I drive past midway a lot. And still don't understand how a big aircraft such as a 757 could takeoff on midways short runways. The 737s from southwest barely miss the airport fence taking off.
Midway has one of the shortest runways in the U.S. It took about 20 seconds from the time this plane started flying down the runway to lift off. Other airports videos the same scenario takes about 30 - 40 seconds.
I miss you, ATA. This video bring back a lot of memories - growing up in Chicago (2 miles from Midway) and working for ATA when I turned 18! Nothing could be better than a dawn takeoff on a warm summer morning from MDW on an ATA 757. :)
I will absolutely miss you ATA, I this is heart retching, I've watched TWA, AWA, DLX, Song, Independence, and Aloha go, I hope there is not another airline to leave the skies other than airTran.
I flew on a ATA 757 from MDW to LAX as well back in 1995. Very short takeoff run-as MDW's longest runway is only 6500 ft. long! 757s are the largest aircraft that can safely takeoff and land at MDW as they have an excellent power to weight ratio(pilots nicknamed this aircraft the "Hot Rod" for this reason).
I completely believe you man but do remember that the L1011 and 757 both use the same engines in the ATA fleet (The RB211), hence the same take off sound
this aircraft is a Boeing 757-200. I flew in one of them from MDW to LAX back in 2002. i sat next to the engine, dont believe me, check out airlinersdotnet and look at all the ata ariplanes engine and see for yourslef...
I was a flight attendant for 4 years with ATA, the chimes are called "3 bells", They are a signal to the cabin crew from the flight deck that takeoff clearance has been given and flight attendants should be in thier jumpseats, buckled up.
It cannot be a -300. For a start, this aircraft is obviously painted in ATA's palm tree livery (1996-2001) and non of the 3 737-300's that ATA bought were painted in this livery. Are you sure that this cannot be a Tristar charter. Remember that ATA charter out their L1011 fleet to the millitary nowadays.
@gokumalo As others have pointed out, 757's powered by Rolls Royce engines have a very distinctive sound upon take off roll and initial climb out, which is present in this video. Definately not a 733 (or any 737 variant) int this video.
Outstanding video - Midway is landlocked so there's not much room for expansion; when those jets take off, they take off - don't have your Starbucks on your lap, guys when the plane starts climbing. . .
Yeah, I knew it would be a light fuel load for that route, and with only 6,522 feet of runway it would be a pretty good gallop. Now knowing only 84 pax aboard, it's no wonder you shot off 31C! At the initial pull back to climb thrust (at about 1:28 into the vid), the sound from those Rolls-Royce turbofans was still well above what I typically have heard on most others at takeoff thrust. Giddyup!
I was once in a ATA-727 taking off from Midway field. God I wish I had video of that. At the start of the runway, the pilot locked the brakes, firewalled the engines, and just as the tail started to gyrate, let go of the brakes...
It was like someone punched the back of my seat!
I started counting one-onethousand two-onethousand, and at 15 seconds, we were off the runway and climbing.
Awesome! Even those old three-holers could get up and run. Hope there was a good head wind, otherwise I understand that firewalling a 727 without forward motion can lead to compressor stall on #2 engine. It's kind of fun to hear that, though. ;)
Might add, that all the way to Denver, I was watching this annoying little tear in the wing, to make sure it wasn't spreading. Only about 2 inches, and it LOOKED like it was patched by something, but I don't trust technology, I just love it.
Good thing about being a big dude, you always get the exit row, like it or not, so you can manhandle the emergency exit door. Bad thing is, you are in front of the stampede if there should ever be an emergency, and you don't get to see much terrain.
Haha, yeah indeed I was very surprised too at the acceleration. The video doesn't nearly do it justice, but when those things get full power - they freakin' gallop! :)
Keep in mind though, this was from MDW-LGA, so not too much fuel, and only 84 seats filled...so it was pretty light.
Wow! That has to be the highest power setting and shortest takeoff roll I've ever witnessed with a 757. And did I hear you say, "Holy Crap!" when you noticed the acceleration? <smile> I'm envious! Thank you for the videos.

I love the buzzsaw noise!! I hate the fact that the new GEnX engines will nearly silent the buzzsaw scream.
