Thanks so much for these videos! It was a long watch but worth it. The only thing I was confused about was why you only have to put flux on part of the silver. Does the rest not get hot enough?
suzi80 Thanks so much for the question, you can flux the entire piece, by doing so would help stop the copper rising to the surface of the sterling, but then your solder could flow everywhere too not just in the joint. You could use boric acid to coat the thing but that is problematic in other ways, you can use heat sinks to keep your piece from getting to hot. part 1 of 2
@suzi80 My son is a teenager and loves to play aerial dog fight games on line, he has gotten good at it, well I was teaching him how to solder silver and he gave me this analogy of soldering (soldering is like flying a jet fight in combat the winner is the one that can best apply and bleed away energy, or soldering is applying or bleeding away heat). part 2 of 2
thank you for these videos! I'm an absolute beginner(and a very clumsy one at that)and your videos are just fantastic. I need to have things explained clearly and you do that in a very easy to understand way.
Thank you sooo muuuch for sharing this video. I too am new at this. I recently took a class on this and didn't get nearly as much information as I did from you. Most jeweler are not willing to share any information. So with much Aloha, Thank you for everything. I would love to stay in contact with you and will look forward to many more instructions you may have. God Bless.
Sure, e-mail me if you have a question and Ill try to help, so glad you liked the vids, when you get to a level that makes you comfortable at this craft you should thing about do a jewelry video too, would love to see what you got, keep in touch and later.
A Fantastic series, I enjoyed watching and learning your techniques in working with silver. I'm a beginner in creating with silver, starting out with silver wire wrapping, beading, and precious metal clay (PMC). I've been leaning more and more towards trying my hand at silver soldering and your videos have given me inspiration and confidence in trying so.
I do have a question. Is the process using the handyflux applied the same with when using silver wire solder? Again, awesome tutorial! Ciao
Yes, as far as the way I do it. Flux first, dry the flux, melt the flux and solder at the correct heat. Do some copper first it will be cheep good practice.
Hello i really enjoyed this tutorial it was a simple breakdown i am getting into metal work now and i find your videos inspiring i would love to contact you if i have any additional questions peace n love!!
rickat4ever I dont mind helping out, e-mail me if you want with any questions, and I'll try to answer them or we can talk on the phone. But may I make a suggestion; think long and hard about the scheme of it all first. The only thing more important then the foundation is the plans, even if there just scribbled on a napkin.
Great Videos !! Excellent bro, very easy to follow and great job of the rings, Im a beginner made a couple of silver and gold rings before after one lesson at community club and they didnt come out too bad, would be good to try make one of theese.
Hell yes, you should go for it, it sounds like you got a knack for this king of stuff, be sure you work on your design and sequence of steps in building the ring, I always build it in my head first, then with my hands.
Thanks West 143, say do you still live Hermosa Beach, I was there for one day, back about 20 years ago and then by pals drug me all the way to Dana point that night, and I never made it back. I remember it as a nice beach.
Hay jewelsandthings I do still use a good quality Red Rouges from time to time, but man if you don't clean it right away in an ultra sonic cleaner you'll be cleaning out the red dust for the next season. Later.
nice 1, not seen toothpaste or fabulustre used. I use lustre tripoli and rougue (im going to try and switch over and see what happens.. then to clean it liquid soap and a anti tarnish cloth.
jamiespost and BlarneyStone1, thanks a bunch, it means a lot to here that kind if feed back. Youll are very kind indeed.
