It was just announced that the role of the head hijacker, originally played by Robert Shaw in the original film, will be played by John Travolta in the remake. Denzel Washington will reprise the role of the chief detective of security for the NYC subway, originally played by Walter Matthau. The remake will be directed by Tony Scott ('Crimson Tide', 'Man On Fire', Deja Vu'), and is set for a 2009 release.

It has been announced that this film is going to be remade with Denzel Washinton in the role originally played by Walter Matthau, and Tony Scott ('Crimson Tide', 'Man On Fire', 'Deja Vu') directing. A release date has yet to be set.

Spielberg was originally going to direct this movie instead of Jaws, but he decided to do Jaws instead. I'm grateful for his decision.
