i went ahead and looked it up, because derrick was not in rkl for a few years before he died. the last big rkl tour with derrick was 2002. Rkl had a different drummer in their last shows in 04. The last music thing he was involved in was something called JAWS and I dont believe they played live in belgium Im not sure they did play live.
if you saw derrick in 2005, i believe he killed himself in feb. He had a broken hip and was using a wheel chair. So thats not the year.... I think in 2004 he did shows with rkl. That would be the band.
someone asked how tall he was. He was shorter than average. About 5 6 I would say. Joey cape is about 5 6 too chris flippins i think is 6 7 shawn dewey is like 6 4
I got emotional listening to all of Hoss last night. Derrick is definitely someone who deserved much better than he got, and should still be around making beautiful music.
i have a question, im pretty sure i've seen him play in the periode of 2003-2005 on a belgian festival, not sure tho, but i cant seem to find wich band it could have been
i saw lagwagon and the ataris in 2003 but he left those way earlier (unless he stepped in as subsitute on a tour) i saw mad caddies in 2003or 04 but cant find any data on when he played for them, quite sure i never saw rkl or bad astronaut tho, can anyone help me with this?
queria que bajes a peru y hagas una tocada con todo lagwagon, para verlos en vivo, pero bueno, tu amigo joeycape bajara a peru mañana. Solo espero que estees donde estees sigas rompiendo esa teba como siempre lo hiciste.
Lagwagon has been one of my favorite bands since 2000. I recently started to get into RKL too, but never knew the history of the bands. Heartbreaking. The drum beat is what gets me into most songs, and to find out he's dead is a bummer. Having also mental health issues and playing drums, the guy is a real inspiration. RIP.
I never got to see him live, but my friend saw Lagwagon in Colorado around the late 90's time. she was on the side of the stage and said derrick was drumming with his shoes off, and she couldn't believe how fast and perfect he was playing. she stood there the whole show watching him in a trance.
I first heard lagwagon on the "can of pork" comp from look out records, he became one of my favorite drummers instantly, he was probably the first very technical melodic punk drummer i heard,I have to agree with xkatharosx the music is not the same. you have to actually listen to the old bands to hear that music now a days. I got to see lagwagon with derrick twice in austin tx. after derrick lagwagon didn't sound the same, one more comment, did you know that he was the ataris first drummer.
DIDNT KNOW THIS.... because im not anymore in lagwagon....but he influenced me a lot as a drummer , i still love the thrashed and the duh album. great drumming.... and i miss this days in the 90s... sorry butt melodic punk and hardcore isnt the same anymore.... but thats not theme now.
Rest in Peace... My first drum book still writes "best drummer, derrick from lagwagon". Put it on it when i went to school 15 years ago.
Nicest guy you'd ever meet. When I was living a few blocks off State St in SB, he was going out with the chick that lived next door to me. Never failed to make me laugh. He had these fucking hilarious shirts he came up with himself; and as I recall, one had Jesus on it.
Derrick kind of looks like Carson Daly.

punk rock beats tend to be repetitive and one dimentional, but derrick crushed everything I thought I kew about punk rock drumming.
