I hate to show my ignorance but I didn't know anything about Bob Young (have since googled and see he is a software entrepreneur - Red Hat/Lulu). Anyway the video shows he has a pretty logical and upbeat way of ensuring he has the best people in his team.....providing interesting projects for them to work on and appreciating that your business is actually what you staff make it.
I agree businessexpertsmatt, there is no fun in doing something you dislike. I am pretty sure that all of us can relate to your comment. I once worked 6 hours a day in a juice bar where there were about 6 customers a day. As you can imagine, I wasn't there long!!
Bob is so right! Let me take this video and show it to all those bad bosses that we have worked with in the past... this is self explanatory - I don't know why some people just don't get it!
I have worked for some extremely good employers who have shown they value there employees. I have also seen the other side where this hasn't happened and it didn't make for a fun place to work. I agree totally with Mummybynight, it would be nice for every employer to value their best people!
I have been involved in recruiting in the past. I think that there are many shortcuts being made in this area and it is costing businesses a lot of money.
Bob's advice is very true. I find that many businesses aren't investing enough time in their employees these days and worrying more about sales and profits.
Its pretty common sense stuff. Lots of people go off the board, and hire pple for lots of other reasons rather than someones passion. Look at how many people bullshit on their cvs.
Bob is so right about the fact that one should work closely with their staff to understand what motivates them.If your staff enjoys what they are doing then they will try to go the extra mile to excel at that job. One of my past bosses was very employee focused and as a result we all used to enjoy working for him and never minded doing extra hours when required. I wish more companies did that.
I always have a rule. Always try and hire people smarter than you. At the end of the day, they have to take over jobs you are probably doing yourself, and for the sake building on success, whatever the business ws doing before has to continually improve.

Visually less distracting once focused in onhead and shoulders, understood message but could have been more succinct, came over well as leader

Having a nice guy presenting makes such a difference, he comes across very well and friendly, didnt feel as though I was being dictated too!

Makes sense to me. I had hoped he might say something a little revolutionary too but maybe it's as simple as that...

Informative and very low key. Yes, he is modest.

I defiantly agree that flunking a project and jobs that just drag on really makes your pay cheque more and more important.

He is so right, it's a shame that so many managers can't put this theory into practice!
alices7654 3 years ago
alices7654, this is because most managers don't understand the key impact that each and every staff member can make on a business

Completely agree with this comments I wish every employer valued their best people as much as him very few seem to!

well, it's so common for team leaders and managers to hire people that aren't as good to not reign on their own ego. Business misses out then..

Apparently the opposite is happening at Microsoft right now where they are starting to get staff retention problems.

You look at how many people succeed in an area that they enjoy...relating that to business is a fantastic idea.
BusinessExpertLouise 3 years ago
Great advice, I liked the way he related the idea to if you enjoy something you will generally be better at it.
