  • I downloaded the whole video off of some emulator/ROM site, maybe emuparadise.

  • About 1:00 you can hear someone plays Day of the Tentacle! =) Now thats cool!!!

  • To win the game you must kill me, John Remaro!

  • Remember kids - these guys are founders of modern FPSs which you play today.

  • keen 5 wasn't aliens ate my babysitter? it was the armagedon machine right? or am i wrong?

  • wait for shawn to come in here and BOOM

  • Awesome footage. Thanks!

  • funny thing is the little 2yr old baby stumbling around, watching romero play Aladdin, had more indepth game story talent back then than 99% of game designers today

  • is that like a beta version of doom or something ?

  • John Romero was the heart and soul of the company and without him the just dont turn out magic anymore. Dont get me wrong doom 3 was awesome but not magical like quake and doom were

  • theres no WOW factor in games now

  • @Mikkedev hahah this is the comment i was looking for!

  • At the start they were looking at Aladdin and were thinking, "We're boned".

  • these were exiting times in gaming i wish i was there... the magic

  • @datajari i feel ya man

  • hmm, i wonder what the game that Bobby Prince showing at 05:30 ?

  • I Would love if Carmack could contribute in other genress like RTS, Racing, . .

  • This was gaming history in the making.. just nobody knew it at the time

  • 6 COD players don't know their roots...

  • Read Masters of Doom. It's awesome.

  • The recording seems like a horror movie

  • Awww the 90s....I wonder if they still sell those DOOM t shirts like that Mullet guy is wearing?

  • @nightmuffin937 i got a doom t-shirt on ebay. i don't think they sell them at any retail store; you'll only find them on line

  • 5:19 - Oh how I miss dos prompt!

  • that's...is not 3d!

  • This is how all gaming companies should be.

  • Fuck yes been reading the "masters of doom" book great to find more id stuff.

  • @Hippyjonnycomics best book

  • MEANWHILE AT ID.

  • What's that song playing at 1:18?

  • I FUCKING LOVED ALADDIN FOR THE GENESIS!

  • Good times.

  • Bobby should compose music for doom 4 (and other id games)

  • Ya gotta eat your veg~tables. NOWWWWWWW

  • These guys' history deserves a movie, than fucking Mark Zuckerberg.

  • @SAFORecruitment01

FUCK YES! i just read the book Masters of Doom and i thought that was WAY more compelling than that nerdy little backstabbing twat, Mark. facebook isnt innovative. ID is! these guys dont follow trends, they fucking set them!

  • I could almost cry in the knowledge of times like these will not be again! Wish I were there.

  • 3:54 "You've got to eat your vegetables..." :D

  • I was there

  • Man, it must have been fun to work at id back then... Aren't there any gaming enthusiastic metalheads out there that would like to found a company and revolutionise the world of videogames with me? My programming skills include... a bit of everything, I guess... uhm... okay... I guess the nineties are over... Rats!

  • @NIMRODakaNIMROD Sounds like a plan to me! :)

  • Bobby Prince @ 4:55 - "Have you seen the Pickle Wars demo?"

  • The best time of all times for these guys.

Id's past is full of memorable moments.

    Today do not know.

  • You gotta eaat your vegtaaaaables .

  • @Knapperr

yOU GOTTA EAT UR VEGTEBALS... RIGHT NOW

  • DOPEFISH LIVES! 3:43! But seriously, ID Software are massively underrated! They made the games of my childhood! They are gods in my view

  • quake 3 and quake live(balanced version of quake 3 :P ) are the best multiplayer fps games EVER !

  • Back before EA bought all the creative teams up. I think ID is one of the few remaining companies that still works like this.

  • @GPVlog

I dont think that's true anymore, Id has hundreds of employees now and was bought out by ZeniMax Media a while ago. But even big game company's can be fun to work at, Until your inevitable redundancy of course.

  • @GPVlog and screw EA... this is how it should be done... they can take risks and create innovative technologies

  • - 5 people have missed the button "like".

  • Fuck id software, they haven't made a decent game since the mid-90's. Nice graphics, no fun...

  • @stonebridge999

    Quake 3 Arena 1999, Doom 3 2004, Quake Live 2009, Rage 2011

Right no good games since mid 90s, obviously true. Enjoy all 3 good games that

most other companies have ever made that were good.

  • @BroNodCom

Quake 3 was mediocre, Doom 3 sucked balls (ever hear of a HUD?), and if Rage doesn't come out for 8 more months, how the fuck do you know that it's good? Oh, because you're a fanboy...

  • @stonebridge999

    Q3=best game ever

  • @stonebridge999

quake 3 and return to castle wolfenstein were great games and certainly above mediocre. DooM3 was above mediocre too, just not as great.

  • @stonebridge999 If Q3 is mediocre, I'm a fucking unicorn.

  • @stonebridge999 Oh thats right. I forgot your opinion is the only one we should have.

  • @stonebridge999 oh really cod fan that what call of duty is like all graphics no FUN

  • @warguyflims

I'm not really a Call of Duty fan. Incidentally, you just described every game id makes, great graphics, terrible control scheme and gameplay.

  • @stonebridge999 cod engine...

  • I would pay everything just to work at ID that time!

  • Beautifull times :D

  • Lol i thought this was present day. Lol.. I'm like wow they're really retro playing Aladdin on Sega Megadrive :D

  • Watching this while reading Masters of Doom (around pages 148~152) must be one of those things every gamer and/or game developer/designer should FEEL at least one time in life :_)

  • Just think - a baby born the year Doom came out can legally vote this year.

  • Romero is left handed? 01:16

  • 4 people lost the game

for not killing john romero at the end

  • Lol, so that's what they do. Yeah, and sit, and think, and create the world's most kick-ass games. But what I'd really like to see is "A Visit inside John Carmack's Brain"

  • "THAT's 3D!" Ahh.. good times.

  • @zackhanscom if you try to make fun of the makers of Doom you are definetily not very old and not a very cool person.

  • I spy with my little eye Bobby PRince using a Ensoniq EPS

  • A bunch of bugs.

    Bugs?

    Yeah bugs.

    /; |

  • DooM audio = EPIC This has to be one of the best jobs ever.

  • The Grandfathers of FPS Gaming!

  • 5:01 MAN, how many people can get around DOS like that these days?

  • @atarimon Lots of people. I can because i am a programmer and still use comand line here and there. Most of the programmers do too. :)

  • I love the music, that song that was supposed to go in Keen Dreams is amazing.

  • Swap the guns for a mining pick, add 17 years. Instant hit.

  • that wolfenstein shirt is sick

  • Those are some serious business mullets.

  • Ya know what they say; business in the front, party in the back!

  • @TradeMarkNZ are you the one with the pacifier

  • thx, now i know my office look like shit

  • @ShawnGreenBungie I dig the hair.

  • the amount of storytelling that Bobby Prince puts into this Bluesy Tune, and other melodies is probably more than any game composer nowadays does for the whole soundtrack... (no offense)

  • that laugh at 1:34 sounds nasty, sort of like drunk

  • I NEED tha wolfenstein shirt!

  • "Now THAT'S 3-D!"

  • This is awesome. "Billy...you got to eat your vegetables." lol

  • Fuckin' uncomplete Doom... That's so awesome

  • John Romero and his hair ruled the 90's

  • look at that mullet!!!!!

  • Bobby Prince!! You rule!!

  • I loved the enthusiasm in Bobby Prince here. The face he made in that one song was hilarious.

    Thanks for the share!

  • the imp was firing plasma cannon, this concept must have been made years b4 doom 2

  • @guitarnashelter Yeah 1 year

  • @acdcbyyoungs 2 years

  • @guitarnashelter No it wasn't, the fireball sprite was just a little different. Still the same concept, though.

  • holly fucking shit that is the same music for commander keen 4 , in the glass level lol

  • I'm reading Masters of Doom and this is priceless! Thanks!

  • Romero sounds kinda stupid with his POWs and WOOSHs...

  • @ChocoboAuCitron That's the year 1993 for you!

  • omg the leveldesign was sooo different. But the first map has it's typical soundtrack allready :D

  • 10,000,000 of cod players on xbl are indebted to these folks, and only 10,000 people have seen this video. Pity.

  • @MjoelH AMEN! These guys MADE the First person Shooter Genre! every company out there that has made a FPS owes id Software a nice bj!

  • 10,000? Remove the comma and the last two zeros.

  • @MjoelH Quake players, Doom, Wolfenstein, Left 4 Dead , Counter Strike, Half Life (Source Engine based off of iD Tech), the earlier Medal of Honor games.

iD are geniuses when it comes to creating engines.

I'd actually like to learn how to mod, model and map now that iD Tech 4 is going open source later this year after Rage is released.

  • @MjoelH and to be honest the cod players arent even getting as quality of a game for the time period.

  • @MjoelH I'm glad you know that COD is running on idTech.

  • @MjoelH sadly that's how it is

  • 5:16 Haha, I remember we had to key in all those stupid command lines back in the old days. Man, I'm so glad GUI was invented.

  • You Better Eat Your Vegetables :D LMAO!! :D

  • 01:07 On the left, that wooden corner-shelf thing looks like those black tall techno towers you see in DOOM. You know, those black tall things in E1M1 at the sides, when you look to the left?

  • I don't think id Software could be this casual anymore, what with how advanced their engines are now, but back then, I would have LOVED to work for them. Especially if I could help Romero with Doom. ;)

  • @TheRoboticFerret Agreed. Now its like 10 hours to render one piece of environment cause of how much Tech has advanced.

  • @ShatteredHawk Yeah, I'd hate to edit and render shit now... SOOO detailed, it's crazy.

  • God I am so happy dudes don't have long hair anymore

  • @poopaholictar

    Actually they still do.

  • Dang, I've always wanted to see what Bobby Prince did with the Doom Music. I can't believe he's a lawyer and Vietnam Vet!!!

  • I just want to say thank for uploading this, I'm a huge gamer, but for nostalgic purposes I like seeing how video games progress. People don't appreciate what DOOM and ID software contributed to the modern FPS. Fuck Call Of Duty, all about DOOM.

  • THANKS FOR UPLOADING! ID for life, wanna work there later on... Texas here i come!

  • THAT'S 3D

  • I wouldn't mind trying out that early version of E1M1

  • what game were they working on when you did this?

  • I like the Bobby Prince part. The music playback brings back memories.. Also thought they are a little more serious company than some rooms with furniture like a hobby room, but on the other hands it made them creating not just games, THE games of the mid-90s.

  • These guys are legends! Also when bobby was explaining the eat your vegetables music, that reminded me of Dexter's Laboratory.

  • it's like the 'back in the day' equivalent of today's Valve Corporation, id are still going i know, but Valve are doing all the better zombie shooters nowadays

  • "THAT's.. 3D!" LOL!!!

  • lol, I accidentally paused at 3:14 :D

  • badass! old school ID software.

  • @DarkShadowRage2 and CRT screens as standard argh

  • damn. oldschool :D

  • i dont have my software on here

  • at home, ;)

  • where is john carmack?

  • "id" in Latin means "it"

  • id is a part of human personality.

    Id, Ego, Super Ego.

  • @fsm1982 exactly

  • @fsm1982 id = instinctual drive

  • I dont think any of the id guys, Ever has explained why they pick "id" as a company title.

  • id stands for IDeas from the deep

like doom. the story isfrom the deep he?

and wolfenstein , i think being a soldier in 1943 or so is not the best life you can have thats why

  • @metaldemon52 To be a bit more precise. id is a reference to the id of the brain. id, ego, superego.

  • As German I always thought it's some creative way of saying "idea". Like "id(ea) software" has good ideas for their games.

  • i like the old levels of doom, when they are testing, wondering if there are WADS of the very first testing of doom, but anyways thanks for sharing this video. :)

  • lmao @ bobby prince, i have the doom and doom II soundtrack in my music folder...kind of a quirky guy.

everything but the computers are similar to today, its pretty nuts how quickly this stuff changes.

    i want to make games....

  • 1:10 - 1:25

    lol,the zombies-time of the season!

And this is sweet as hell:I always wanted to see the legendary creators of Doom.

    Adrian,John and Romero rock!

  • amazing place ; amazing historu; amzing ideas ; love th ID software

  • john carmack is my hero his hacker mentallity is what has caused many great achievments in the pc industry, he is a prodigy.

  • "Deep in the Code"

  • Super cool! But yeah, where is John Carmack!?

  • Heads down in code probably!

  • haha wolfenstein shirt 2:25

  • carmack was having downtime he was plugged into the mainframe uploading data

  • Are you saying Carmack is a Borg?

  • yes carmacks brain serves as the data source and main computer

  • Does anyone notice that the Sound Blaster FM OPL2/3 music heard in the DOOM beta is different from the final version? I assume they changed the GENMIDI lump file in the IWAD over time.

  • Oh well, it's you HAHA. I don't think it's OPL at all. He might set up another soundcard than adlib or Soundblaster in the SETUP.EXE

  • can i vista id software too

  • where is john carmack?

  • in his bunker

  • These times it was about gameplay not grapichs(well at some point) and the games around these times did not go after a cinematic look like the moddern games does..

  • Oh my god - im HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of id Softaware. John Carmack is my god! i am Beginner Game Engine Programmer. Please tell me where did you get it? this is priceless! do you have any other videos like that ? i would even buy them off of you !!!!

  • this video was taken from john romeros webbsite

  • I played around with the idea of taking the partition of Bobby Prince to Youtube, but the poster just put it here with almost no credits and stuff. Geez.

  • Same here! John Carmack is also my hero, alongside Ken Silverman and a whole bunch of people.

  • Lol, I guess I don't have to feel embarrassed saying that John Carmack is one of my heros.

  • Carmack yes, Silverman was decent and turned into a loser.

  • i see the first level of beta Doom looked a little different then the official one.

  • coool

  • Bobby Prince the unsung hero

  • omg epic!! remember me good times.
