Billy Claiborne tried to kill Buckskin Frank Leslie because the Ringo crowd was sure that Leslie killed Ringo. Leslie survived it. Leslie was married to my Great great Aunt Mary Durwood who lived in Tombstone as Mary Killeen, then Mary Leslie (Ben Traywick calls her wrongly May Killeen). She died in Turlock, Ca in the 1940's. Also, I doubt that the small cottonwood tree was there at Ringo's grave 130 years ago. I've written a few articles about Tombstone, drove a stagecoach and tended bar there.
Back in those days...if you wanted to get rid of somebody it was much easier, not saying I would do it, but somebody killed Johnny Ringo...I find it hard to believe he killed himself!
The pistols in those days were black powder.Ringo could not have held the pistol far enough away from his head to prevent powder burns on his head. There were no powder burns on his skin.
Ringo's rifle was propped against the tree with an unfired round in the chamber. His revolver was found in his hand, containing 5 live rounds and an empty chamber under the hammer. Johnny Ringo did not commit suicide. Johnny-Behind-the-Deuce, a gambler with a hatred and grudge against Ringo for trying to lynch him is the most likely suspect. Outlaw Pony Deal killed JBtheDeuce a short time later in revenge. Billy Claiborn claimed Frank Leslie killed Ringo with his dying breath. this per Ray Hogan
The coroner's report stopped this controversy before it started and made it pretty clear that Ringo committed suicide, but it's hard to kill a modern legend.

It is possible Ringo killed himself. He was found against a tree with a bullet in his head and a gun in his hand. However, noone saw it happen, and there was no such thing as forensics in those days.
He might have killed himself. Or maybe someone killed him. All this happened in a period were time-keeping was inaccurate, and there are many contradicting stories and witnesses. The Earp-clan and their supporters tell one story, the Clantons another.

@tommil1000 The 'Clanton Family' of the 1880s were kind of like 'The Godfathers' of the period but there were other "organized crime families, and bosses" such as Curley Bill and Ringo. Except those then were bad guys, get over it and enjoy our "western freedoms"!

The funny thing about ringos suicide is that all of the chambers were found to have loaded rounds in them, thus casting doubt into the whole suicide theory. their is no positive proof that earp of holliday were in colorado this was an alledge alibi cooked up by good friend and sheriff of trinidad -bat masterson. So it is quite possible that they killed ringo

Johnny Ringo was found dead under a tree in West Turkey Creek Valley just like in the movie Tombstone. One round had been fired from his gun. Was is suicide, a drunken accident ,gunfight, murder? It was officially ruled a suicide but nobody knows for sure except Johnny Ringo and he ain't talking.

Johnie Ringo was riding in a buggy-whip parade through Dealy plaza at the time of his death. Stereoscopes from the time period clearly show a smoke patch emanating from a nearby grassy knoll, while the remaining images from the incident (the famous Zapata slide show) show his head jerking back, and to the left...back and to the left......back....and to the left.
@cometblazt lol! i think that was Ringo Starr, not Johnny Ringo. Johnny Ringo was an outlaw during the time of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. I suppose u were joking tho and if so, it was a good 1 :D lol
Jimblo Wingo was used to drinking whiskey. He one day got a hankering for some milk. Well, the fastest gun who ever lived just up and drank him two glasses of milk. Well, it killed him right off.
In the book titled "I married Wyatt Earp" by Josie Marcus she claims that both Wyatt and Doc slipped back into Arizona and hunted down Ringo. The reason he was found with no "Powder Burns" on his face can be explained by Josie's claim that Wyatt shot him from a distance with a rifle shot to the head. He supposedly was found propped up against a tree with his bare feet wrapped in his torn shirt and his holster strapped on upside down. Who knows the truth? Her explanation sounds logical right?
Actually Ringo's body had decayed quite a bit by the time he was found. The powder burns stuff is just bunk. They did even look for things like that back then and since his body had laid out for quite sometime....even if you were looking for powder burns...you wouldn't be able to tell.

Sir, you should really write a book. Sometimes the hard truth is tougher to take than sweet romantic lies. Don`t hold it against me:) but I knew a member of the Holliday family. But he was reluctant to talk about Doc. I think it was because he himself was a minister, and ashamed of the shootist`s reputation.
Could it have been Luke Short or One-eye Jack? I have heard that this humble, soft-spoken but deadly shootist may have. Or perhaps Doc Holliday`s black friend, One-eyed Jack. Doc saved Wyatt Earp`s life from Jack in a dispute in Kansas, later chillingly informing Wyatt that Jack was faster than he HIMSELF. Wyatt , Doc and Jack had all become friends by 1880, and Jack was reported to had been in Arizona. Or could it had been John Savage, the man REALLY tamed TOMBSTONE?
The guy is absolutely right. Ringo committed suicide. He was a depressive with a drinking problem. Both DH and Wyatt Earp feared/respected Ringo, and both were on the run and well out of AZ when Ringo was shot--by his own hand. BTW, there's nothing like walking down the streets of Tombstone on a cool autumn evening after dark.....
how does this guy think he knows all about the west and the death of the gunfighters< i don't think anyone really knows the whole truth, to know that you would have to have been there. just my opinion...
Kudos to you for telling the truth about Tombstone! I did however thoroughly enjoy the Hollywood Version. But always keeping in mind THEY are in the ENTERTAINMENT BIZ. You however KNOW the REAL STORY and it is well appreciated! Thankyou!
a lonely bullet to the right side of his temple is what it says on his TOmbstone. Everybody from Wyatt(who some say was ambushed with Doc and Frank Dodge), Doc Holiday(by himself using his court appearance as an alibi) to Frank Leslie (who some said shot him while Ringo was asleep under the tree) and ultimately SUICIDE.(which I think is the truth.)
i didn't read anything about gun shot wounds conected with ringos death just that he was found near that tree.being the nut job he was reported to be he might have died of a brain toomer.not as romantic i guess but more realistic .
From what I've read in multiple places, nobody really knows how Johnny Ringo died. I read 3 theories. That he committed suicide, that he was ambushed (possibly by Wyatt Earp or he and Doc Holliday), or killed by someone else. One source said that there was an empty chamber in his gun when found and the other one said that all the chambers were full. I think Hollywood sometimes dramatizes because these are not documentaries, they are movies. Doc Holliday killing Ringo was entertaining.
Ok if he commited sucicide why was he wearing his boots on the opposite feet? When his body was found ? There is other clues that point he didnt kill himself and I know Ringo was part of your Clanton boys boys but come on why is everyone in Tombstone current time so anti Doc and the Earps?
His body had apparently been there overnight since the previous day (when a shot had been heard from the general area by a country resident), and his boots were found tied to the saddle of his horse, which was captured two miles away.
I have a question? The cowboys may have been liked, but they were a gang. They did swear some oath I heard. It still makes sense that someone had to do something if they did commit any crimes. Big or small.
Truth or tombstone? It is near impossible to tell what really happened in Tombstone. So many people told so many different stories. But there is no more evidence Ringo killed himself then there is that Doc Holiday shot him. Truth is no one knows who shot him. Maybe they should have had a guy with a big questionmark on his shirt shoot him in the movie. How vain to think people go to the movies to get an education. They go to movies to be hear a good story. And no one cares about the Clampits.
but johnny ringo and doc did not have any love for each other, and if not stopped they probably would have shot each in an earlier altercation were they were arrested.
you are right... both Doc and his attorney appeared in court there on July 11, 14, and 18, 1882, making it impossible for Holliday to have killed Johnny Ringo.
The movie Tombstone may have been off track historically, but on the plus side it did increase interest in the Old West and it was a flat out enjoyable film. It's sad but true that film-makers never allow the facts to get in the way of telling a good story!
#1 If Johnny Ringo committed suicide with his 45 his head would have been pretty badly mangled; weather he had been found immediately or not! #2 why was he propped up against the Oak tree with his guns strapped on upside down? 3- why were his feet bandaged with strips of his shirt?
I say he was killed by someone and there were plenty of people who had reasons to kill him because despite the romanticizing of Johnny Ringo; he was a low-life who needed killing.
OJ killed Ringo right after he lopped off Nicoles head.

a lonely bullet to the right side of his temple is what it says on his TOmbstone.

I wish there was more pictures of Ringo. So far I've only seen one, and from what I've heard that's the only one in existence

wyatt earp killed him...
kweller23 3 years ago
Ok if he commited sucicide why was he wearing his boots on the opposite feet? When his body was found ? There is other clues that point he didnt kill himself and I know Ringo was part of your Clanton boys boys but come on why is everyone in Tombstone current time so anti Doc and the Earps?
NeilCampbellStables 3 years ago 2

And no one cares about the Clampits.
lollipopfop 3 years ago
Why did he commit suicide?
lollipopfop 3 years ago
but johnny ringo and doc did not have any love for each other, and if not stopped they probably would have shot each in an earlier altercation were they were arrested.
anmoah 3 years ago
you are right... both Doc and his attorney appeared in court there on July 11, 14, and 18, 1882, making it impossible for Holliday to have killed Johnny Ringo.

bull shit
that guy was full of life, a real criminal, plus he wanted to kill either mr Wyatt or mr Holliday so i dont buy it...
