a JIFFYLUBE technician installed a wrong oil filter in my car. Once I drove off, after about 300ft I saw the oil light came on. I pulled over and started smelling like something burning I decided to turn around and go back to the shop but once I found out that the smell is coming from the engine I shut the engine off and got off the car.I walked back to the shop and I found the oil filter in the middle of the road. my car has only 23K on it and I bought it brand new.
Having worked at a 'quick lube' for 4 years here is a tip how not to get scammed.....if you MUST go to any 'quick lube' watch them service your vehicle and ONLY get the oil and filter changed! Then ask to see the old oil filter. Do not be pressured into buying services...for any other services GO TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC...there is a reason places like this are called 'quick lubes' it is also up to the consumer to know their vehicles service requirements....
JIFFY LUBE is the BIGGEST Scammer of them ALL - Trust me, as my BRAND NEW Grand AM (three months old) engine almost blew up - I took it in for oil change with an oil filter purchased from the dealer - They drained the oil and DID NOT PUT ANY OIL IN IT... miles into drive, the gauges for oil pressure blew up. I stopped, checked the oil level in the car, it was all foam inside.Quickly dropped in 4 quarts of oil in it and took it to the dealer to replace the gauges - FAIRFAX VA Rt. 123 X RT 29.
WARNING: If you try a rad flush through anyone it can damage your engine as well.
The incorrect way to flush a rad is with a high flow volume of water(pressure),when they do this they are forcing a harmful coolant from the rad back into parts of your engine that require constant lubrication. i am a mechanic and engine flush and gas treatment does help yor engine on certian conditions. if your engine is fairly new and has had oil changes when it needs an oil change you wont have too much build up therefore the flush will work perfectly, however if youve got a 10 year old nissan thats had about 5-6 oil changes in its life a flush will destroy it!
@crzzymnn911You're correct.. still the best method of prolonging fluid/ transmission life. The only down side is it doesn't remove the fluid within internal passages and torque converter; therefore regular maintenance prevents oil breakdown.
Express Oil Change is just as bad. Before I learned better, they sold me on putting Max Life motor oil in my VW New Model Beetle. Only problem was, it was a Diesel engine. Max Life sludges up rapidly in Diesels. It did in mine, the engine suffered oil starvation, and finally seized up. None of the oil change place will ever touch my car again.
People need to learn more about cars if they dont want to keep getting scammed like this, just some common knowledge on how a car engine works is enough , all an engine needs to keep going is regular oil changes and replacing of normal wear parts. And the fuel injector cleaning this is actually not a bad thing, if u ask me its good to clean the injectors if they "NEED" it otherwise if the car is working properly then dont, most fuels today are mixed with chemicals that do all those things.
I'm a mechanic, please don't flush your engine your just asking for problems if you flush the engine. If you have regular oil changes your engine will be fine!
The President of Jiffy Lube is obviously putting extreme pressure on the District Managers and in turn, the Managers of each outlet. I can certainly see how that could happen. In that case, the President should be sent to prison for willfully deceiving customers. The hard part is proving it.

This is some REAL reporting. This video makes me wanna put a camera in my truck and see what they do (or don't do) to my vehicle. Every time I've gone to a Jiffy Lube for an oil change they always try and sell me somethin like a differential service and it makes me wonder...
I'm really starting to doubt that there's any mechanics out there who aren't scammers..everytime I take my car to get something fixed they bring it back to me with another thing wrong suggesting what I should do. Now chances are I could just have a shitty car but no exageration I've had my car now for a year and everytime I've gone to get my oil changed they bringing up something else that they could fix on it. I honestly believe they create problems on your car so you can pay them to fix it smh
@lyricist91 well guess what im not like that. i actually let my customers watch me do the repairs if they like. and i also do look for other problems. broken vac lines leaks oil leaks etc. and your going to tell me that i cause an oil leak so i can fix it and get payed for it? you sir are wrong. not all mechanics are like that, i have a son. and i would like to keep all my cliental to support my family.
@chrisnjenny100407 Im with you, Im also a mechanic for the past 12 years - I also let the customers watch while the work is being done if they wish. NTB tries it too. They offered me an $80.00 "Power steering flush" saying it was mandatory and my car would lose steering ability if I didn't. I only went there because I had a coupon and never returned. During the oil change the mechanic decided to listen to my sound system as well...I heard it from the waiting area...playing the song I had paused on my iPod, then switched to the radio.
I like all these guys posting on this video, "I'm a real man, I fix my own car" puffing out their chests like they're something special. I get that you need to come here and need some kind of validation for your chosen hobby, but get over yourselves please.
I've worked for Jiffy lube for a year in 5 different stores. None of the stores I worked for did stuff like this. We did offer those services, but never told people the were required for their vehicle. Also MANY shops use t-tech transmission machines not just Jiffy lube, and I've never seen anywhere that is says it could be harmful to your car if you have followed your maintenance properly.
I cant believe this! I worked in an auto repair shop (not part of a chain) & the things they r talking about (transmission flushes & other maintenance) r things that will prolong the life of ur vehicle so i really hope that people will find a trusted shop 2 do those things on their vehicles & not look at this & stop doing them altogether. it would b a shame if jiffy lube not only screwed their customers out of money but also out of the trust that is needed 2 b able 2 take care of ur vehicle rite
lol they need to change the name of transmission and engine flush to wallet flush lol thank god i'm competent on my vehicles so this doesn't concern me lol
I don't think the ability to work on cars has anything to do with being a "real man." If you don't have the skill, it's important to at least have the brains not to take your car to these chain shops with minimum wage "mechanics."
The only way to remedy this situation is to get rid of the engine flush and transmission flush, terminating the employees does nothing to solve the issue.
Shit, even the car manufacturers advise against these services!
JIFFY LUBE, has the "Manufactor recomendations" same way for every CAR, obviously Mitsubishi has the alternator under the motor. so, how is possible every car has the same "Manufactor recomendations" Get it ? Also, Air filter/Cabin Filter you can find those in walmart or auto part below 20$, Fuel Filter Cleaning will burn off your spark plugs, lots of LIES in Jiffy Lube Hope they Close them down along with their STUPID RED CARPET ! THEY ARE FULL OF SHIT ! !
People please listen! DO NOT EVER GET AN ENGINE FLUSH! I know what I’m talking about; I was the main engine builder for Renault racing team for a long time (Constructors champion 5 years in a row) I’m an old man now & happily retired. Thanks to peoples lack of knowledge about cars shops make a good living, especially in the winter when people spin their tires in the snow & overheat tranny (Takes less than 1 min to cook it) Just change your oil & filter regularly, it’s all you need.
I go to Walmart (I know, but listen). The guy was bored that day so he said he would do a full service for basic price. He changed the oil, axle fluids, transfercase fluid, checked and topped off the power steering and transmission fluids, everything and showed me everything he did. Every drop he spilled he wiped up with a rag. Jiffy Lube spills oil everywhere, they rev my engine getting it on and off the lift, and just plain do some weird shit. I change my oil usually at 4300 miles.
I don't care how smart you think you are, you're NOT going to outsmart the engineers of an auto manufacturer. They spent years fine tuning how the engine runs, and how all the parts on your car work with each other before releasing it to the public. If you follow the owner's manual to a T, odds are pretty good that it's going to run like new 300K miles down the road. The executives ar Jiffy Lube? They figure 3K oil changes instead of 6K oil changes is twice the oil changes, and twice the money.
nice thanks for putting it up on here ill show my mom and my big stister and my big brother and other people (: so there cars wont get broke down or somthing like that
Also, if you ever need an engine flush or fuel injector cleaning, its really easy to do by yourself with stuff you can buy at any auto parts store. I have done both for the truck I used to have and I had no problems.
okay, i am completely against Jiffy lube, and the "engine flush" is never a manufacturer recommendation, it's a terrible service that shouldn't be performed, period. However, a fuel Injection service/cleaning is most definitely legitimate and recommended by almost all manufacturers at a set mileage (although i don't agree with once a year...), it will not harm your engine in any way whatsoever, if you would like an explanation, just ask, but i dont have any more room in this comment to explain.
Lets get this out there first. Manufacturers such as mazda have an oil change interval of 7500 miles on some vehicles. So why is it that the manufacturer of the oil tells you its good for 3k on a conventional oil change>? Its to sell more cars in the long run. I have run cleaners since 25k on my car. It is at 340k and runs smoother and better than most at 100k. Its how you maintained your car to begin with. Get the information yourself. This is a dumb video. No I dont work for jiffylube
@Tokensmoe Correction, Why is it that mazda recommends 4500 miles past the oil manufacturers recommendation. On top of that most filters are good to 5k miles. After that its just bypassing the filter. So in all if you do these services at the recommendations of the lube shops your car will last. There is a lot of bad selling in those so you should know whether or not its needed. octane boosts and K&N filters aren't rec. But they benefit the vehicle. So this is a bad way to put down JL
@Tokensmoe The reason why oil manufacturers recommend every 3k is because it's to sell you the product. What Mazda recommends is the best thing you could do to save money and extend your cars longevity. Oil doesn't get dirty, the additives gets used up in the oil over time and needs to be replaced. And the dark oil that you see? It's from the combustion of your engine, the minute soot gets into the oil and will not harm your engine.
@Tokensmoe It would not be in car manufactures interest to have their cars break down; people would stop buying their cars. Engine and oil technology have gotten better over time and can go for longer service intervals.
@SenorAnderson YOU ARE CORRECT! I work for automotive company and it is in our best interest our vehicles run well as long as possible. It affects our image, ratings, value, perceived value, customer loyalty and market share (bottom line), just to name a few...
@forsmers1 I have an 07' Accord, and the owners manual says every 5,000 miles, and my mechanic ( a close friend) says doing every 3,000, because it really promotes Hondas already long lasting and reliable engines. I just meet the two in the middle and do a change every 4,000. I'm not bragging.. lol, it's just a honda-- but I just wanted a plain old car that would last a long time. I would ZAP OUT if an oil shop did this to me.... and thats why you get a nice personal mechanic.
@rhythm78 same here My toyota which is an 06 is reliable although the maitenence light is on I go to Toyota because I have friend there who gives me discounts of upto 25% off
@forsmers1 Yes, Toyota is very good too. Both Toyota and Honda are the leaders in reliability, low cost of ownership and resale value. When I was shopping for a car a year and a half ago, it was either going to be Honda or Toyota. Unfortunately that was right at the same time Toyota was having recall after recall. That was the deal breaker for me. It was enough to sway me for sure. I know Toyota has since fixed everything, and their cars are fine now. Id buy one... not saying anything bad.
@ylen13 Im not one of those fanboys that stands by a brand no matter what.... but do your research. BMW and Mercedes are ranked almost at the bottom in reliability-- as of recently to be specific. They USED to be great cars, but now they have high cost of ownership. BMW and Mercedes might be "nicer" cars from a luxurious standpoint, but when it comes to reliability and lasting for decades... Id much rather have that.
Jiffy Lube gets caught on camera conning customers over, and over, and over, and over again and they never change a thing, they just keep doing it. If you're stupid enough to take your car to these clowns, its your own fault when you get conned. There needs to be a class action lawsuit against them or something so these monkeys can be shut down for good.
i knew about these "engine flushes" for sometime now, ive always wanted to go there with my car and call them out on it lol that would be so fun lol get a lil mexican and be like "naw man i wanna fuck my engine by bangin some gears and bouncin the rev limiter, you know the fun way! not by some chemical that does it for me!"
when are people going to lean that jiffy lube is not a mechanic repair shop its a maintenence place most services performed are additional services besides your oil change, dealers screw you over aswell, engine flushes desolve particles but they replace the oil filter twice to make sure the filter traps all the dirt , dealers deny all these services because it makes them loose buissness even the dealers now offer " engine cleaning".. just because a car brand has their on shop doesnt mean your safe
Jiffy lube cranked on my engine so hard they cracked the block then told me I had to replace it. I went to a mechanic and it would cost me $1500 and take 5 days. That was 20 years ago and I never went to Jiffy lube again. I was so mad I wanted to sue them. I saw the mechanic break it but it was his word against mine and I was female!
@TheAskesis1 Thats the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. You CANNOT crack an engine block by cranking on the engine. You're mechanic took you're dumbass for 1500 bucks. And I knew you were a chick 1 sentence in. I've been a mechanic for almost 30 years and you dont know shit. The oil pan drain plug is NOWHERE NEAR the block. You probably ran it completely out of oil, overheated it, cracked the block, and then blamed it on them. That story dont hold water lady.
its the higher-ups in charge at the corporate offices telling the mechanics to do this, so when they do get caugh doing it then the people in charge can just blame it on the low-level schmuck mechanic, the poor will always pay for the rich peoples mistakes
All the cheating mechanics are fucking mexicans that drop outta high school smoke weed all day and then think they can fix cars... I am an ATRA certified mechanic, and I RECOMMEND that instead of taking your car to a chain, take it to a local autoshop for honest service.
@stillfeelingblue I do all repairs on my car, but DIY oil changes are a waste of time and money. The savings are insignificant and I'd rather give someone $10 on top of supplies to do it for me. Everything else, I do myself.
@surfbum5412 how is it saving time or money? if they dont do what they say that they are going to do its a waste of time and money but not if you do it yourself! im ASE certified and always do my own oil changes.just doesnt make sense not to!
@ZBHampton 1. Well, it depends how much you make per hour, right? How much is your time worth? I'd rather give someone $10 to do my oil...because my time is worth a lot more than that. And, not sure where you are going with the "they don't do what they say they're going to do," but I'm talking about a shop that actually changes your oil, sport ;-)
@ZBHampton I'm so tired of faggots on YouTube without an ounce of logic in their heads. Immediately just saying everyone is lazy if they can't change their oil? Fucking faggot.
certain engine cleaners are okay, I use engine restore which clears out the sludge, and my jeep is at 325,600 miles and running extremely strong. just depends ont he product. I use injector cleaner all the time and have no issues, just quicker throttle response, and better fuel economy, wouldnt do a tranny flush though...think its funny that they keep showing a jeep 4.0 though :)
I believe that they push services, but car manufacturers' goals are to sell cars, not properly maintain your old car. There's nothing wrong with using machines to flush fluids such as coolant, transmission, brake and power steering fluid. In fact, machines are the only sure way to get close to 100% of the fluid out of the systems. I feel that the lube places and the manufacturers are wrong.
Lol you guys nailed them good. I guess if you still want your car serviced at jiffy lube. You gotta be the monkey on the mechanic's back. To see what they're really doing hah,
@satinISsexy Haha, very racist but it's true. I'm not going to try start a fight, but even for my job I would not do what these places have been doing. I love cars and want them to run like they should.
Just say "NO" to everything they say. Why is that so difficult for people? Then all you have to worry about is if they're actually changing the oil or not.
Corporate greed. each one must teach one. That's how we reach one. Take your car to a dealership or an independent shop that specializes in your vehicle's make. Fuck all these prick lube places. Don't be mad at the employees-that is what the faceless companies want-blame the peons at the bottom.
If Jiiffy lube really wanted it stopped, they would send their own under cover people out to test their emplyees. Maybe fast food places do it to test how their people make food. They are fine with the fraud untill they get caught and then they say it is not acceptable when they know what is goin gon.
Speaking as a automotive technician mechanic whatever. I say yeah you can flush an engine but do not I repeat DO NOT do it on newer cars say post 90 unless it's a burly v8 or a v6 or so. If it has a lot of miles maybe but there is a better way to do it for cheap. I've done it on my 4.3l chevy engine with no problems but I know what to do. These guys at jiffy lube know how to put oil in and change fluids that is all. They are not properly trained in the first place.
sad thing is this isnt only a problem with lube places, i used to work for office depot and they had us (associates) always trying to push customers into buying things that werent needed, and should we not meet our "quotas" we would be reprimanded thus us coming up with different reasons for why you should buy the said extras. its the people up in corporate who want to fatten their wallets who decide
@charliemctruth I predicted this 40 years ago when I saw all the high schools closing up "shop" classes. Now, no teenager even knows how to charge a tire! My 19 year old son let his car overheat and blew the head AND threw a rod in the engine, and this was AFTER I constantly hounded him to check the fluids! I don't know of even ONE high school that still offers auto shop, wood shop, metal shop, or even Home Economics and Sewing (my wife took sewing in school). No one sews anymore, except my mom!
@roadyrider We have all of the above at my school. Most people today are just stupid. Thats what it comes down to. Most people listen to their friends instead of getting the facts themselves.
@Tokensmoe You're one of the lucky ones to still have schools that offer it. Most school districts have closed them to save money. I'll bet less than half of all school districts in the U.S. now offer shop as an elective.
@sonylover27 The truth is you're a fugly animal who likes feet xDD had a good laugh on your profile if you say whites are lazy howcome they made almost everything in this world xD
In fairness, I should point out that I have been back to the Jiffy Lube that objected to my lack of a shirt, and now they tell me I can come back, because the guy who objected no longer works there. I say, well, thanks, but ask them, "Why should I come back? I have been going three years, without a shirt, to a place that never comments on it, and appreciates my business." No answer! I see the Jiffy Lube employees, standing idle, smoking cigarettes, on Saturday morning!
I had a 95 honda accord with over 200,000 miles, never had a engine flush or any flush. Only routine maintenance like oil change for the engine and transmission.
@marinelife411 Dude, i had an E39 BMW with 280,000 miles, no engine flushed or any of the such, ran like a beast... never will go Jiffy Lube again... i used to go there for oil changes... damn, that's horrible...
my brother once took his car to JL and they recommended synthetic oils. He agreeed, and he later found out that they used regular oil. How did he know ? He tasted the oil as he knows what synthetic oil taste like lol.
We need more journalists like this. Uncover and expose the corrupt shitheads that scam people out of their hard earned money. My family owns an auto repair shop that's been around for 25 years and if an employee so much as cheated a customer out of a quart of oil they'd be instantly fired. These Jiffy Lube punks are wretched swine that give the real auto shops a terrible name and stigma. I would love to curb stomp some of these fuckers.
lol i love it how the media shows only one part of what the maufacturer's report say they just highlight ''risk'' and then say w/e they want for it what fags and fuck all the lubes
As a former employee of Jiffy Lube, We did recommend services not recommended, But never things that where dangerous (The cost of warranty work on them would cost 1000x more than the service would make us) And we where always clear between whether the manufacturer recommended, or if Jiffy Lube did.
The worst part about this is that those poor mechanics have to fill a quota and are encouraged from the top to make these recommendations. If they don't, they're fired. If channel 4 comes and exposes the practice, they're the ones that get thrown under the bus. I hope Jiffy Lube goes out of business.

I change my oil usually at 4300 miles.
yerboogieman 2 months ago
I don't care how smart you think you are, you're NOT going to outsmart the engineers of an auto manufacturer. They spent years fine tuning how the engine runs, and how all the parts on your car work with each other before releasing it to the public. If you follow the owner's manual to a T, odds are pretty good that it's going to run like new 300K miles down the road. The executives ar Jiffy Lube? They figure 3K oil changes instead of 6K oil changes is twice the oil changes, and twice the money.

Bones12x2 3 months ago
okay, i am completely against Jiffy lube, and the "engine flush" is never a manufacturer recommendation, it's a terrible service that shouldn't be performed, period.

006JoeS 3 months ago
Lets get this out there first. Manufacturers such as mazda have an oil change interval of 7500 miles on some vehicles. So why is it that the manufacturer of the oil tells you its good for 3k on a conventional oil change>? Its to sell more cars in the long run. I have run cleaners since 25k on my car. It is at 340k and runs smoother and better than most at 100k. Its how you maintained your car to begin with. Get the information yourself. This is a dumb video. No I dont work for jiffylube
Tokensmoe 3 months ago
@Tokensmoe Correction, Why is it that mazda recommends 4500 miles past the oil manufacturers recommendation. On top of that most filters are good to 5k miles. After that its just bypassing the filter. So in all if you do these services at the recommendations of the lube shops your car will last. There is a lot of bad selling in those so you should know whether or not its needed. octane boosts and K&N filters aren't rec. But they benefit the vehicle. So this is a bad way to put down JL
Tokensmoe 3 months ago
@Tokensmoe The reason why oil manufacturers recommend every 3k is because it's to sell you the product. What Mazda recommends is the best thing you could do to save money and extend your cars longevity. Oil doesn't get dirty, the additives gets used up in the oil over time and needs to be replaced. And the dark oil that you see? It's from the combustion of your engine, the minute soot gets into the oil and will not harm your engine.
CookJunkie 3 months ago
@Tokensmoe It would not be in car manufactures interest to have their cars break down; people would stop buying their cars. Engine and oil technology have gotten better over time and can go for longer service intervals.

forsmers1 3 months ago
@forsmers1 I have an 07' Accord, and the owners manual says every 5,000 miles, and my mechanic ( a close friend) says doing every 3,000, because it really promotes Hondas already long lasting and reliable engines. I just meet the two in the middle and do a change every 4,000. I'm not bragging.. lol, it's just a honda-- but I just wanted a plain old car that would last a long time. I would ZAP OUT if an oil shop did this to me.... and thats why you get a nice personal mechanic.

@rhythm78 same here My toyota which is an 06 is reliable although the maitenence light is on I go to Toyota because I have friend there who gives me discounts of upto 25% off
forsmers1 2 months ago
@forsmers1 Yes, Toyota is very good too. Both Toyota and Honda are the leaders in reliability, low cost of ownership and resale value. When I was shopping for a car a year and a half ago, it was either going to be Honda or Toyota. Unfortunately that was right at the same time Toyota was having recall after recall. That was the deal breaker for me. It was enough to sway me for sure. I know Toyota has since fixed everything, and their cars are fine now. Id buy one... not saying anything bad.
rhythm78 2 months ago

@rhythm78 Toyota sucks, bmw all the way!
ylen13 2 months ago

There needs to be a class action lawsuit against them or something so these monkeys can be shut down for good.

when are people going to lean that jiffy lube is not a mechanic repair shop its a maintenence place most services performed are additional services besides your oil change, dealers screw you over aswell, engine flushes desolve particles but they replace the oil filter twice to make sure the filter traps all the dirt , dealers deny all these services because it makes them loose buissness even the dealers now offer " engine cleaning".. just because a car brand has their on shop doesnt mean your safe

@TheAskesis1 You're female so you shouldn't even be driving anyway.
fIvndy 3 months ago
@TheAskesis1 Thats the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. You CANNOT crack an engine block by cranking on the engine. You're mechanic took you're dumbass for 1500 bucks. And I knew you were a chick 1 sentence in. I've been a mechanic for almost 30 years and you dont know shit. The oil pan drain plug is NOWHERE NEAR the block. You probably ran it completely out of oil, overheated it, cracked the block, and then blamed it on them. That story dont hold water lady.
ULTRADREW1 3 months ago
its the higher-ups in charge at the corporate offices telling the mechanics to do this, so when they do get caugh doing it then the people in charge can just blame it on the low-level schmuck mechanic, the poor will always pay for the rich peoples mistakes

AznCracker13 4 months ago
I believe that they push services, but car manufacturers' goals are to sell cars, not properly maintain your old car. There's nothing wrong with using machines to flush fluids such as coolant, transmission, brake and power steering fluid. In fact, machines are the only sure way to get close to 100% of the fluid out of the systems. I feel that the lube places and the manufacturers are wrong.
