  • Sonny is one of the best on the planet. He's got the gift, and has practiced his ASS off to perfect it.

Pretty nice to be around to hear Sonny. Wouldn't you say so folks? I just don't get 8 dislikes. What's that about? Oh thats right, this is life, and you can't please all the people all of the time, which is fine.

But I say to you dislikes, a 4x4 wacked up side your heads, would bring you around.

  • I was actually at this show and I've seen Sonny play 6 or 7 times. His playing is mesmerizing!!!

  • He's a great singer too.

I like "hell at home"+ "outward bound"

    they're awsome songs.

  • sounds like jeff beck

  • 1:47-1:57 my favorite part

  • Check out his famous behind the slide fingerings .

  • Great music! I also love his Uberesso. The video from Crossroads is impressive. Watching it kind of chokes me up. BTW,

what is the name of the album you mentioned in your comment ?

  • His right hand wizardry is pure grace to watch... I saw him live outdoors, right in front of the stage (and dancing!), three times, at the Montreal Jazz Fest - and all for free! LUCKY ME!!!

  • That is a perfect recording of the most talented performer alive. Thank you!

  • Cajun Boy!

  • Why haven't I heard of this guy before? His guitar playing is amazing

  • STUNNING

  • sup, who is the bass and drum player, and where do they call home...?????/wynn baton rouge

  • This video makes me even more bummed that he cancelled his current tour date in Detroit.

  • haven't seen this yet, but, wow.......sonny keeps on impressin tha fuck outta me, since, lemme see, river road, baton rouge, i think it was may, bleus fest, hot, sunny, beer in ma hand, and.....singin with sonny from his songs i knew from his cd's.....how many folks know that sonny plays notes, alot of notes, from behind his slide, first time I saw em, I noticed that immediately, while I listened/wynn

  • God damn. This fucker can play. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant! That's all I can say!

  • I WOULD GIVE AT LEAST A KIDNEY TO SEE THIS LIVE..I DEFINITELY WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME CONTAINING MYSELF!!!!

  • Eric Johnson is just as good, if not better. B ut it doesn't mater because their touring together

  • Fantastic video!!! Thanks so much for sharing. Hard to believe a human being could have so much talent.

  • Thank you Sonny! I love your virtuoso stuff, but I also love the wonderful New Orleans grooves, and my kids love the songs and sing along in the car. It's from the heart though, you're a good man! Once again, Thank you!

  • The way Sonny Landreth frets behind the slide is pretty awesome! He and Derek Trucks are my favorite slide players

  • Dumble Overdrive Special anyone?

  • Usually I never trust these "best on the web" titles. This time it's true. Sonny is a wizard and this one shows every bit of his chops. Great Find!

  • There is no better slide player than Sonny Landreth. The guy's pure guitar genius - on steroids.

  • Dude....

  • THIS GUY IS POSSESED BY A DEMON :D hes fucking awesome!

  • this is brilliant! makes me dance my ass off! but the audience sucks so bad!

  • @SgtSlickSleeve: Bobby played keyboard and vocals

Here's a link to some of their early work with Sonny.

  • The Master at work!!!

  • Check out what he is doing at 4:20, and watch the towel on his amp. that is some freakin brutal stuff...

  • i think im related 2 sonny meh last name is landreth 2

  • fantastic, a masterclass on slide guitar

  • I used to hang out with Steve Dugas on Hugh Wallis Road ., They were getting together a band called Machine. Bobby Kimball was there.

  • @1991rsrs AWESOME!!! Did Bobby sing? I met All of Toto back in 79 when I bought my Gibson Les Paul in Hollywood. They were rehearsing next to the music shop and the friend I was with knew Bobby.

  • The bassist doesn't ware pants !!!

  • funny !

  • ok, I'm gettin in line! I respect! :)

  • when i saw him he sounded like eric johnson on acid unreal

  • If I didn't see him playing, I would of thought it was Eric Johnson playing for a second, because the tone and the initial chords sound like something he would play.

  • WoW!

  • I've got to see this guy live, truly an insane slide player

  • whats the name of this song???

  • Wow! Never heard him sound this good. Thanks for the video.

  • Saw him last night at a small venue in Brownfield, Maine. This guy is incredible! And his new instrumental stuff that he test drove was unreal....

  • If this is the devil's music......Hail Satan

  • and he's finger picking... goddamn!

  • Sonny's new all-instrumental album is also underway, with four songs tracked at Dockside Studios in Maurice, La. in the can. Sonny says. Quote:

"When you trade out your singing voice for your instrumental voice, you really need to develop even stronger themes to inspire imagery," Sonny says. "So I'm trying to go a lot deeper in terms of melody and in terms of chordal complexity."

  • i thoroughgood was until until i took a close at this guy.... he effing ROCKS!!!!!!!

  • Love his technique, but where's the BLUES?

  • @resophonicmadness

The piece is a 12-bar blues actually. But the solo itself is not the bluesiest thing. But it's great anyhow.

  • @resophonicmadness

    Who Cares...His technique is amazing...

  • @resophonicmadness

    Who Cares...His technique is amazing...

  • Amazing Slide hero!

  • Killing playing!!!! And for the religion talk, no offense, but nowhere in the bible does it say anything about tritones! I believe the only music that comes from the devil, is the one that has the devil as inspiration. I believe people inspired by God can write any kind of music, after all, they're just using the gift He gave them to glorify Him. J.S. Bach had tritones in his music, yet he said all his music was written for the glory of God and God alone.

  • The bassist doesn't wear pants !!!

  • Come on guys! Get real! Derek is an excellent slide player no doubt. But Sonny is hands down the best slide player I have ever seen! He plays in front and behind the slide! He is actually playing lead and slide at the same time! I have been playing guitar for 45 years and I play slide very well. But I have never seen Sonnys equal, or even close. Derek and Sonny have different styles too. Both are great but I'll take Sonnys playing over anyone!

  • incredible player. he's definitely in my top 5 blues guitarist. no one can use the slide that fluently

  • @bigmoney4635 Look up Derek Trucks.

  • @bigmoney4635 Just to add, I'm not saying Derek is better, just that he's another extraordinary slide player that's worth checking out.

  • I'll be completely honest with you all, Sonny Landreth looks like a way older version of me. I seen him on TV from Festival International de Louisiane, and couldn't help but notice it. My hair is slightly longer than his but styled the same.

but, our playing styles are COMPLETELY different.

  • After seeing this I'm definitely driving the six hours to see him play April 2nd. Bad ass.

  • Wow I had the privilege of taking lessons from Steve Freeman, Jimmy Herring and the like... but man I would love to take lessons from this cat... totally amazing. Thanks AudioHipster Approved

  • Dumble Overdrive Special + Genius = Tonal Heaven!

  • very similiar to eric johnstons tone

  • Eric Clapton has called slide guitarist Sonny Landreth "the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced."

  • Eric Clapton has called slide guitarist Sonny Landreth "the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced."

  • I agree.. WTF has religion to do with anything except wars!!! If music was religion like this then there would be NO wars!

  • @versyskawa

I disagree, if music was religion i think there would be tons of war - have you seen all the "kill Justin Bieber" comments of YouTube... I think music should just say music, and we should just keep religion far away from it! If anything music IS the thing we can unite to when all else fails

  • @versyskawa Music IS my religion.

  • @versyskawa Not Relegions but Resources are the the true sources of war.

  • Would have loved to have been there!

  • Hey Sonny, when you run a search entitled "greatest slide guitar" this video come up - I guess that means your in the discussion -

  • Sonny was on NPR tonight and I couldn't get enough. So here I am, immersing myself in the music. Truly awesome.

    Unusually good quality video, too!

  • 4 dimwits have voted.

  • @JesusIsCatholic Tritones are augmented fourths, not flat fifths.

  • @JavidOnd An augmented 4th is the same note as a diminished or flat 5th. Augmented, in music, means adding a half tone, and diminished means lowering a half tone. Three tones are called a tritone. This interval is sometimes referred to as an augmented 4th, a diminished 5th, a flat 5th (b5) or a sharp 11th. When dealing with intervals, we use the terms "tritone", "diminished 5th" and "augmented 4th". However, when dealing with chords and scales we use the terms b5 (flat 5th) and #11 (sharp 11th).

  • @Smudgefizz In tonal music (as opposed to chordal or other more modern forms), diminished fifth is an enharmonic; technically, augmented fourth is more correct. But since in this day and age that particular set of rules really isn't important for anyone except high school AP Music Theory students, it doesn't really matter.

Basically, I just wanted to try and make JesusIsCatholic look even a bit more ridiculous. =P

  • @JavidOnd Ya, especially when Jesus isn't even Catholic... He's a Scientologist.

  • @Smudgefizz You're thinkin' of cruise

  • @blueterrace Lol no.... Tom Cruise is an imaginary person. He doesn't exist, even though he has a large following of people who are convinced he does, & quote magazine articles, etc... as proof. Deluded! Jesus on the other hand, has appeared in may movies, books, etc... & his picture is everywhere.

  • What does this song have to do with religion. Holy shite...get a grip man. Sit back and enjoy the amazing guitar!

  • @canuckowl hahahaha i know right ??? !!

  • I had heard some of my friends from New Orleans talking about how good this guy was. Then I saw him at the Crossroads Guitar Festival. I about soiled myself! I don't think anyone can play like Sonny. He has a unique style that is amazing. He is a musical genius.

  • Amazing...simply amazing. Thanks for posting it.

  • I love how there is no mention of Justin Beiber or anything on this video. There is just respect for an awesome guitarist. Thank you.

  • nicest tone i've heard for a while..

  • @shred73 Some of this song remind me of Eric Johnson.

  • @JesusIsCatholic

Actually the number the beast is not SIX rather it is Six Hundred and Sixty Six. Jesus was jewish and you are trying to validate all of your points based on religious nonesense. I'm a confirmed roman catholic and your beliefs are total bullshit. What's next are you gonna say being gay is wrong too because apparently blues is the devils work

  • I spot a dumble overdrive special...

  • @JesusIsCatholic

Keith Richards wrote some of the greatest Rock N Roll songs with only 5 strings. God is a superstition.

  • @JesusIsCatholic

The devil doesn't exist. That is just god when he is DRUNK. The devil was made up to make more money in the church. You call other people evil and a chord evil? You are truly the evil one with a rotten soul. There is nothing in this world that can help you. Not even prayer.

  • @JesusIsCatholic

Jesus jams to this music all the time.

  • Comment removed

  • A true guitar god is Sonny. Absolutely superb video. Finger picking plus a thumbpick, and of course the slide. Nobody does it like Sonny and therefore no one sounds like Sonny, totally inimitable technique.....and it swings like hell. Sonny thanks for coming up north to MN so often to warm us up here, all the way from Louisiana. We love ya!

  • @JesusIsCatholic I'm sorry that tritones tick you off. And if you don't know what a tritone is you don't know jack about what is and isn't "The Devil's Music." Kindly shove off and stop giving Catholics a bad name. And Jesus was Jewish.

  • A truely astonishing virtuoso performance of a player who knows his trade !

  • Ha! At first it looked like the bass player was wearing SUPER short red shorts!

  • OMG. I got to see him at BB's in Nashville. The greatest sounds my ears have heard

  • I'm gonna see him and Joe Satriani tomorrow in the Heineken Music Hall Amsterdam!!!

This is gonna be freakin' awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • Finally a youtube video that looks decent. Nice camera work!

  • Finally a youtube video that looks decent. Nice camera work!

  • After watching this video, it looks like I have to recalibrate my "Way Cool" meter; it went from 1 to 10; 10 being the coolest and this dude just hit a 35 and a half. Thanks for the video and thanks to Sonny Landreth for all of his practicing.

  • Listen to John Hiatt's Beneath This Gruff Exterior, Sonny is all over the album, I repeat, all over the album!! The songs are good! Hey it's john Hiatt featuring a great guitarist!

  • Outstanding video. Thanks for this view of an breathtakingly fantastic guitarist!

  • beautifull i love it cool nice respect

  • This guy's right hand is CRAZY!

  • great video, he sure has his own style

  • I agree the drummer does not work with sonny's playing...

  • I love his playing, but he should pay more attention to his context. He should not with a regular rock drummer. He should have a rhythm section as unique and flavorful as he. One of those great 19 year old New Orleans parade drummer or one of the NYC subway plastic bucket drummers. Or?

  • Is that a Dumble Overdrive Special OMG!!!

  • Sonny's got the most amazing right hand in the business! That custom "thumb pick" is way cool too...

  • Sonny's right hand technique and slide tone is amazing!

He is one of the best ...right up there with Duane Allman & Rory Gallagher!

    Awesome video!

  • One of the best quality video's I've seen on Youtube. Sonny is definitely a great guitarist. Congo Square is one of my favorite songs, but this is outstanding. He gets in a zone and keeps going., Great stuff!

  • I have now, within about three weeks, now become a Landreth freak and bought all his stuff off ITUNES and am waiting for him to come to CA.

    He is just awesome.

I have to thank Tal Wilkenfield for introducing me to him. If I would never have seen Tal on Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scotts and fell in love with her, I would never have bought Crossroads 07 just to see her. And then, I would never have seen or heard of Sonny without watching that DVD.

  • slide on pinky, thumb pick and fingers, this is a technique unparalled there's good and there's sonny landreth on slide

  • Come to New Orleans during Jazzfest and he will play three to four nights plus his Jazzfest set. Rock 'n' Bowl is a terrific venue to see him. Stick around after the show and you probably can have a beer with the band.

If he plays on the same card as Tab Benoit, they will jam at the end of the night - now that's awesome!

  • Hey does anyone know if he uses open or standard tuning?

  • How's the song called?

  • @PetieFr It's called 'Pedal To Metal'

  • am not a guitarist, but am fascinated by this man's style, and the stunning results.

  • How in the hell can 4 people not like this??

  • awesome!

  • not of this earth

  • Still no new slide player has come out that can turn it on like Sonny or Ry Cooder in the last 20 years.

  • @backthisway derek trucks....

  • This man is SCARY! Remember feeling like this when i first saw Wes Montgomery. Both do the impossible. I'm convinced Sonny's souled his soul at the Crossroads. I'd swap this level of musicianship ANYDAY for celeb star quality and predictable Blues solos. Hope you live to be 200 Sonny!

  • saw him on saturday at the Crossroads festival in chicago. He went on first and basically embarrassed everyone else who played that day before they even had a chance to defend themselves. Not to say that there weren't some great players there, but Sonny is in his own league. It was AMAZING!!! BTW, this is a great vid, love to see more!

  • absolutely brilliantly !!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome, I cant wait to see him next week. They make a lot of noise for a 3 piece.

  • he's really good but i've read reviews that at live shows he lacks personal charisma.

but it's all about the music with sonny landreth and that's how it should be

  • The BEST slide player alive.

  • @DgoSteve what about roy rogers

  • @DgoSteve Derek Trucks is the best slide player alive!!!!

  • @rjp1102 ha ha ha ha good joke .. keep em coming !

  • @rjp1102

I think Sonny can take Trucks personally. Dereck Trucks is great, dont get me wrong, but this guy just owns..very original

  • @rjp1102 You sure about that? 'Cause Sonny is blowin' minds here.

  • @DgoSteve one of 2 ...

  • wow--thank you doda;)

  • That Cajun kicks ass!

  • There is no one that can play slide guitar as well or even close to Sonny Landtreth, a true Louisiana Heritage!!!!!!/Wynn

  • Excellent!!! THanks for sharing Larry.

    Grandma mary

  • Simply amazing !

  • If you ever get a chance to see Sonny and his band play...Don`t miss it!

They are the best around. Pedal to the Metal!!

  • incredible, the solo at 4.38 was... oh man. mind. blown.!

  • Standard Tuning or any open?

  • @aceyoung777 I think he tunes to open E, E-B-E-G#-B-E, look for sonny landreth tuning on here, he uses it to play major/minor chords with only 1 or 2 fingers

  • the guitarist is the best, he is awesome!! but the drummer fucks it up totally!! really to-ta-lly!

  • Agree with spider78612 - you can even see how high Sonny sets his action. Well done :)

  • wow, big fan right here ! can't believe I did not hear about this guy earlier ! been playing for a couple of years now but still discovering & enjoying all those people who mastered guitar and put their extraordinary personality in their playing !

lots of congratulations for Sonny and all the people in this 'room' (who undoubtedly have good taste)

greets, a belgian '85 born dude

  • awesome,my new hero too.

  • saw him live before ever hearing him before about 6 years ago and as a very succesful professional guitar player i literally had to mop up my melted off face from the floor of SOGO in baton rouge that night. Been a huge fan ever since. Going to see him for second time next week. Cant wait!!

  • damn....that IS badass...

  • Wow, awesome player. Gotta go buy me some Sonny Landreth records!

On a side note if that's a Dumble he's playing then that's the first time I've liked Dumble tones.

  • Just saw Sonny live for the first time and was blown away. Never have I seen a guitar played like that. I thought he was playing a bass the way he was banging that thing. Can't wait to see him again .

  • bassist wearing a dress?

  • anybody know his favorite tunings???

  • truly a unique virtuoso, a master

  • DJD, you can go to bed without any supper. Oh, and don't bother playing your J-Lo CDs please......

LOL! Fair comment! Everybody has an opinion thankfully. Mine is this guy is really good. Oh, Clapton has blues in his core...no argument there.

  • @DJDJANGO1

So what 's your taste then ? Can the blues be played by whites ? i damn well think so !

    Near to Lowell IMO

    Long may he play !!

    Grow up son

  • btw just as a little heads up.... HE'S MAKING HIS GUITAR SOUND LIKE A RESONATOR! This guy has played with Clifton Chenier and Zachary RIchard so I think he can play; blues, rock, zydeco, and cajun well enough. I would like to point out that when you get older you'll realize its not about the musicians age its about the TALENT. If you don't like Sonny thats cool but no need to bash musicians or their style.

  • @DJDJANGO1 did you even listen? It is rooted in the blues tradition sure... but it is something else....

  • just discovered him, oh my goodness, he should be a household name

  • See this band "Live" They are fantastic!

  • so under-appreciated. He should be playing arenas, not clubs.

  • OMG!

  • this guy blows up my brain he literally puts an explosive in my skull and blows it up!

  • is he using the Dumble Overdrive Special on this clip??

  • @rapidtranq yes

  • Thanks for uploading this great video. Musically enjoyable and technically educational !

  • @homeboystevea I agree Sonny is awesome! Since you enjoy Sonny, you should check out SteelHand Bill, awesome slide and harp.

  • I saw Sonny open for Robben Ford once and it was fantastic to say the least. Sonny is the man!

  • I had my doubts when I saw "Best Video" but you happily proved me wrong. Excellent video of probably the best guitar player today. Thank You

  • Sonny's been my new hero about a year now. He's great, no dispute, but a special thanks to whoever shot this clip, a photographer and a guitar player no doubt. No zoom in to Sonny's nose or the top of somebody's head, just both hands during the lead and pan out at the end. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your kind comments.

Sonny plays so well that he raises the bar for even videotaping him.

  • @spider78612 Sonny's awesome, and I agree - this is how you shoot a guitar player. You show their hands...
