they all sound really good and unified, but the style and musicality is wrong in a lot of places. it's not always about getting every note and rhythm exactly precise, it's about making music out of the tune.
@maestrojimbo details are important, but what's really important is the big picture. their playing was too rigid and structured in my opinion, and i couldn't derive the true intent of the piece from this performance alone. but that's just me, i'm a douchebag judge so don't mind me.
Blame the conductor for the flabby tempi in places - most of it is good, but lacking in sense of direction. Check out the Cass Tech H S Band version I recently posted.
@maestrojimbo as has been overstated already, technicality and precision are fantastic for this group at this level; HOWEVER, the musicality is lacking... musicality invests the composer's intention and vision for the piece which is MORE than merely playing the notes set down on a piece of paper - and again, what would another judge know from technicality/precision versus musicality?
@kabalahman You're preaching to the choir! I've been a professional musician for 40 years - master's from Juilliard. This is a High School Band, not NY Philharmonic. They are at their best in the fast sections - driving and exciting. In slower passages (horn solo, woodwind solos) he's just time-beating. There's no shape in the phrasing, no music. However, these are youngsters and overall they do a good job playing this challenging piece. Looks like you're into new age.mostly?
In 1987 I went to japan on a concert tour with my college band, and we played a joint concert with this ensemble in their auditorium in Tenri. They were phenomenal. Not only is the ensemble and musicality excellent, but there is incredible depth of talent - even the players all the way at the back of the section are playing ALL the right notes!
This performance was beautiful, trumpets and french horns all sounded like one. It was beautiful. Amazing crescendos, and tone and intonation. What a perfect performance.
A college band would be very proud of this performance. As I said before you can hear every note in the articulations, even at the tempo they are taking it. They also have control over both the intonation in the slower quiet passages as well tone quality in the faster passages
as a former clarinet player I was thinking the same thing..the clearness of that articulation is incredible. I have never heard a college band play this at this speed or this cleanly...and these are high school students!!!
Yes..as I read they have some type of time limit so they have to perform in a window of time or they lose points in the competition
Everytime I listen to this recording I am amazed at the maturity of the sound these kids have. Even at this tempo...which is the fastest I have heard a high play it....it doesn't have the "frantic" sound to it that a lot of high schools have in the faster passages. And I can hear every note of the articulations in the woodwinds
As a wood wind player...I am amazed at this performance. I can hear every part of the articulations. Even at the speed they are playing , in the beginning, its very clean and they are maintaining the tone quality and intonation very well
gr8 performance! I played this back in the day, and I know the score very well. Gr8 interpretation too. At 2:42 there should be triplets in the brass, but were played as 2 16th's in that ascending line, but I remember it was difficult to get them pronounced clearly. Wonderful performance!
Yeah my high school band is playing this and hearing this makes me want to cry because they are sooooo amazing and we well......

As a trumpet player of nearly a decade, I am EXTREMELY impressed with the tonality and blending of the trumpet section! It's really quite nice.
I do agree with another comment here that they are very precise, but maybe lacking a bit of the musicality?

Near perfection. A great performance by these outstanding young men and women. Really a great work and a great performance.

they played with such precision and intonation that it sounded as though there was only 1 of each instrument!

That's a strange looking bass sax. I've never seen one with a narrow bell up that high. Awesome performance.

Fascinating arrangement for band - it really works. And a very fine high school band to boot.
