101...so much fun. i need to get a tr-606 though i only got a old school boss dr-110...but nice music i like

  • looks so fresh

  • just one more, why are the red versions of the 101 rare ?

  • red and blue are limited

  • retro

have bought another mint 101, sold the original one with the side arm why ? dont know !.

but i have a tr 606 as well which is mint with box, case etc.

can i sync the 606 to the 101 ? as you have

    thanks

  • I use the 606 LT trigger out to sync the 101 internal sequencer (101 clock in)

    that is easy and great.

    have fun!

  • i want to buy a sh-101 but i work with ableton and i´m just trying to figure out whats the best way for sequencing the sh-101 . Cv-to-midi converter ? Some reviews about these things are bad..:(

  • Yes

you need a Midi to CV converter like the Doepfer MCV

  • Reminds me of Funky Town at the beginning.

    Very cool analog sound.

  • thanks :)

  • sounds alot like der-zyklus stuff damn i miss my 101

  • This reminds me of Daft Punk.

  • you need a short trigger signal to triggered the 101 internal sequencer

    or a percussive audio signal

  • just a question.. i want to buy a sh-101.. would it be possible for me to sync my elektron machine drum uw with the sh-101 and use the on the machine drum to manipulate the sound of the sh-101 for can this only be done with an analog drum machine like the tr-606?

  • The start sounded like the start of The Weapon by Rush.

  • It reminded me of a slowed down "Steppin' Out" by Joe Jackson.

  • awesome song

  • You know single handidly you have brought the SH-101 back alive. I am very keen now 2 acquire this unit.

  • cool :)

this is the message of these vid...

  • Cutoff/Attack, Resonance/Delay!

    Fuckin sweet!

  • thanks :)

  • you mean decay.. ;)

  • LOL, i'm a YAMAHA boy!

    :)

  • sick !!!

  • LOL< I just had to resequence a small portion of this bassline, it's 4:30am here in Australia so i'll record and upload it 2moro!

    :)

  • Had 2 remake a new channel dedicated 2 my audio. Will be uploading my stuff soon man, take care.

  • That's sick man, not many people can write phatt basslines like that these days. Awesome!!

  • thanks :)

  • U might be interested to know, i'm CuBiCo from the old software synthesizer days, IE: Rubberduck, RB-338, TS404 .... D-Lusion packaged a few of my basslines in their final version of Rubberduck which is now freeware!

:) I Have subcribed to your videos. You are very talented my friend.

  • CuBiCo you are welcome!

Rubberduck and RB-338 - my first software synths ever!

    thanks a lot

  • how much is this one.

    in american currency

and whats like the cheapest synthesizer on the market?

  • Autobahn?

  • memories of visage fade to grey,, great sound.

  • wow...makes me think of Devo....love it

  • this is soo cool. I want a synthesizer

  • You got that right! Analog will always kill digital, vinyl will always kill mp3's, tape recording will sound better than digital recording. Retro-fit your sound, digital sounds way too clean to be real. The past is the future!!!!

  • makes me want to sing a human league song

  • cool.

    another tech question ;)

do you connect from tr606 DIN sync -> sh101 ext clock Jack?

is it possible to get cables like that Din->Jack??

    thanks.

  • I use the 606 LT trigger out. I think DIN Sync and SH clock in will go not.

  • ok. Thanks!

  • wow you saved the best till last there. the last bass rhythm was awsome. dum der dum der dum der sweeeeeeeeeeeeettttt! classic roland synths are the shit!

  • big

  • holy @$%&!!! that is a STRONG synth!

    i love it!

  • I'm looking for an analogic synth. Now I know I want this. I like it and I like this video, specially from 4:00 to 5:00. Thanks retrosound72. Your talent had made me inspire. Really cool !!!

  • thanks a lot for your nice comment :)

  • Nice sounding synth.

  • ITALOOOO

  • How to make retro synth pop... very nice!

  • sounds fricken awesome.

  • A lot like Puppets by Depeche Mode

  • Sounds like that Kyle tune. The dancy, Technoy 1.

  • Reminds me of Solvent. Very nice. :]

  • thanks :)

  • I sold my Red w/grip a year ago, this makes me miss it. Such a fun synth
