I have to apologize about making a comparison between Blackmore and Hendrix. As coreyagraph mentioned, this isn't about competition, it's about playing the best you can. Both Hendrix and Blackmore had it going on. Again I'm sorry, because Hendrix is also an influence on my own playing.
Ritchie was the first to do lots of things with rock guitar that changed things forever - he doesn't get the recognition for being the pioneer he really was due to the flaws of his personality. IE he was difficult ... doesn't help the press love you. We know the truth though ...
I've seen this several times, and it always blows me away. These guys at the top of their game... Lord and Blackmore just shooting genius out of their hands.
Y se me olvidaba nombrar a Mandrake Root y Flight of The Rat...
Lo único bueno de los Zeppelin es el Led Zeppelin IV, Physical Graffiti y Houses of the Holy pero los Purple son sencillamente superiores en la ejecución y calidad de sus temas baste recordar: Smoke on the Water, Perfect Strangers, The Battle Rages On, Soldier of Fortune, Child in Time, Burn, Anthem, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, Highway Star, Lazy, Speed King, Rapture on The Deep... Larga vida a DEEP PURPLE.
In 40 years that I've been following Deep Purple I've never seen Ritchie play as tight and fast as on this track. I don't think he's ever excelled himself beyong this break-neck speed precision. Absolutely amazing..., can hardly believe my eyes..., his fingers move as fast as the flutter of a butterfly's wings!
I love this version the best. I'm sorry, but Hendrix has nothing on Blackmore. I think Ritchie outplays Jimi! You can clearly see that in this vid where Ritchie is killing us with his wonderful sweep picking and super fast lead. He is wonderful to listen to here!
One of the best times of my life in was seeing Richie Blackmore and the rest of Deep Purple at the Filmore West Auditorium in San Francisco where he played the most intense music I have ever heard!!! Was anyone there when Alvin Lee and Richie jammed together? It was God's gift to us all. Awsome!!!!!
hey that;s before 40 years!!! Richie is fast like devi!!! Those scales!!! Sound of that 335!!! Richie is not human he is some kind of superior being!!!
I've always thought this was the most tremendous Deep Purple live arrangement ever. Everyone should see this. The BBC '70 version is THE greatest performance, but I haven't found video of it. THIS is the best video capture of this tune that I know of. I want the whole show. Where do I get it?
I don't think Ritchie blackmore should be in the rock n roll hall of fame. The rock n roll hall of fame is a joke of the highest order. To be inducted among the ranks of some of the people in it must certainly be some sort of an insult. Blackmore is far to great for the r n r hall of SHAME.
Every time I watch a video of this song I see everyone in the audience sitting down, how in the hell can you stay sitting through something this awesome!? I'd be headbanging in the front
An absolutely dynamite performance that really goes to illustrate just what brilliant musicians Blackwood, Lord and Paice were at this period in time, and how well they played together as a band. It's a real shame that there isn't a better recording of this available to buy, the only one I've been able to find is on the DVD 'History, Hits & Highlights' and the picture and sound quality are really poor unfortunately.
@anonymusum love truthisms, do you? I got one, too: Machine Head is hard to top because it was the album on which several exceptionally talented and equally strongminded musicians managed to reach the top of their abilities while remaining to work as a team for the last time. When Lord and Blackmore packed up their egos and ventured on, they kept evolving as musicians, hence the big difference between their non-DP-work and the Purple catalog. Lazy? You don't get where Lord is by slacking off.
As a classical pianist I just can´t help lmao - I could give him some lessons - especially in discipline and avoiding laziness - and that´s another "truth": if you know one JL solo you know them all.
@anonymusum By all means, do. And don't hesitate to keep us posted about how you, as a classical pianist (whatever that is) used your special and superior skills of self control to bring that slouch Lord onto your level of excellence. He won't be performing for at least a year (laziness, you said it), so I'm sure you'll find the time for such noble task.
@BiffChunksteak Eh,eh,eh. The big difference between their non-DP-work and the purple catalog. The difference is Rainbow with Ronnie and Ritchie on top. Better than DP for me
amazing ritchies pulling out all the stops here sweep picking arpeggios and shredding faster than anyone back then dreamed of and to top it off hes using a gibson 335 normlly a jazz guitar but he turns it into something else genius
@aligatorsandwitch72 He also did fusion of like rock, jazz and classical way before most guys even thought about it...like classical music fused with rock? Ritchie Blackmore's idea hahaha yngwie had nothing to do with that lol
Anyone know what the classical piece Lord plays at 7:00 is? I'ts very familiar to me and I can play it on guitar but strangely I've never figured out which composer it is.
man, I love blackmore, but it must be hard for lord for when they do trade offs and such for solos. I mean, blackmore's style doesn't really link the two together. There's so much improve going on, its pretty nuts. haha DP forever!
lots of people saying: "listen to steve morse, what a beautiful chromatic, yazz-influenced guitar he is playing..." so I say: look to this!!! this is nearer to yazz as morse with his "everytime myxolydian-chromatical diddliddiddlidy!!
Yeah I agree, these awards are full of shit. It's just a popularity contest. Blackmore can fucking shred regardless if he's in a Hall of Bullshit or not.
Great song tho. I always saw this one as the "first" Lazy.
@snubbs741 Right on! Those bastards dont know rock'n'roll from a hole in the ground. It's getting to where the fact that your fave band is NOT in there is something to be proud of!

Probably the most exciting rock guitarist I've ever heard - from any era. There's complexity in the ferocity - and a good helping of [psychedelic style] jazz. This bit went missing from rock for too long.
Como me cuesta trabajo improvisar esa canción ya que esta en, bueno yo la toco en sol menor pentatonico. Ese sweep picking es melodioso, me encanta esta versión

Bearing the time frame in mind, this is probably the most impressive demonstration of rock guitar playing to be found on the net. Pretty damn awesome.
I love Ritchie's playing but Hendrix was without any doubt the greatest improviser of them all. Blackmore repeated many of his lines over and over again but Jimi never did. Jimi was a genius and his musical head and imagination were second to none. Even Ritchie agreed that Hendrix was above all others.
Everyone keeps harping on about Ritchie Blackmore, but there's some fucking awesome drumming and rock keyboard in this track. I love Zeppelin, but one thing that really sets Deep Purple apart for me is John Lord's Hammond improv.
Hendrix' solos fitted in all the songs like I didn't heard it by any other guitarist. Of course Blackmore's a genious (of improvisation), but hendrix improvisations make me feel goosebumps like no other..
rock and roll hall of fame its a fucking piece of shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I concur!
Let us not forgot the monstrous, jazz based swing of Ian Paice either.

Is this NIck Simper or young Glover?

Glover, hard to get a clear look at him, but that's definately Gillan standing over the Organ anyway.
