The game is amazing like all SSI Gold Box engine games released originally for DOS, Commodore, and Amiga. The graphics weren't very impressive even by the standards of the original hardware they were released on, but they made up for it with detailed writing about the scenes and encounters and multiple courses of action which often made the world seem richer than even the most graphically detailed 3D games today. It's worth noting that only one of the two GB BR games was released on Megadrive.
I know exactly how you feel about this game. The infestation part at the very beginning, like kidcouscous said, really does suck you in. And Since the classes improved different skills which everyone could use, it allowed a lot of customization and experimenting.
Me and my friend used to play it, and the spaceship combat was intense. It was so fun when you got to the point where you could fly around and really rack up some money to buy the great equipment you could find on the random planets.
I loved this game as a kid so glad I got it working on emulator on the Wii no less (homebrew) It gets really tactical later on when your fighting on the planets. Funny I found the amiga version very disapointing compared to mega drive.
spot on observation about this being an early prototype for Mass Effect. This game is legendary. I rented this game from a grocery store with my chore money as a kid until I finally beat it one glorious summer. I remember actually being a bit creeped out by the derelict ship with the infestation, and I was sucked right in. I felt the combat was very clever for the time. And the comment about Starflight---another gem, that--I would think anyone who enjoyed Starflight will dig this too.
have u played starflight?? made by the same creators i believe ... one of my all time favorite games. after watching this... i will be buying this game, thanks :-)

I absolutely loved this game, I played pretty much every game on the MD and this holds probably the best memories for me of any of them.

very nice review
tried this back on the Amiga 500, never knew they ported it to the Megadrive as well
part of the Goldbox engine series, but in that "console" style
I just sniffed out a copy in my local retro/game shop, for about 10 Euro; might give this one a try

The game looks very basic but kind of reminds me of x-com enemy unknown in some ways .....
