Animals are not inherently evil, it wasn't out to get you... I'm sure the people running the park (the ones who leashed him to a tree) had been mentally abusive to him or visitors to the park harassing the poor thing and he was lashing out at humans in general... There are a number of reasons that happened.

Bottom line is, he felt threatened. Ya know, it might have been because the two of you were on separate sides of him... maybe he just felt cornered...
