  • It makes a high pitched sound because its a regenerative AC motor. Basically current that is wasted by normal motors is mostly recovered here. It's similar to what an AC motor does on a subway train.

  • Are there really 34 elevators? Nice elevator though.

  • I know of 21 elevators in that complex, 4 mall parking, 4 for SFU parking, 2 in Zellers, 2 in the mall, 2 low rise elevators at the SFU campus, 4 hi-rise at SFU, 1 service elevator at SFU, one secure at SFU, one lobby shuttle in SFU. Both SFU and the mall are in the same complex so it's possible that there are 34 or more elevators when you factor in freight and service elevators that would be hidden, also the community centre next door might be considered part of that complex as well.
